    Dead Dog Alley

The idea, from what I remember, stemmed from Johnny Orr allegedly saying that the Devaney Center crowd was a bunch of "dead dogs". For some reason, Danny Nee and crew thought this would be an excellent marketing opportunity. I'm not sure why embracing an insult from an opposing coach would be a successful marketing strategy; I never really understood the logic of it. But, as Danny described it (with some paraphrasing) "I want our crowd to be crazy, be wild like a bunch of dogs." So, every student that bought season tickets got a Dead Dog Alley t-shirt. Nebraska went 10-18 that year.

Just wanted to say that whatever over-the-top hype Raiola is receiving, it might not be enough. The throws he's making and the command of the offense for someone who's played 5 games is off the charts. I think I saw he's drawn 12 or 13 defensive pass interference penalties mostly on those underthrown back-shoulder throws this year. That's just silly accuracy. And no picks that were his fault. His passes nearly always end up only in a spot where his guy can get it or no one gets it. Just amazing. And John Bullock deserves to be an all-Big 10 player. He won't get it unless we win a bunch more games, but he is playing at an incredibly high level.

The number of times he's dropped a ball into a very tight space where only the receiver can catch it is amazing. Sure, we've seen better at some of the top programs. But we haven't seen anything like this in decades. Embrace it while we have it.

  14. Tom Shatel says it was Norm Stewart: https://huskerextra.com/news/basketball/mens-basketball/shatel-nebraska-fans-made-pba-one-of-the-best-home-court-advantages-in-college-basketball/article_2564a2fe-da78-11ee-8222-9791232dba3a.html Way back when, Missouri coach Norm Stewart called Nebraska fans a bunch of “Dead Dogs” after a game. NU coach Danny Nee turned it into a slogan and “Dead Dog Alley” became a T-shirt. Given Tom Shatel's level of accuracy I stand by my assertion that it was Johnny Orr.

    Dead Dog Alley

I thought it was Norm Stewart that was the one that coined the dead dogs term. But I also may be misremembering. Either way, it was a weird idea to try and use it to motivate the students or use it as a nickname for the student section at Devaney. There's a pretty good reason why this promo lasted only one year. I got one of those shirts, I think I may actually still have it somewhere. Back in those days the Big 8 had probably the best collection of hoops coaches in the country: Norm Stewart Billy Tubbs Johnny Orr Danny Nee Eddie Sutton - it's remarkable that Eddie Sutton's predecessor was Leonard Hamilton Lon Kruger/Dana Altman Roy Williams and then, there was Colorado. So 7 out of 8.

  20. I completely agree. I wanted to say it's more detrimental in bball than football (which I still believe), but man, losing a QB is tough.

  21. 100% it wil happen, and probably will be increasingly problematic. This was always going to be a byproduct of this wild west of unregulated pay for play. It will get worse before the market sorts itself out too I think. There will be a lot of money wasted on trying to convince kids to play for certain schools just to have those kids sketch out like Sluka or for them to not pan out. I guess it doesn't bother me all that much. If rich dudes think it's a good idea to piss all their money away on 18-22 year old boys then who am I to judge?
