basketballjones Posted January 27, 2014 Report Posted January 27, 2014 At some point you have to cut ties with a player who isn't disciplined enough to follow the team rules, or the coach starts to lose the respect of the other guys. You just can't keep having to suspend a player for a game here and a game there at the last minute, because it screws up rotations and game plans. You have to be able to count on every guy on that roster, or what's the point of keeping a player around? I have seen multiple coaches lose the respect of the team after being in the siuation. One of the tougher parts as a head coach. You know their playing value to the team, and you want to make an impact on their life. But you usually get too far before you realize the damage you've done with the team. Tough position to be in. Quote

We were up 14 with 12 to play and Petteway had nowhere near 35 points at that time. Petteway scored probably 8 points in the last minute, mostly on freethrows. I would guess he'll spend today gathering input from the assistants, the captains, etc, and then we'll see where it goes. I don't have any insight as to how it will go, but you could tell from Coach Miles' reaction and comments last night, it was really weighing on him. I will say this - I believe on-court/on-field discipline and discipline in one's life off the court/in the classroom/etc go hand in hand. We may find out in the next couple of days if Coach Miles subscribes to that theory as well. Quote

I know it's old school but we have hear situations ...I'm drawing a blank wasn't there a football team this year in ncaa that voted a guy back etc. If his team wants him and everyone is 100% we should be good. I think you're right - seems like LSU and Les Miles did that a few years back. Personally I'm not a fan of that. If you as a coach want to be the leader of the program, you make that type of decision yourself, you don't push it off on the players. Taking their input is OK, as it shows that you respect what they've invested in the team/program, but you as the head coach have to make the decision I think. After all Coach Miles is building a program here, which requires taking the long term view. And instilling discipline and expectations is a significant part of the program's building blocks in my eyes. Asking the players to make a decision like this is just inviting a short term view. Ultimately if he brings Biggs back, Coach Miles is giving everyone else on the team a longer leash too. So part of the decision also comes down to whether he can trust everyone else with a longer leash. Quote

He wouldn't have been where he was to get the DUI he got (because the team was on the road as I recall) and he would have given us more returning experience at the PG spot to get us off to a good start this season (and maybe even beat UAB ). And then he'd be done at the end of this season and we wouldn't have to worry about whether he can keep himself out of trouble over the summer. Assuming Miles even lets him back on the team this year. I'm glad it's not my call but a big part of me says the minuses outweigh the plusses where Mr. Biggs is concerned, and it's time to amicably part ways. hhcmatt 1 Quote

So, while I get your point, it's not quite as you described it. it was the best NU has looked in a while, thats what the Biggs who refered to.... Miles is going after a juco PG, obviously he is not happy and its not like NU is playing for a B1G title.... It might get the attention of a few other players who might not be giving their best effort or show the ones who are giving it that its not going to waste. Could be a bad apple in the bushel type of thing. Quote

I have also heard that an announcement will be made tomorrow that Biggs will not return. He will remain on scholly through the end of the year so he can finish his degree and move on to another program. Quote
throwback Posted January 27, 2014 Author Report Posted January 27, 2014 If that's the case, it sucks but it sounds like Biggs' actions/inactions left Coach Miles with really little choice. You cannot allow one player's personal discipline problem to cause dissension with the rest of the team, no matter how much you may need him. If so, this is a move to strengthen the program long term, which is where Miles has to maintain his over-riding focus. Quote

When you are the only one late to practice and film sessions multiple times and everyone else is there on time makes it hard to be part of a team trying to build a winner.. Quote
