Deng would only be a 2-year risk and I think he'd be a good risk.  Actually, it would be ideal if he could redshirt a year as he recovers so that we'd have him for the 2 years after next.

He'd be worth a look as a Plan C.... Deng Deng would take a schollie for 3 yrs under that scenario w/ a redshirt in there & 2 yrs playing.

well the good news is hearing that the rehab is going well.  He would've been one of the top options prior to the injury.  If he can come back from it he jumps back but you obviously wonder about breaking ankles in basketball, and not the good ones.

I like the kid better than a Plan C option.  I mean, maybe if your Plan A was Jahlil Okafor.  Very unfortunate injury but the kid has some pretty impressive numbers and what little video I've seen of him shows why.  He's 6'9" and has some Terran Petteway skills.

The defender may have actually broken an ankle and a hip in that one!

Deng Deng can play dudes, he had 4 games with 20 points and 20 boards last year. Defensively he is very versatile, rebounds his but off and has a lot of dimensions in his offensive game. I see him in double digits as a senior.

I agree with others who are in favor of taking Deng. I'd take him regardless of whether or not he'd redshirt next season.

He just got his walking boot off, so his rehab seems to be on schedule. I don't see why he couldn't be fully cleared to participate by early June when the players report for summer school. By that time, I believe the bone will have healed completely.

I don't know if he could get back into form by the start of the season, but I'd take him even if he has to redshirt. Deng brings a lot to the table, and if they feel good about his rehab, I don't believe we should pass on him.

Yeah, plan C may be a bit harsh... just a lil leery of the broken ankle. My primary point was the 3 yr deal instead of 2 yrs of "risk" as you mentioned Normy. ;)

Auroran  I think it should be stated as a potential 3 year deal given a redshirt may not occur.  Guess if Deng comes and him redshirting helps balance the classes and assists the program in the long run bring him on.

very good point, not a certainty that a redshirt will be necessary...

I think Deng is a bit of an unusual player because of his length and his skill set.  I'm not a D1 basketball coach and I don't know how Miles would view it, but I don't know where Deng would fit in exactly on this team next year.  What we need is a beast in the paint who can snare rebounds, guard the post, and score a little bit with his back to the basket.

I suspect Petteway declares for the NBA this time next year.  And having Deng kind of take that scoring role after Petteway leaves would be a good fit.  I think Deng could potentially be a lethal weapon on offense but when you have Petteway scoring ~19 ppg, it somewhat limits what you'd get from Deng.  Especially if Petteway is here 2 more years.

But if Petteway leaves next year, I'd like a guy like Deng, who can find his own shots, to be here a couple of years after that.  That's my thought process on having him come in and redshirt.  It fits with balancing classes; it fits with giving us a scoring option after Petteway leaves; and we'd have the ability to go that direction if his injury requires some extra time to heal.

Now, Miles might think that Deng is the missing piece of the puzzle that gets us the personnel groupings to make a deep run in the dance.  I trust Miles on that one.  And while I think he brings a lot to the table, I just don't think Deng is the beast in the paint that can defend the bigs in this league.  And we still don't have that ~6'3" catch-and-shoot guard who can rain 3s all day long.  Would like to find one of them, too.

I think I'd take Deng whether he redshirts or not.  But I can see how redshirting him would have some advantages.

If he's as good as Nigel Hayes was for the Badgers this past season, I'd take that in a heartbeat for next years squad... but, I could also see the benefit that a RS has had for Terran & Walter if DD isn't fully healthy. Tough call, only hope he's healthy enough & comes to Lincoln as a Husker so we can find out for ourselves (assuming Miles & Co. believe he's a guy to put us over the top).

Is all this redshirt talk solely about the broken ankle?

Has to be, doesn't it? Would you redshirt an able-bodied JUCO? I mean, the reason you bring in a JUCO is because they can contribute right away. Also to balance out classes. Do you commit three years to a healthy JUCO that isn't ready to play? You could easily bring in a 4 yr player that will contribute year 1, but not be at that level that you are hoping the JUCO guy is at yet.

absolutely.  Hes a bonafide starter at the D1 level without the injury.  I saw him as a starter or the 6th man, to give the second unit a scoring threat, for the team next year.  The injury makes it tough to guarantee he's fully healthy by the time the season starts.  By redshirting it gives him a year to get healthy as well as helping to space out the classes where you can get him at his best for two years and not have such a huge Junior class as well.

Hold on. Where are you seeing the Deng to Long Beach? LBSU had a different Deng Deng a couple years ago.

This. He actually just transfered to cal st Bakersfield from LBSU last offseason
