Miles talks prior to this Monday's exhibition game vs Chadron St.

• Ed Morrow has been out for the last 3 days with strep throat. Is expected to play in the Exhibition.
• Anton Gill has been out with a migraine and has a history of them.
• Nick Fuller has been out with high ankle sprain
• Jack McVeigh noted as a "true 3 pt threat" and Miles talked about how they need to get him shots as part of regular player movement as opposed to running specific sets.  Overall he still needs to add strength and mobility. The adjustment to US ball on offense has been easier for Jack than Tai because he's more of a spot up shooter than a slashing guard.  Still adjusting defensively but has an awareness and is a great communicator
•  Don't expect anyone to redshirt
• Jeriah Horne "has Miles' attention" about his ability to score.
• Miles is going to roll with experience in terms of starters and then it's all about figuring out what lineups work best together as the season progresses
• Mentioned lineups quite a bit though not specifics as much as trying to figure them out.

 

 

With Horne mentioned along with Nick Fuller it's safe to say at this point Miles is down to an 8-9 man rotation of Webster, Watson, Gill, Jacobson, Morrow, McVeigh, Roby, Jordy, and Taylor with Evan being the 9th man.

Personally, I do not see Evan as the 9th man.  He was one of the two players who stood out to me in the scrimmage.  He can play at the Big Ten level and has a Big Ten body.  He is certainly (at the very least)  the back-up PG.  I will also be surprised if at some point within the first several games that Horne will certainly be part of a solid rotation.

I'm with Dimes on this one.  IMO Watson will play the most minutes of anyone on the roster this year.  If we're going with a 9 man rotation, that would make the backup PG the 9th man unless he can steal minutes at the 2.

These were my two main takeaways from the scrimmage. As long as it wasn't the fool's gold of being very familiar with the opponent because they've been playing/practicing against each other so much they know the tenancies. Just like I've told everyone else that's asked if Nebraska will be good this year, I'll reserve judgement until after I see them play against someone else. But I am very encouraged. Not that I'm not always very encouraged this time of year...

My guess of the rotation at this point is:

-I expect Horne to move past Fuller as the season progresses. But it's been stated that with Fuller's minor injury Horne has temporarily moved up in the rotation  (I was surprised he was even behind him)

-Roby will be a starter as soon as he gets into game shape and gets a little experience under his belt

-Jordy and Morrow will both start games at center

-I have a feeling Gill might not meet my personal expectations that I had for him coming in. I thought he might contend for being the best player on the team but now I get the feeling he might not be top 5 (not necessarily a knock on Gill, could just be we have a lot of good players). His reoccurring migraines is also a concern.

1.  With Horne's abilities to put the biscuit in the basket -- especially on a team that doesn't have a ton of natural scorers -- it's going to be tough to keep him off the floor.  I called him my dark horse a long time ago.  I think he's going to see minutes and I don't believe he's that far down on the depth chart.

 

2.  A couple of years ago, we had another transfer who played like shit during the team's open scrimmage.  We made the NCAA tourney that year.

If you look at the other 8 guys, he's the one most likely to be dropped from the rotation because between Watson, Webster, and Gill you can fill all 80 minutes at the two guard positions. The relevance of me pointing out the 9th man is that Miles doesn't typically run that many guys.

In a conversation with Jack McVeigh towards the end of the season last year he told me two things.

1. That AWIII may go pro & very well may not be here this year

2. That Anton Gill is a scoring machine in practice & had just put up over 30 points against the starters in a 10 minute scrimmage a few days before.

 

Jack was correct on #1. I still believe that when AG is fully healthy & in game shape we will see the player Jack described.

I was surprised to see Horne that far down on the depth chart as well. But being that what i read said with the Fuller injury Horne slides up the depth chart, i assume he is currently the last player off the bench not counting our two walkons. Miles acknowledged that he is gifted offensively but still struggling with defense and schematics . I think we will see his PT increase as the season goes on. Especially if we are struggling on offense.

Horne is really interesting, given that he was a PF as a high school senior and has now lost 5% body fat and 20 lbs. He looks like a completely different player now and appears to fit well at the 3. We really could use another guy in addition to Jack who can knock down threes at a high percentage.

 

From what I've heard, the deal with Gill is defense, not offense. He can score. I just don't believe he has the defensive mindset they want quite yet.

Playing time is certainly going to be interesting.  I understand most of what is being discussed.  But here are a couple random thoughts:

• We have to figure out rotations, so there is going to be a lot of experimentation, especially in the exhibition and first game.  Why?  Take a look at the games at the top of our season.  We need to get a grasp of the rotation early on.
• If we do not play the newbies and freshmen in this exhibition and the first game, when will we play them?

I personally believe we are going to see a lot of the three freshmen and Evan.  We need to know how they perform.  Once the exhibition and first game is finished we hopefully will have a much clearer understanding of the rotation.

Man.  I just love looking at a roster with no real weaknesses.  There are plenty of days where the bench would beat the starters.  That's a sign of true persistence and high standards in recruiting.  We don't necessarily have any killers (though some might develop into those), but it also looks like a team that will be really difficult to beat.  This is the first time in decades that I've looked at a roster and truly felt there are no tragic obstacles to overcome in height, skill, or athleticism.  If I was an opposing coach, I wouldn't necessarily be pulling my hair out to scout Nebraska, but I'd tell my players that they'll have to play extremely well to win at every spot on the court.  The ISU scrimmage sounded very encouraging.  They're a top 25 squad.  I think we have a top 50 collection of talent.  We might be young, but the kids seem pretty mature and likable.  Excited to see them.

I simply do not buy that the exact rotation is set.  I believe it will not be set until the second game of the season.  Until then, it will be all hands on deck.
