Four freshmen who played more than 10 minutes had pretty good lines last night:

Hammond--6 points on 3 of 5 from the floor, 7 rebounds (3 off., 4 def.), 1 foul and no turnovers in 16 minutes

Watson--6 points on 2 of 4 from the floor, hitting his only three and his only free throw, 1 rebound, 3 assists, 2 steals and no turnovers in 20 minutes

Jacobson--6 points on 1 of 2 from the floor and 4 of 4 from the line, 8 rebounds (2 off., 6 def.) and 2 turnovers in 14 minutes

Morrow--4 points on 1 of 3 from the field and 2 of 4 from the line, 5 rebounds, 1 assist (a thing of beauty), 2 turnovers and 3 blocks in 15 minutes.

McVeigh had a tough go at shooting last night--presumably/hopefully, that's merely an intermittent setback in an otherwise upward trajectory.

Each of these freshmen is progressing in his own way and at his own rate--and intermittently at times. But it's obvious over the early season games that progress for each is both fast and real--and fun to watch.

APB was a pretty good defensive team.  They played the 2-3 all night I think.  That was a good test for us.  We saw some nice things from Bakari last night.  Looks like he's gaining some confidence.  Great interior defense by Morrow and Hammond, and I thought we made good interior passing too.

Box Score

I can't figure out why Andrew White sits as much as he does.  Seems like he gets pulled a lot.  When you have Benny Parker and Tai Webster playing more minutes than White, that is not a good thing.  Even Shields has played 20 more minutes than White.  I hope when the competition gets better than White is on the floor the majority of the game.  He is our best scoring threat.

What I don't get is why our leading offensive rebounder (by a longshot) is only getting 14 minutes/game.

Hammond is our starting center but only 8th on the team in minutes played.  He's far and away our leading offensive rebounder (per 40 minutes), he's shooting a decent percentage, he's not a turnover machine, and he hasn't been in foul trouble.

If he'd been having foul problems, I could maybe get it.  Possibly it's not setting legit screens?

I was glad to see us work a little harder to get the ball down inside to him last night.  And he responded by converting attempts into baskets.  Good for Jake.

I thought last night Jake played his best game to date.  He was much more active.  Cincinnati, and their physical nature, will be a great test for him.  Nebraska Nation prays that he passes that test.

I noted an observation that Andrew White was our best scorer.  I tend to disagree a bit.  I believe Andrew is our best shooter, but Shavon is our best scorer.  If Andrew can prove that he can consistently put the ball on the floor and take it strong to the hoop, then I will put that crown on Andrew.  Perhaps that crown will shift as we meander through this year, but to date, it is Shavon's crown. (But Andrew is getting close)

Not to take anything away from Shields but White is shooting a better percentage from the field, 3 pointers, and free throws.  He has played 20 less minutes than Shields this season but still scoring more points.  Not sure how you can think Shields is a better scoring option than White.

The Dean Oliver based offensive rating metric does back up that sentiment

Who should Jake be getting more minutes over?

2-19 3 point shooting at home is BRUTAL.  I was hoping we were no longer capable of that.

Guys just weren't feeling the three last night. It was weird. Glynn hit one and White hit one (of six), but every other attempt was off. I really believe this was an anomaly and that we'll be okay. It was just an overall poor offensive showing for the entire team, despite the generally solid defense.

I think HB is just mad about that free custard he didn't get last night ;)

No doubt we're a better shooting team but we're still plenty capable of stinking up the joint from 3.

Well, the other night, for example, all of our bigs were getting in foul trouble to the point that Miles sends in Borchardt to end the half.  But Jake wasn't in foul trouble at the time.  (Or maybe he was and I just didn't recall.)  I guess I wouldn't be playing Jacobson as many minutes.  Granted he's only at 12.4 as it is, but Hammond is only at 13.8 and he starts.  And I'd probably take some of Fuller's minutes.

If we doubled Jake's minutes from 13 to 26 (normal range for a starter) and if you assumed that his stats would increase proportionately, he'd be kicking in about 10 boards and 8 points per night.  That ain't bad.  Especially on a team that doesn't really need him to score.

I am interested in how the "bigs" defend in addition to the rebounding and scoring (both of which is important).  Jake seems to defend well in spurts.  I believe if he had 30 or 40 more pounds of muscle on his frame, he will/could become a more consistent defender.  Perhaps that is why he is losing minutes...

They've played a lot of basketball in the last week or so and with this tourney, how many minutes do you want them to play?!

I fee like getting to the basket against top notch competition is going to be tough for this team. I think White is really good, but he isn't Terran (in many good ways) in the ability to get to the rack.

I hope they continue to try and get ball on the block as that will open shooters as the year progresses
