Relentless Recruiting Pays Off

It always seemed like Doc, and Barry before him, lacked recruiting options. When they missed on their primary targets they were forced to settle on questionable second options. They not only missed on their primary player targets but they also missed on adding the needed skillsets and components to build a complete team.

 

On the other hand, this does not seem to be a problem with Coach Miles and staff. Every time they miss, all of a sudden other viable options appear. Not only options in terms of player quality but also the proper piece of the puzzle needed to build a complete team. This is a very welcome change.

I agree...and they are doing it being down one assistant coach on staff.

You gotta be willing to go that extra mile to succeed at recruiting.  Spend that extra day or two away from home to scout a second or third option.  One thing about Nebraska is that we just can not lose out on our first option and offer a second and have our name go straight to the top like the Dukes and KU's.  We have to get in on the 3rd and 4th options right away and start building those relationships.  Miles seems like he knows what he is doing when it comes to being on the trail so I will put my faith in him 100 percent.  Like I said before he can only do so much though, when in the end, it all comes down to an 18 year olds decision (ok maybe a 40+ yr old mentors decision every once and a while )

I was told months ago by someone who has connections to the program that Miles and his staff had a Plan B, C, D, E and F if they missed on Matthew Atewe. The staff is very well prepared with multiple contingency plans well in advance, which is a sign of an organized recruiting operation. You have to be proactive in recruiting, not reactive. These guys clearly understand that.

Not that I know of Norm. Perhaps I'm a bit premature in this proclamation but it just feels so different than Barry's or Doc's recruiting efforts. We miss on Atewe and Tumalla comes onto the scene. We miss on Tumalla and Herbert comes on the scene. Now we find out about the juco center prospect and that there are two transfers we are after who can't be mentioned because they don't have their releases yet. In the past, miss our top guy and we're desperately scouring the dredges of some backwood juco. It just feels so much better. And let's face it, quality big men are the most difficult find in college basketball. Wish Bo could find as many quality prospects at the DT position!

I was just going off the thread title.  I hadn't been on the board for a bit and then saw the title that said our efforts had paid off but a quick look at other threads didn't seem to indicate any new commits and I thought I might have missed something.  So, it wasn't a sarcastic question.

 

I understand the point you make and I'm not challenging it.  But when I first saw the thread, I thought I must have missed something.
