The Skinny
Welcome to year 3 of the Tim Miles era. We all had the feeling he was going to be different but did anyone expect it to happen this quickly? The Huskers enter the season ranked for the first time 1995 and only their second appearance in the AP preseason poll. Back are all of last year's major players minus Ray Gallegos to graduation. Instead of spending the pre-conference forming an identity, expect Miles' squad to focus on refining their offense to go along with that defense that had them dancing last year.
The Huskers open up the first of two paycheck games with a Northern Kentucky squad that was held to 31 points on Friday by Wisconsin. Expect a slower ugly game where the undersized Norse mostly take 3s on defense while attempting to pack the lane against the Huskers. Nebraska is going to win this game but hopefully we'll see this veteran squad take care of business in the first half.
Things to watch for
- Can the crowd get the Husker Power chant going at the first game?
- Has Jake Hammond made it into the game? He probably isn't going to redshirt but his clock doesn't start until he checks into a game.
- How will Moses, T-Smith, Fuller and Hammond fit into the rotation?
- Is post-hype Tai Webster as real as he seems?
- Can Benny and Rivers continue to provide offense?
- How does the team respond for an opener against an inferior opponent? How about the crowd?
- Is Pitchford really going to hang in the lane on offense this year?
- Will Shavon turn it up another notch?
- Can Petteway consistently hit a 3?
Prediction: Nebraska 75 - 52 with a 97% chance of Runzas
