You have your right to your opinion. Others have the right to theirs.
By the way, I did not grow up in the metro areas, and I know a load of people both in Northeast and Central Nebraska. Many do not share your opinion that he is a favorite son, and many are still upset with his decision to turn his back on Nebraska.
Again, I am not dissing the dude. In fact, I respect his accomplishments. I simply was miffed that he appeared to get special access to the field, and "I" thought that was a bone-headed decision by someone in the athletic department, since he turned his back on the University. He absolutely has the right to make decisions that he feels are in his best interests. But when he chooses a rival institution, he becomes irrelevant to our institution.
