Lincoln – The Big Ten Conference announced the Big Ten opponents for the 2014-15 men’s basketball schedule Friday afternoon.

The new format, which was created for the 14-team league with the addition of Maryland and Rutgers for the 2014-15 season, features a three-year cycle where every team will have at least one home-and-home series with all 13 conference opponents.

Each year, teams will have five home-and-home series along with eight single-play opponents, four at home and four on the road.

Next season, the Huskers will face Illinois, Iowa, Maryland, Minnesota and Wisconsin in home-and-home matchups.  Nebraska’s single-play home matchups include Indiana, Michigan State, Northwestern and Rutgers, while NU will travel to Michigan, Ohio State, Penn State and Purdue.

I don't know much what to think about it. Every team is different from year to year.

Would have been nice to have Rutgers, Northwestern or Penn State for our double plays. But at least we didn't draw Michigan, Michigan State, Ohio State twice.

Really like the round robin of the 8 or 10 team conferences like the old Big 8 & the newest Big 12, respectively... mainly because I want to have certain opponents such as Mich & OSU at the Vault every year to see how NU stacks up against these high-caliber teams year-in & year-out. Oh well, I suppose a 26-game conference schedule probably isn't going to happen! ;)

I perhaps haven't looked at this in great enough detail, but my initial review is that we are not catching any breaks with this schedule.  But then again, with an improved team, this schedule may prove to be very benefical.

Have they announced how they'll run the B1G tourney in 2015? I assume they'll add Wednesday and make the 11 thru 14 seeds play a couple of bunny bracket games.

Or they could just give the 1 and 2 seeds a bye, start Thursday at 6 am and play 6 games in one day.  ;)

Good question. I'd imagine an extra day would be added w/ 6 teams earning a first-round bye... or, the bottom 2 teams aren't invited to the party.  :(

Honestly, I think I'd be okay with not inviting the bottom two. That really gives those bottom ~4 teams a big incentive to keep performing toward the end of the season.

There's not a conference in America that leaves teams out of it's basketball tourney. That tourney is the chance for every team to turn March to madness!!

Here's what the original Big East -- ever notice how the sequel never quite lives up to the original  :P -- did last season with 14 teams:

UConn was left out of the tournament last year, but that's because they were ineligible. I'm not sure the Big East ever left anyone at home unless they were ineligible - I think they had a 16-team bracket a few years that ran five days and involved two levels of byes. That year Syracuse won it with that 5 or 6 OT game, didn't they win 5 games in 5 days?

Do you think the old Big 8 ever regretted not leaving ineligible Missouri out of the 91 tournament when Doug Smith led them to victory?
