Do we really think that Shawn hired this guy and said, oh by the way you have to hire the instates rival oc or you don't get the job. And he will be the head coach when we kick you to the curb in a year or two? really?

I'm giving you a lot of sh!t right now, 13, because of your stance on the coaching FIRE, and getting what you want on the FIRE end puts you at risk on the HIRE end, so I'm having a little fun with that right now.  (Of course, I know you can take it.)  But, in all seriousness, in defense of the hire, people have been saying he was doing a lot with very little resources at Oregon State.  And I'm curious how Oregon State's resources compare with Kansas State's.  Or Boise State's.  Or TCU's or Baylor's facilities.

Good coaches tend to success in spite of things like lack of facilities.  Those things help, of course.  But if a guy has "it" he'll move his program forward, making it increasingly competitive over time.

Hey, it might work out, but I admit I'm worried.

And, as to Frost, that doesn't make sense.  Why would Frost join Riley when Riley runs a pro-style offense and Frost runs a dual-threat QB-type offense?  Their offensive philosophies seem incompatible to me.

Perhaps he is willing to let Frost do his thing? I'm not sure...but Frost is not a one trick pony.  He played under Walsh's WCO system, played under Osborne's power system, coached in the NFL learning the tampa cover 2, and now coached under Chip Kelly.  Who knows if the Frost crap is true....I really hope it is because I think Frost is going to end up a very good coach.  If he isn't already.

I know I was certainly HOPING we would hire a 61 year old guy with a bad record, no recruiting ties to the Midwest, and who runs a system where there will be another "adjustment" period.  But, at least it wasn't Tressel.  That's me.  Glass half full.

The age thing doesn't bother me.  Also, Im not sure about his recruiting ties to the Midwest but he is known as a very good recruiter in Texas and Cali form what I hear.  Those are two important states for us.  Nebraska's name should sell itself in the Midwest.  The system does worry me....not sure we have a QB on the roster to run what he has in the past.  But then again, I'm not sure we have a QB on the roster that's worth a darn in any system.

Ryker Fyfe couldn't possibly be any worse than Joe Daley or Beau Davis.  Holy heck, Batman.

Sounds like Ed Orgeron may be coming to NU...there is your recruiter.  He would be a huge get.

How does anyone know we won't win.  Biases are built into each person.  They see Coach Riley as not being high profile.  That is insane.  Granted, he may not work out, but then again, this could be an absolute home run hire.  I am willing to give him a chance.  It sounds like others will not.  For the record, I supported Doc, I supported Bo and now...I support Coach Miles and Riley.  It seems to be working with Coach Miles to this point.

Can he recruit and/or coach better than Pelini? How much does his coaching staff, which he has yet to hire, factor into that equation? Does he understand the culture?

Profile? Billy C had profile. At the end of the day profile doesn't butter the bread.

I support the kids and then the staff, the kids need our "help" more than a coaching staff does.

I don't think raising questions about the trajectory of the OSU program in recent years constitutes not giving the guy a chance.  AIl I know is I will give him a chance, and continue to support the program.  I am actually optimistic, at least in the short term.  We have a lot of talent in the system, a very stout front 4 returning, and as long as Riley doesn't pull a Callahan and sacrifice a couple of years to push some square pegs-round holes (and there is no reason to think Riley has Callahan's arrogance in that regard, plus his age should prevent that)  we should do well.  Riley's age may actually help in this regard.

I will be watching the staff selection and early efforts at recruiting, both of which could address some longer term concerns.  GBR.

I guess my opinion counts as much as any other persons...so yes he does coach and recruit better than Bo.  He coached well enough to earn a NFL Head Coaching job, and when he finished there, he was brought back to the school that he came from and had left.  Tie that to the word from others in the profession, provides fuel for my opinion.  Same goes for his recruiting abilities.  Given his budget limitations and location (especially living next door to VERY RICH big brother Oregon, tells me that he has the ability to bring in Power 5 conference talent.  Again, MY opinion.

I agree that the coaching staff is a key.  Personally, I thought Callahan was a good offensive coach, but like Bo, he was not a top flight CEO of the team.  His coaching staff will be of utmost importance.  It was the downfall of our last three football coaches.  They relied too long on staff that did not elevate the talent, or adjust their coaching thought process.  Riley talks the talk regarding bringing in talented assistants.  I am willing to put aside judgement until after I see the finished product.

As far as understanding the culture...he played at Alabama.  If you think for a second that the culture at Alabama under Bear Bryant or Saben takes a back seat to our culture...I am of the opinion that you are very mistaken.  The dude understands the winning or else mentality.

Again, I was one of the few (apparently) that was not wanting to give up on Bo.  I bolieved he was a couple of players (plus player health) away from being an elite team (again my opinion only).  But he is now gone.  I was also a strong supporter of Doc, but he too is now long gone.  There were a lot of people who doubted the most recent basketball hire.  Even though I liked Doc, I supported the change and was willing to give the new coach an opportunity.  In similar fashion, I am willing to give Riley an opportunity; and quite frankly, the more I have researched him, the more I read about him, the more that I hear about him, gives me high hopes for the immediate improvement of this team.

Just now watched the news conference with Coach Riley and AD Eichorst.

Conclusion: I'm highly impressed with both!!

Loved Riley's walkon discussion and his sharing of some walkon experiences.

Loved Eichorst's discussion of how he worked this out.

Quality people here--both of them. Hope it works out well. This selection gives us an excellent chance.

Here is another thought...given the fact that Coach Riley is approaching 62, I do not see him putting the program on any type of meandering path.  He needs and wants to win immediately.  He already has more college talent then he ever has had.  I believe he wants to make a difference next year, and put the program back on top.

In the 70's we were a top 5 program.

In the 80's we were a top 15 program

In the 90's we were again a top 5 program

In the 00's and again in the first half of the 10's we are a top 25 program.

I am hoping we find our self back in the top 5...perhaps as early as next year.  If we win with our schedule next year...we will be there.
