    Jamarques Lawrence is N

Nebraska lands class of 2022 6'4" shooting guard Jamarques Lawrence from New Jersey. After transferring to New Jersey powerhouse Roselle Catholic last year and a summer with the AAU NY Jayhawks, Lawrence saw his recruiting profile increase.  Known for his shooting ability, Lawrence decided on Nebraska over Wake Forest.

This is the 4th known verbal commit for Nebraska's class of 2022.  Nebraska would currently be two over the limit if every single eligible scholarship player returned next year which won't be the case.

I have nothing but a feeling, but I feeeeeel this can't be true. Gotta be closer to 50/50 right?!? Like we have 6 open spots. Presumably they will all transfer down/laterally. And we'll fill 6 open spots. From guy moving up/laterally. Make it make sense!

A LOT of guys go into the portal and don't get an offer from anyone. (If you leave Detroit Mercy for more playing time, where do you go?) In addition, a lot of coaches oversign on recruits, and guys get bumped to make room. They move down.

It's not a zero sum game. Or maybe it is a zero sum game. I can never get that right.

To me this rationale would mean a lot of kids in the portal just stop playing basketball which may very well be the case

Some players move up and out as well. On to pro ball either in the NBA or overseas, leaving room for players to move up/laterally in the portal. So as long as there aren’t as many or more players just quitting at lower-level programs, the potential for more upward movement is there.

Because I have no idea I ask: At what point does a scholarship terminate when a player enters the portal? Does just entering it free the school from its scholarship obligations or do those only end when a player signs with another school? If, for example, JL had a change of heart and decided Nebraska was still where he wanted to be, can he just shut the portal door with his scholarship still in effect or would the school need to reinstate him?

The scholarship is gonzo.  It certainly can be renewed if he comes back; but a return is not a given.  The school can say no go, and the player is left on the outside, looking in.  Or so I have been told.

Damn, with Diop in the portal now, there goes the dream of having an Olympic caliber 3v3 team in 2026-2027.

Would love to know how the coaches feel about Jano and Frager. Are they rotation guys as freshman? Assuming Jano will be but maybe they are higher in Frager than we think

Not sure but I very much doubt JL is leaving because he thinks he losing minutes to those guys

I don’t think so either. However if we bring in a top flight guard and maybe two it becomes crowded for minutes at guard. JL, Uhlis, Sam, and Jano would have been competing for backup minutes and if we get 2 portal guys it’s extremely crowded. Wonder if Fred is comfortable with Jano in the rotation as a frosh? Or how high he is on Uhlis after seeing him for a year in practice.

things that might go thru Lawrence’s mind, obviously just guessing.

My take on the transfer portal, is that most teams are basically saying, "we're going to fight to keep (pay, promise starting position) anyone who has shown above replacement value production." We really only have 3 of those guys on the roster. Gary, Mast, and Williams. Everyone else is very replaceable from a statistical perspective.

JL (who I love and think still has massive potential) averaged 6.9ppg this year on 42% shooting from the field. On paper, you should pretty easily be able to replace a 6.9ppg guy. Btw, major props on JL for 6.9 on .420 shooting - HEY-O.

Essentially, if you aren't promised to start and/or given a massive NIL deal, you're considered replaceable. Unfortunately, this really sucks as a fan, as we tend to get attached to these guys. But from a strictly "on paper" perspective, they're just numbers, and you should pretty easily be able to replace a guy who only gets > 8ppg.

Losing guys like CJ and JL really sucks because as fans we've learned to love and appreciate them - but statistically speaking - we should very easily be able to replace them with non-tweener athletes with similar or better production. In theory at least.

Not an expert in NIL, but I'd almost imagine the dynamic is:

Team: "We have 500 units to spend across 5 starters; we have 10 units each for bench players"

Role player: "I want 100 units to stay"

Team: "We don't have the budget for that"

Role player: "I'm going somewhere who will promise me 100 units"

Since there is no "Mater Diop Is In" thread revival, I'm sensing no one cares.

Going to the school who's first win against a ranked opponent since 1998 was #21 Nebraska (2014-2015).

Since then, they have beat #6 Creighton (2016-2017) and #10 Oklahoma (2017-2018); both first round NCAA tournament wins.

Here is the embedded video if you don't want to click through to Reddit.  The thread title is misleading by the way.  The interview is with Steve Marik, not J Law:
