are we recruiting him for 13 or 14? I'll take Sai over this kid.

If I had to guess, my guess would be that we're recruiting him for 2013 as a player in addition to Sai and Smith.  Smith is more ready.  Sai is more of a 3/stretch 4.  This kid is more of a Euro big with decent skills.  He's able to put the ball on the floor and drive. I'd like to see him go up a little stronger.  He can use either hand pretty well inside as the workout video shows.  I don't think I'd teach hooks like that, but I'll let someone like Dean Smith address that.

He has good glide to the rim.  Also has touch from three point range.  Decent looking stroke.  Shoots around 30% but that can improve with work.  His mechanics aren't bad and that's something you can work at.  He has a good foundation.

He's long and he's seemingly a pretty decent athlete for his size.  I see a little Christian Standhardinger finesse type play to him. Wish he'd be a little stronger going up with the ball instead of trying to sneak it in underneath someone.

Overall?  This is a very intriguing player.  Decent upside.  Would probably benefit from a redshirt, but this kid appears to have potential.

Maybe he will be Nebraska's version of StandhardingerNowitzki

Hopefully he can turn left.  Standy wasn't an ambi-turner.

Much like Surge this guy would also be a tragedy if he didn't redshirt.

He's 6'9" 180 lbs.  To him, David Rivers looks like a fat kid.

Mikael Herbert, Kouvot

Pros: Herbert is a natural – good hands, good positioning, good shot, good size. Has basketball in his genes (son of the coach). A late bloomer, who has been playing basketball seriously for only two years. His club coach is a guy who is willing to develop young players, so Herbert should have a bright future in basketball.

Cons: Has been playing basketball seriously for only two years, so he is extremely raw and unpolished. Lacks both upper and lower body strength and his footwork is average. Still growing into his body and gets fatigued easily.

How can you be the son of a basketball coach, but only play basketball seriously for 2 years?

See I wondered the same but found an article from 2010 that said he'd only been playing for two years because his hometown didn't have any teams. So that would make it 5 years by now. His dad was a coach for the Toronto raptors in 08-09. Even if he didn't play on teams early I'm sure he played with his dad.

Seriously?  His dad coached with the Raptors?  Wow.  Should know the game, right?

Also, he looks heavier than Rivers.  Don't know by how much but he doesn't look that skinny.  Still, a redshirt might not be such a bad idea.

That's what I was thinking.  I wonder how accurate that weight is.  I wonder if that weight is from 2010 too

Now that you mention it, I bet the plan would be to redshirt him for year 1 (Junior year of David Rivers) so he can increase his strength and weight.  Then his RS Freshman season (Senior year of David Rivers) his primary focus could still be to increase his strength and weight.  Then when David Rivers graduates, he would be able to fill that spot, which would be his RS Sophomore season.

3 videos of him playing in some games he uploaded to youtube.

Thus, you're seeing game film instead of highlights

I'm pretty sure he is #4 with the white jersey

I did notice he was born in 1993.  He HAS to weigh more than 180.  He must be playing on a reasonably high level team and I wonder about his eligibility.  Niemann and Standhardinger had eligibility issues because they played on a team that some of the other guys got paid.  I think this guy must be playing on a team with some pros.  Two of the guys on his team, from what I was able to figure out, are former American college players -- Demond Watt and T.J. Robinson.  Watt played for Tex A&M Corpus Christi and TJ Robinson played for Long Beach State.  And now they're playing over in Finland.  So ... I assume they're being paid.

If he's really 6'9", I would imagine he's probably more like 215# or 220#.  But he might be neither.  Neither 220# nor 6'9".  Assuming he's as tall as he's listed, though, I like the package of skills.

That hella skill for a 6'10" frosh.  Great fundamentals.  Quick first step.  Excellent pump fake.  He's a matchup nightmare.  I'd LOVE to see him pick and pop in Miles' system.

Awesome.

Not worried about the weight.  He'll gain a little, but that's not his game.  Durant only weight about 210 in college.  Similar body type here.

Well, if his dad is Gordon Herbert, then his dad is from British Columbia, Canada and played for the Idaho Vandals and the Canadian Olympic team before a coaching career that included stops as an assistant for the Toronto Raptors.

Mikael -- and I'm not kidding about this -- also appears to have done work as a ... (wait for it) male model.

Seriously.  Do a google image search.  Clearly the same guy.  Never seen that one before.  Not for one of OUR recruits anyway.

that definitely is his dad.  He went to play professionally in Finland and gained citizenship there.

And as for the photos no hair on the chest, not sure about the legs.

Nebraska’s latest basketball recruiting target is a 6-9 power forward from Finland.

Let’s use the term “power” forward rather loosely.

Internet research of 19-year-old Mikael Herbert tells us that he’s 180 pounds, and if you watch these game clips from YouTube, that measurement doesn’t seem far off. (Herbert is No. 4).

Herbert, though, is quite skilled, and he’s someone who might be making an official visit to Lincoln in the coming weeks, perhaps as soon as late next week.

Herbert played the last two seasons for UU-Korihait, a Finnish team located in Uusikaupunki. This season, he played in 24 games, and averaged 23 minutes, 7.2 points and 2.9 rebounds.

He’s the son of Gordon Herbert, a former Canadian National Team player who later was an NBA assistant coach with the Toronto Raptors. He’s now coaching in Germany.

Nebraska will sign junior college forward Leslee Smith on Wednesday – the first day of the late spring signing period. That will leave, as of now, one scholarship opening for the upcoming season.

Who fills it? Herbert? Or Sai Tummala, the 6-7 wing from Salt Lake City Community College who visited over the weekend?

Or might Nebraska take both?

That, of course, would mean attrition, but if -- IF -- there’s anybody leaving the program, don’t expect any news of that regard until the end of the spring semester in three weeks.
