Is it just me, or do males in Nebraska seem to be genetically challenged when it comes to being born with NBA caliber talent?  After seeing Ohio State take liberties by adopting LeBron James as a Buckeye, just because he was born in Ohio, I got to wondering about something.

How many native Nebraskans have played in the NBA, and who is the last one to do so?

Without taking time to think much or research:  Erick Strickland, Dave Hoppen, Mike McGee, Rich King (cup of coffee), Ron Boone, Bob Boozer, Bart Kofoed, Cedrick Hunter (got a couple of 10 day contracts I believe).  Anyone since Strick?

My bad, Wayne.  I wasn't processing native Nebraskan as being born here, just those who played high school ball here.  We may have some others who were born here but moved on.  Piatkowski spend a bunch of tiem in Scottsbluff (through 8th grade) but don't know where was born.

In other sports, Andy Roddick and Mark Calcevechhia have to rank up there as nebraska-born athletes who were great pro athletes.

I believe Hoiberg was born in Lincoln and his family moved to Iowa right afterwards. Hoiberg grew up in Iowa. His mom's dad was Jerry Bush, I think most know that, but Hoiberg's parents graduated from Lincoln Southeast, his mom was actually the track coach? there for a very short time until Fred was born and they headed for Iowa.

you realize how hard it is to make the nba? only 15 players per team, and 25% of the league is foreign players.

Wow!  Good call on Stivrins.  Forgot about him.  Didn't know that about Walters.  He must not have lived here long, as he went to high school in California.  Would Stivrins be the most recent born and raised Nebraskan (except for college) to play in the NBA?  If so, there hasn't been another in over 20 years.

Stivrins graduated from Lincoln East in 1980, and his final season at CU (the one out west) was 1984-85, so his NBA career pre-dates Strickland's.

Furthermore, I still can't believe that a classmate of mine chose to attend Creighton, and then transfer to Colorado. He's a doctor now, so he's not stupid. It just may appear that way. (Sorry, Alex.)

Well, his family has seen the light--his daughter has committed to play volleyball at....NEBRASKA!

Rex Walters was born in Omaha and played a number of NBA years.  Tom Kropp played a few years in the NBA as well, he was a GI native.   And lest we forget, Lincoln had a NBA player by the name of Alex Stivrens,

Wasn't Eric Piatkowski of school age in Scottsbluff, NE?

Good on her. His 6-11 son is a junior backup center at Nevada.

He lived for a period of time in Scottsbluff, but I believe he may have been born in Denver or perhaps Columbus OH???

Having seen Andre Woolridge play in high school, had you asked me then I would have said there was no chance he wouldn't play in the NBA.

But alas...

So, did you know the guy from the Diet Coke Break commercials?  I knew his cousin from my Army days.

By the way, Stivrins chose the two worst CUs EVAH!
