Wishful thinking, I know... But, yeah, in total agreement... the cellar dwellers in the lower realms of a 14-team league are literally spots that no one *wants* to fill (particularly on a regular basis). HF_ Posted March 13, 2017 Report Posted March 13, 2017 Thank you for posting, Dead Dog Alley. This huge "upgrade in talent" that is going on at Nebraska is only on paper, in terms of more shiny stars. My eyeballs tell me, stars don't matter and we are in the bottom 2-3 teams in talent in this conference. Case in point - across the board, a lot of Big Ten teams have groups of freshman that are outperforming not only our own group of freshman, but also our sophomores. My expectation is that we consistently compete for a top-half finish in the conference and make it to the NCAA every 2 or 3 years and start winning occasionally when we make it. This is not going to happen when we are a bottom 2-3 team in talent. Quote

This is not going to happen when we are a bottom 2-3 team in talent. While I am not 100 percent sold on stars either... there is a reason that these guys have those stars. Having talent is one thing. I believe that we have a lot of talent on our team honestly. Now reaching and achieving that talent consistently on a nightly basis is another thing. I think herein lies the problem. I do not think you need to look any further than wins against Purdue, Maryland, Dayton, Indiana, an OT loss to Wisconsin, and strong spurts against KU and UCLA to see that we have talent on the roster. That's just my 2 cents. Quote

HF_ Posted March 13, 2017 Report Posted March 13, 2017 Talking nothing about rankings in terms to comparing freshman. PSU has 3 freshman who were extremely productive, more so than all of our sophomores. We had zero freshman who were productive, outside of 2-3 glimpses of hope all year. I think we are falling behind, not catching up or passing these teams in our similar lower tier predicament. Chuck Taylor 1 Quote

Their roster ranks 337th in experience, ours is 289th. Not a terribly significant difference despite them having more Fresmen and us having more Sophs, PSU also didn't have a Tai Webster going for 17 PPG, they also didn't play as deep a rotation as we did. Ed Morrow missed a significant portion of the year with a foot injury, and never returned to previous form. In the end they only averaged 72 PPG to our 70. I still fail to see a whole lot of difference between the two teams. Silverbacked1 1 Quote

HF_ Posted March 13, 2017 Report Posted March 13, 2017 One has 3 first year players who were major contributors. One has 3 first year players who were essentially non-factors outside of a few games or plays all year. I don't mean to veer off topic, but Dimes posted that Watkins was a redshirt freshman. I can't for the life of me remember a time when we we had the depth/luxury to redshirt a somewhat promising guy who just needed to mature a bit. Anybody remember the last time we had a productive/successful career from a guy who redshirted as a freshman? Quote

Our sophomores' numbers were against one of the nation's toughest schedules. Playing non conference games against Dayton, UCLA, Virginia Tech, Kansas, and Creighton probably are going to have some effect on numbers. Our team has talent. Most of the Big 10 teams have talent, also. You are forgetting Copeland, who will be a Junior, if he gets his medical hardship. He avg. 11.1 PPG, 5.4 RPG, 2.0 APG, 1.6 TOPG, shot 42.9% from the floor, 77.2 % from the free throw line as a sophomore for Georgetown. Quote
HF_ Posted March 13, 2017 Report Posted March 13, 2017 Ahh Diaz. There you go. That one paid off, at least for a couple years. Outside of that, pretty rough group. It seems like we have had guys like Ubel, Wilkinson and Tai in recent history, who got to their senior year and you were like "damn...I wish we could've redshirted him instead of burning their freshman year because we had no other options other than to play them." Redshirting a walk-on isn't terribly meaningful. And Smith and Balham were Collier recruits. I don't remember Bear Jones redshirting; Diaz only did so because admissions said he wasn't eligible for enrolment until he passed a language test, which delayed him for a semester, at which point Doc decided to have him sit the rest of the year. I think Brandon, Alonzo and Toney were a redshirt experiment that Doc decided didn't work out so well. And Ray Gallegos should have been on the list under Sadler. HuskerFever 1 Quote
