Anything that boosts our resume and hurts Minnesota's is huge. Michigan, Michgan State, Iowa, Ohio State and Wisconsin will all get in. The #2 RPI conference should get at least 6 bids. We need separation from Minnesota.

I have never understood this logic.  Just because a conference is good doesn't mean a certain number of teams are going to get in even if there are not qualified teams.

It's not a rule by any means, but more based on a conference's perception.  If NU gets to 10-8 w/ 1+ win(s) in B1G tourney, then the Huskers will be dancin' (especially w/ a victory @MSU B))

No it doesn't, but it does mean 10-8 in the Big Ten will be more highly thought of than 10-8 in the SEC. If it came down to Nebraska at 10-8 vs. an SEC team at 10-8 or whatever, the Big Ten strength would be a huge factor.

Somehow being in sole possession of 6th place doesn't feel as good as I thought.

Maybe it is because we still have a losing record.

Lets finish strong and try to get to .500 in league.

I think it's because there's still more season to be had. Let's face it... finishing in the top 3/4 would still show signs of improvement.

Wait what?

What I was saying is that being 6th place doesn't matter.  It is our resume that matters.  If we finish 10-8 we will certainly be 6th, maybe even 5th in the league.

We will deserve to be dancing not because of finishing 5th or 6th but because of our resume.

Hypothetically, we finish 9-9 and in 6th, but Indiana, Northwestern and Minnesota tank. The Gophers finish 7-11 and in 7th. We both lose in first round. Do we make it in since we beat them head to head and were 2 games better in league? Do you think Minny still gets in? Or does the 2nd-best RPI league only get 5 bids? I would say we have a puncher's chance on Selection Sunday.

If we were 9-9 and in 7th and lost, and Minnnesota was 10-8 and in 6th, I would say we don't have a prayer. That's how I see it.

My head spins when we talk about Big 10 standings and post season play.

I could see us finishing 10-8 or 9-9 and finishing 6th and not being in the NCAAs ... We need another road win at a bare minimum and beating a ranked @MSU or Wisconsin would be really important to be one of our remaining wins as well. Regardless of strength of conference our resume might not be good enough at 6th. As I look at each conference team's remaining schedule I think we have a fair shot of finishing 6th. Obviously we are not world beaters and could tank our remaining "winnable" games as well. It's fun to at least be in position to talk about this stuff however!

if you look at the schedules involved, it's going to be pretty hard for minnesota, indiana, or northwestern or purdue to be better than 8-10 at this point.  penn state and illinois aren't going to be that good.  Minnesota is the only one that I think has a shot at better... and they play @nw, @OSU, @michigan and iowa at home.  so yeah... 1-3 in those games shouldn't shock anyone.  sure they could go 2-2 ... but that would leave them 9-9 if they win their other games.   not likely... sorry.  and we own the tiebreaker anyway.

if we're 9-9 we're going to finish 6th -- straight out.  10-8 with a win over wisconsin and we're going to PROBABLY be better than that.

You're right.  We could have a better conference record than Minnesota and they could get picked over us.

You would want to root against Minnesota because they are a bubble team and the more bubble teams that falter means more open spots for us.

Yes. Conference standings and our final position have little to do with making the tournament. Was it 1998 where we finished 4th in the Big 12 standings and got skipped over and the 2 teams below us got in?

An Oklahoma team with Eduardo Najara', that we BEAT in Norman was taken instead of us, even though we had the same Conference record. Still chaps my a**

Right now, we're in sole possession of 6th place AND ...

of our 7 remaining conference games, FIVE of them are against the FIVE TEAMS AT THE VERY BOTTOM OF THE CURRENT CONFERENCE STANDINGS.

Table. Set.

Maybe we complained about the tough early schedule a little too much? Granted at the beginning of the season the home stretch didn't look all that fun either. It does seem to be setting up nicely if they can keep up playing like they have been.

You're right that we had a 4 seed in the Big 12 tournament, but we got in the NCAAs in 1998. We barely got in, but we got in, lost to Arkansas as an #11 seed I think.

Ok so yeah that would've been 97-98. It must've been 98-99 where we missed out

Yep, and sadly that is the last season that NU finished in the top half of the league...
