Secret Scrimmage - Wyoming

maybe they could loosen them up some more next year and forget to lock the doors. Norm, next year you should invite Duke over to your place and have them play a scrimmage against NU in your driveway. I like it... Call your own fouls, make it, take it, first one to 21 by 1's and 2's, any ball on the grass or in the street is out of play. . You know we may on to something here. And then we could "Duke it Out!"2 points -

Not the sport of which you speak, Nighthawk, but worth a share: Did you hear that the NU Rifle defeated the Army? I have an uneasy feeling about that one. Shouldn't the United States Army be UNDEFEATED?!2 points -

Wyoming is a perfect team to schedule in one of these scrimmages Larry Shyatt is a great coach whose teams always achieve beyond their talent level. They do it with a very structured offense that forces you to defend for a full shot clock. They don't hit the offensive boards very hard because they are more interested in limiting transition offense opportunities and getting people back defensively on misses. They are a very disciplined defense that does a good job of defending the 3-point line and the rim. They force you into pull-ups and runners. They will rarely wow you (other than the occasional athletic dunk) and their pace can be numbing. They are relentless and disciplined in running their stuff Wyoming is very young and inexperienced this year. They're picked to finish 8th in the Mountain West. Any MWC fan knows that Shyatt will have his team finish higher. I once said to a former MWC coach that if Shyatt had UNLV's talent he'd win the MWC every year. That coach responded "No sh!t."2 points -

Coach Miles show Second Edition
Norm Peterson reacted to HB for a topic
Slow start tonight. Led off with Halloween costumes. Then spent a long time on rules changes. In the scrimmage White hit his 3s in the first session. McVeigh looked nervous. Watson played great in the second session. Benny came back to play from his grandfather's funeral which was hard for him, but he wanted to do it. Kenya is a great teacher of zone defense. Picked up a lot from Syracuse. Praised the other assistants also. Moliniari is a defensive wizard, but also a good recruiter. Got us a couple of the guys we are going to sign very shortly. Miles doesn't recruit well once the season starts. Watson is not nearly the defender that Benny is; not physically there yet. Can play Benny and Glynn at the same time. Benny can guard the 2 despite his size, can get under screens Will update if anything else of note comes up. Kind of slow tonight.1 point -

Do you think Barry Alvarez might help out by retiring any time soon for Eichy to move north, in addition to Harv stepping aside? That would be nice, but I don't see it happening. But the new Chancellor, with inputs from certain Regents, will insure that SE never hires another coach at Nebraska. What happens should the Dodgers pull the trigger and name Erstad their new skipper. Doubt it happens, but you are right, that would wreak some havoc with my scenario. We would be in a bind. As Sipple mentions in his column this morning, Eichorst does not have the confidence of upper management. He is metaphorically dead man walking. If something as strange as Ersty getting a new job happened, the timing couldn't be worse, due to all the other things happening right now. You actually think Sipple has his finger on the pulse of anything. Come on HB. You know better than that don't you? He has had a hard on for the AD ever since his BOyfriend got canned. The only upper level person that even gives it a second thought is Clare and his reason for that is similar to Sipple's. Actually, Haymarket, Sip has many high level sources and contacts. I realize he will never be given any credit by the Bo haters, but trust me, he has more going on then you will ever know. I would be happy to elaborate at one or our Railyard haunts. It's too bad you can't move on from your Bo hatred. He got fired almost a year ago and is gone. If Eichorst will always be your hero for merely doing what Harvey brought him in to do, regardless of how he does at anything else, I guess that is your prerogative. If you think Eichorst is doing a good job and also made a good football hire, and if you think Riley is the guy, hey, that's cool. But perhaps you could let those positions stand on their own rather than hurling more Bo venom. Cause if I get your post, the only reason anyone could find fault with Eichorst or Riley is because they are still butt hurt over Bo getting fired. As opposed to actually watching this team play football and knowing something about Riley's coaching record. HB, As you know I don’t typically comment much on this board and I tend to try and be positive about most things I do put on here so my comments might have come off harsher than I wanted and definitely hit a sore spot for you. My doctor suggested the other day that I might need to reduce the stress in my life and he asked me what was different. Husker football! Duh! The actual difference was I actually started to get upset at what other people think about subjects I have a passion for. Before I could care less about message board banter and stuck strictly to private conversations with individuals because I feel they are more genuine. I should probably go back to that and maybe just stay off non basketball related areas of this site. This is where I go to get away from the things that I see on Facebook, Rivals, etc... The basketball discussions and respect shown for each other on this board are miles ahead of anywhere else. I’ll just stay out of the fall sports section from now on so I don’t get so worked up. I just feel that there is a lot of information that is not being considered by most people, but I’m also not sure it is my job to step in and provide all that information either. Everyone is entitled to an opinion just like I am, even if I disagree with it. The one thing I will say is that just because we can put our thoughts and opinions out on social media doesn’t always mean we should. Especially right after something we are so emotionally tied to. So I stepped away for a few days on this to cool off because a few things you said here are not true and you really don't know where I stand on the AD and our current football coach since we haven't talked much since I told you Bo was going to be fired last fall. You made some assumptions. Dislike for Bo and thoughts and feeling regarding our current coaching staff and AD are two separate topics as you mentioned. The two you didn't assume incorrectly was my thoughts on Steve and Bo. I would be happy to list all of the reasons for why Bo should not be a head football coach, which we have mostly covered but I'd be happy to add to it as there is a substantial listing of reasons. I would prefer to do that in private if you want to continue this as I don’t want to clutter up the thread with it. I'll even buy the first beverage. I assure you we agree on some things but the Bo thing we will never agree on. I have as much of a dislike of him as you do for Harvey and the current AD. I can understand why you would want to put the stink he infected our program with behind you. I wish I could, but it still lingers. J Now let us get to Steve as a journalist. While I should have phrased it better what I was implying is that Steve has bias. You may not see it, as his articles match up with your beliefs, but he does. He is an opinion writer and everything he writes is his opinion and has bias. I know of a few "higher ups" that won't give Steve the time of day so while he has some high level sources and contacts it doesn't mean he has his finger on the pulse of everyone that matters. I have no doubt he knows the pulse of those that are still upset about how the AD hire went down and those few on the BOR who still felt like BO needed more time, but not all of the decision makers I can assure you. I'm sure there is another sports writer in this state that you feel the same way about as I do Steve. It is what it is. I stopped reading and listening to Steve well before Bo was brought back in to be head coach. So my thoughts about him have been consistent since before 2007. By the way Steve should have high level contacts and lots of them, he has been a sports writer in one of the best college football markets in the country for how many years? If he didn't and I was his boss at the Journal Star I would march down to his desk, tuck his wrinkled shirt down the front of his pants and dump all his personal belongings down the neck whole, kick him in the pants and tell him to hit the bricks. I think Steve is lazy and has been phoning it in for years. He has done very little to develop new contacts and sources and because of this he still lives in the bubble of the old establishment. His "water is wet" and "the sky is blue" columns might be great for some people, just not for me. There are more sides to the stories than he tells. That is his prerogative and he is welcome to it, but people will call him out, along with those who believe everything he writes. Let me know when you want that beer, I’m afraid I’m going to need something stronger than that.1 point -

We would be in year 2 of the Riley regime. We would have gone 9-4 last year, winning the bowl game but losing to Iowa. This year, we would currently be 5-4, beating both Illinois and Purdue. We would have a serviceable freshman qb sitting out as a redshirt waiting for the chance to run Langsdorf"s offense, whatever the hell that is. We would be trying to recruit, mad as hell, linemen on both sides of the ball. And last but not least, we would be recruiting defensive backs faster than Andy Means.Correct me if I'm wrong, but Andy was all-Conference.And he took a vicious hit way out-of-bounds by the Okie State QB whom he'd just picked off and it went unflagged in the 2nd worst no-call in a Husker game I've ever seen. (Worst one was Eric Crouch doing the Linda Blair Exorcist head turn against Kansas State.) No Penn State Norm?I was talking about no calls on obvious penalties. As far as blown calls are concerned, the Penn State game belongs in the pantheon of the most impactful blown calls in the history of sport right up there with Jim Joyce robbing Armando Galleraga of a perfect game by incorrectly calling the 27th batter safe at first. As for blown calls on Husker football, the call of no fumble (or the runner was down) on John Ruud's hit on Kelly Phelps on the kickoff in the '78 Nebraska game is right behind the expanded field Penn state game. And it is only behind it because we went on to win the game anyway, as opposed to losing a national title because of the Penn State call.1 point -

Let me give you an analogy to help illustrate my point in the post above. Let's say the Husker football program is your all-time favorite restaurant. In 1963, it was just a little hole-in-the-wall greasy spoon diner. And then a new Chef came on board and started turning out culinary masterpieces that made your mouth water just telling your friends about it. The place became the most celebrated and talked about eatery in the mid-west and people would travel from other states just to eat there. Chef Bob retired in 1970 after being awarded his 2nd Michelin Star, and brought his esteemed protégé on to take over as Chef de Cuisine. And the joint didn't miss a beat. If anything, they were even better. Over the years, they spruced up the place, added on, expanded, but maintained the high quality of meals they prepared and remained in their original location just so that they never forgot that there was a right way of doing things -- a "Nebraska" way. After 28 years and three more Michelin Stars (nearly 5 more), Chef Tom was ready to retire. And he handed the reins over to his somewhat less inventive but still very precise Sous Chef, Frank. Chef Frank was good. And the food was still pretty darn good. But it wasn't quite as exceptional as it once had been and, y'know, it was just, well, not quite as good. But you still went because it was still your favorite place and it was still the best place around for miles and you could still find the best foie gras there and they did great things with locally sourced produce. And then new management took over. They didn't want the place sliding toward mediocrity. They assumed the public wanted stuff like haute cuisine, with west coast influences. The kind of stuff you might find in some highbrow joint in San Francisco. And they brought in a new chef who was trained in all the best places and studied under some of the masters. And, while the food was still mostly pretty darned good it lacked the sort of familiarity it once had. You almost felt like they were feeding you not the style of food you wanted but the style of food they felt you should want. Because they knew better than a bunch of hillbillies from flyover country. But you still went because they still had the same artwork on the walls that you always had admired and they still served some of the same old standard, traditional fare. Although, it just didn't taste quite the same and there were nights that you left disappointed and swore you wouldn't return. But you did come back, because it was hard at first to convince yourself that the place had gone down hill a bit. And you felt a sense of nostalgia for the old restaurant and what it had been built up from and the greatness it had achieved. Even though there were times you left without waiting for the desert cart to come by and times you didn't even finish your meal. And then, when Chef Bill got canned, and they brought in a guy who had worked with Chef Frank, you felt, OK, we're getting back to business here. They want to please ME, not some dude from San Francisco who might be passing through. And, you felt a renewed sense of energy about the place and you were happy to keep going back because things seemed, for awhile, to be getting better. But, while Chef Bo certainly did an admirable job those first few years and things seemed to be heading in the right direction, there were some ... problems. Chef Bo was a bit of hot-head. He once yelled at a patron who had dared to send back his meal. (Rumors of this angry confrontation in the basement of the Cornhusker swirled around the internet and took on a life of their own.) He seemed to be unconcerned about the food critics once declaring that HE would decide how many stars to award his signature dishes. And when he was on as a cook, he was verrrrrry good. But when he was off, his dishes were catastrophes. (I mean, who tries to serve badger with a port wine reduction? Seriously?) It was clear, toward the end of his tenure that Chef Bo was on edge. He once flung his chef hat at a food critic who then gave him a very bad review. And he was forced to apologize. Which he sorta did. While almost daring the new management to can his ass. And that's the thing about new management. Don't tempt them to fire you. They feel no loyalty to you. And so it was with Chef Bo. He's gone. And they replaced him with some guy who has never had a Michelin Star. Never published a cook book. Once worked in a fantastic restaurant in San Diego but got fired after two years. Spent the last decade or so at some moribund hotel restaurant in Corvallis, Oregon. And now he's been hired to run the restaurant you still want to love, but maybe we'll eat in tonight, dear. Or go to Brewsky's and watch the Royals on TV. The results, so far, have been ... disappointingly disappointing. You wonder if they'll even renew his contract. Perhaps even fire the guy. Word is the manager is on the outs. And they've just written to me wanting to know if I'd like to renew my exclusive membership to the private lounge. Eh. Maybe not this time around.1 point -

We may lose by 20+...but the actual line...highly doubtful. 2. The sell out streak would have ended years ago if we let it....and we wont let it end next year either. We still do very well filling the stadium, and will continue to do so...but there were plenty of games I went to under Callahan and Pelini where there were quite a few empty seats.1 point -

Looking at those highlights, how many players do we have who, when they get the ball, have the ability to score in some fashion? Well, OK, all players can score in some fashion but how many do we have that you feel that if, for example, they had an open look from three that they not only would take it but could make it often enough to be a threat from that distance? In other words, how many scoring threats do we have? How many scoring threats can we put on the floor at one time? Two years ago, we had Terran, Walt (who was on that year), Shavon, Ray (at times) and, really, that was it. Last year, we had Terran, Shavon (at times) and (at times) Tai. Walt was off his game basically the whole season (or maybe the year before was the anomaly) and neither Benny nor David were what I would call reliable scorers. But look at that film: We were getting points from all over. Even Bakari was hitting shots. Jack McVeigh was hitting shots. Benny was driving and alternately dishing or finishing. When Benny dished, it was Ed Morrow who was hitting shots. Shavon, of course, was hitting shots. We know from the "box score" that Andrew White was hitting shots. We have a lot more guys who are threats to score this year. That means bench points. That means when the starters go out, we still have guys who can keep us in the game. Last year, we got very little in the way of bench production. That should change a bunch this year.1 point -
