Huskerpapa Posted September 29, 2015 Report Posted September 29, 2015 It is the practice of throwing the ball to each other within the infield after recording an out, provided that there are no runners on base. It is a baseball "tradition", but also serves to keep the infielders' throwing arms active. By the way, it is also sometimes used to describe a 5-4-3 double play... Quote
49r Posted September 29, 2015 Report Posted September 29, 2015 Fun Horne fact of the day: Does anyone know what a "horn" is in major league baseball? Hint: same thing as a titanium sombrero. "Titanium Sombrero" sounds like something really, REALLY dirty. Quote
49r Posted September 29, 2015 Report Posted September 29, 2015 Pretty significant difference in Horne's offer list compared to Draymond, tho... https://rivals.yahoo.com/tcu/basketball/recruiting/player-Jeriah-Horne-166799 First, make sure you click on the full offer list. Second, Rivals doesn't list Memphis, which also offered. Beating out P5 schools including West Virginia, KSU and Minnesota, not to mention Memphis and Wichita State ... that's pretty good company, right there. Yeah, but Day Day had offers from Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan and Ohio State...kind of in a different stratus, don't you think? Quote
jimmykc Posted September 29, 2015 Report Posted September 29, 2015 Wrong. You are thinking of throwing the old stitched apricot "around the horn" which is not the same at all. Getting a "horn" is striking out six times in the same game; in other words getting a golden sombrero twice in the same game. This is a very rare occurrence , indeed, and was initially done by Sam Horn. a legendary Red Sox first baseman and inspiiration for the popular blog SOSH. Quote
jimmykc Posted September 29, 2015 Report Posted September 29, 2015 didn't intend to highjack this important thread, so returning to the subject now, I did check out the Barstow school. I was curious since I grew up near KC and once lived on State Line, the street near where the school was once located. I'm not sure what kind of competition his high school plays against, but it does not appear to be too impressive. Pembroke Country Day school used to be a power for rich kids during the sisties, but has not been so for decades. Some of the other teams were ones we played against as a very poor class "A" team in Kansas. Perhaps someone who lives in KC now and is not an antique can address this issue. If Horne, commits we may have pulled a diamond in the rough from under the noses of the big guys. Quote
kldm64 Posted September 29, 2015 Report Posted September 29, 2015 For what it's worth ... 247 Sports Crystal Ball is predicting 100% probability Jeriah Horne commits to the Huskers. http://247sports.com/Player/Jeriah-Horne-82239 It's no guarantee, but I like those odds. This is based on only 1 person's prediction at the moment. Either way, I hope they are right as I'd take this kid. Silverbacked1 1 Quote

This is true...but that one person is Corey Evans who usually has pretty rock solid information. He may have some inside information, he may not. But I think it's a good sign. Hopefully Horne pulls the trigger soon. Silverbacked1 1 Quote

Going "Around the Horn" originated as a sailing term meaning traveling from the Atlantic to the Pacific around the southern extreme of South America. The "Horn" of Africa is, basically, Ethiopia and Somalia. Quote

49r Posted September 29, 2015 Report Posted September 29, 2015 BTW, the southern tip of Africa is commonly, albeit wrongly, known to be the Cape of Good Hope. Quote

Haven't had my coffee yet on "national coffee day"! It would be the 'eastern' tip of the continent of Africa, if the coffee has measurably kicked in (that is). Yes, the sailing quotient is for South America's southern travels to go around the 'horn,' but that wasn't what I was referring to in my horn discussions. Speaking of 'Horns, did you see that Texas has officially gone off the rail in special teams?! Karma is the Longhorns new best friend! Quote

49r Posted September 29, 2015 Report Posted September 29, 2015 Fair enough, Norm. By the way, what's your stance on sailing terms vis-a-vis continental circumnavigation, paying particular attention to the continents of South America and Africa? AuroranHusker and Silverbacked1 2 Quote

jimmykc Posted September 29, 2015 Report Posted September 29, 2015 Hey, if you are only looking for page fillers I am always up for that. Now that we are speaking of sailing and Africa, I am reminded of Captain Horatio Hornblower. Jimmy Carter once mistakenly introduced Hubert Humphrey by that name. And we all knew that Hubert was born in Doland, South Dakota, don't cha know? And we all know who else was born there., don't cha know? And how about that for a long, slow curve over the plate, to get back to the baseball metaphor. AuroranHusker 1 Quote

colhusker Posted September 29, 2015 Report Posted September 29, 2015 Why I applaud the effort here guys, would it not make more sense given we are trying to get a thread to 20 pages about a kid named Horne to discuss the brass section in the pep band? Jimmy as far as the horn in baseball, why is the 1st baseman no longer included when teams through the ball around the horn? He was when I was growing up. Quote

49r Posted September 29, 2015 Report Posted September 29, 2015 Apparently, Cape Horn was given its name by the Dutch explorer Williem Corneliszoon Schouten who first made the trip around it in 1616. He named it after his home town of Hoorn. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hoorn Quote

I'm sure the french horn will make an appearance before too long, unless a commit occurs first. Then all bets are off... And, I recall that the 1B was a part of the 'around the horn,' but now it seems that players only include the 1B on the initial throw from the bag. Wear & tear got to be too much for these newfangled players, huh? Silverbacked1 1 Quote
