I really think this is one of the games where we are going to need someone to step up, I think it needs to be Ray or Tai. I think we will get our normal great D, but just dont know how we get it done. What does everyone else think?

Completely agree. I've been saying since post-Michigan State that we need to watch out for Illinois.

Home game for them.. Nothing to lose. Revenge from 2 weeks ago. Trying to burst our bubble. Seven interrupted days to prepare for us. Groce can coach. He just needs to find a way to motivate his team.

Quite possible I've been over-thinking it, but it is certainly not something to be overlooked.

  • They will miss a lot...keep them off the offensive boards
  • Stick on Kendrick Nunn...he's the second biggest offensive threat after the black hole that is Rayvonte Rice
  • Abrams is the only player generating assists...the rest of the guys do thing 1 on 1
  • Limit fouls, stay in the paint on D...they can't shoot
  • Make Free Throws...first team to 60 might win this.
  • Whenever Egwu is out of the game attack the rim
  • figure out a way to not go on a scoreless streak

Dimes, you think we win this?

I think we match up well against Illinois and they've lost 5 games in a row at home.  We play similar styles of offense and we're better at executing and defending.

About the only thing that concerns me is this is a desperate team that's had 7 days to prepare. Groce is going to throw something different at us...how long will it take us to adjust?

I really think the difference will be our ability to control Kendrick Nunn.  He became the starter 4 games ago.  They're 2-0 when he scores in double digits...0-2 when he doesn't.  That's also been the difference between them scoring over 60.

Illinois is better then they were 5 games ago.  We had trouble putting them away until the end.

We're better than we were 5 games ago.  We're destroying teams that we would have trouble putting away earlier.

If it sounds like I'm telling you conflicting points, that is purposeful.

Illinois isn't going to roll over and give us this game.  They would much rather attend the NIT than the CBI.

I'm going to predict Nebraska to win the game but not by much.

I'm over 50% confident they will win the game, but not by much.

Three things strike me:

1) Gotta play good D. We have been really good of late and I see no reason for this to change. Never know when the offense just isn't there but D is about effort. All are playing well but a nod to Parker, Rivers and Ray.

2) Get to the line. Illinois will bruise Petteway and Shields for driving in so they could live at the charity stripe. Keep attacking the rim and earn points shooting free throws. It will also make some of their players sit down.

3) IMO, Rivers is a  wildcard in this game. He has always played well without the ball but he is starting to show up a bit more on the offensive end of things. He gets to the line and he wins those inevitable possessions that end up in a tussle for the ball. Illinois seems to me to like to play a street ball kind of game and Rivers is well suited for it. Not saying he's going to go for 20 pts but if he is in the neighborhood of 10 points, we win.

Three basic keys IMHO ...

1) stay in the game early

2) stay out of foul trouble for the most part

3) stay on the attack on offense

I know those are really general and could apply to any game we have on the road, but that's what it comes down to for us. When we start our offense too far from the hoop (7' past 3 point line versus just outside the 3 point line) it seems we have failed to say aggressive and in attack mode. This ends up with us settling for bad jump shots and this spells poor offense for us.

One thing that really scares me is that they've lost 5 straight at home like Dimes mentioned... that seems like  a streak that won't last much longer and hope were not the ones to help them end it.  I have complete confidence that we can win this, but that's just a thought that is getting to me right now.

I think you guys are overthinking this.......we have the best player on the court by a mile, ride him, play thru him, let him get us home, and into the dance......why rely on a reserve like Rivers to get us to the finish line ? lol..........sure he needs to play with effort, but all reserves always play with effort,....if he gets 6-12 pts they will be because he was in the right place at right time , but imo we dont need webster or rivers or even leslie smith to go off, we just need to keep doing what we've been doin and let our nba level player get us the win.

just like when the heat are playing in a big game......the espn analysts always say that it will come down to chalmers hitting threes or norris cole making free throws or something lol,  it rly just comes down to is lebron so much better than everyone else on the crt that if he plays to his potential the other team is really helpless regardless of chalmers, bosh, cole birdman, etc......thats the truth

I'm sure that's what Michigan State fans said as well...

Petteway has been playing great the entire year.  We did ok.

Guys like Parker and Rivers started stepping up their game and now we're talking NCAA.

We might not be .500 without Petteway but no way we're talking NCAA tourney without guys like Parker and Rivers and whoever stepping up.  It's a team game.  Everyone playing matters.

Call me crazy, but I view tomorrow night as our toughest remaining game. I think it'll be tougher than the roadie at Indiana as well as the home finale against the Badgers. I'm so confident in our guys at PBA, but I'm thinking tomorrow has the makings of a 50-48 type slugfest of a game.
