    Huskers preparing to take on the Wildcats Wednesday

     

    Nebraska opens Big Ten Wednesday against Northwestern, Dec. 28. Tip is set for 7 p.m. inside Pinnacle Bank Arena.
     
    This is the lone meeting between the Wildcats  and Cornhuskers this season. Northwestern is receiving votes in the latest AP and Coaches Polls.
     
    The game will be streamed live online via BTN Plus on BTN2Go. This is the 14th all-time meeting between Northwestern and Nebraska. The Huskers lead the series, 8-5. Northwestern is 0-4 in Lincoln, Neb. The teams split the season series last year with the Wildcats picking up an 85-62 win at home and the Huskers winning 76-67 on their home floor. This is the only meeting in the 2016-17 regular season.

    Scouting Northwestern
     

    Northwestern Head Coach Joe McKeown brings his 11 - 2 Wildcats to Pinnacle Bank Arena to start off the B1G regular season.
    The Wildcats return four starters from last year’s roster, including tri-captains Nia Coffey who is averging 20.6 ppg and 12.2 rebounds, Ashley Deary scoring 11.5 points a game to go along with 6.5 asists and4.5 steals and Christen Inman is knocking down 13.3 ppg..

     

    Northwestern ranks sixth in the country and first in the Big Ten in blocks per gamewith 6.7. The Wildcats have registered double-digit blocks twice and have had six or more on nine different occasions.

     

    Ashley Deary, who owns the top three NU single-season steals records, careerrecord and Big Ten single season record, is just three steals shy of breaking the Big Ten career record of 372. She is also the nation’s current active career steals leader with 370 and leads the category by 71. She ranks fourth in the country this season in steals per game with 4.54.

    • The Huskers have been outscored this season 848 -740
    • Jessica Shepard leads the Huskers with averages of 18 points and 10.5 rebounds per game.
     
    • Shepard owns six double-doubles this season, including a season-high 28 points and 14 rebounds against San Jose State.
     
    • Nebraska freshman Nicea Eliely ranks second on the team in scoring (8.5 ppg), third in rebounding (4.8 rpg), second in assists (2.8 apg) and first in steals (1.6 spg), field goal percentage (.513) and three-point field goal percentage (.429) through the first 12 games of her collegiate career.
     
    • Nebraska senior Allie Havers has competed in 108 consecutive games since the first game of her freshman season.
     
    • The Huskers have knocked down at least one three-pointer in 263 straight regular-season games.
     
    • Nebraska has hit at least two three-pointers in 142 consecutive games.

    I actually think this game presents us with huge match-up problems especially on the defensive end. Coffey is a scoring and rebounding machine and Deary with her ability to penetrate the lane and grab defensive steals is just uncanny. 

     

    I'd like to see someone with Nicea's ability to defend, go up against both of them but that's probably not going to happen. I think you got to go with Eliely up against Inman and put Shepard on Coffey and hope she has the stamina to slow her down somewhat.  Havers most likely will have to guard the big kid Hamilton which leaves either Cincore or Ramacieri to slow down Deary. Can they do it? Sure hope so.

     

    Might also be a good time to switch to a 2-3 zone periodically throughout the game. One other thing that concerns me is Northwestern's ability to get out and run, the Huskers can't afford to get beat down the court on a consistent basis.

    This will be our introduction to the B1G this season, and we'll be putting our "feet to the fire" right away with NW.  They're about 12-2 overall.

     

    We've been improving in some areas. Need to get better in the usual stuff that's been holding us down. But we're getting better at shooting 3's,..the freshman are improving. Hope Jess gets back into the flow, and has one of her more typical games, but NW will be ready for her. Need for defense to step up another notch. Row beat me to it...the zone.

    Just my own thinking...but a zone might help the defense in general. It would take discipline to stay in the zone assigned. We might be better off not playing so much man to man. NW could be to quick. Make NW shoot from the outside more. It could potentially even help rebounding if we can keep our posts and wings closer to the basket more consistently.

     

    We could use a change.... give it a test at least. I've thought so for a while.  Jess not having to chase some one around the floor so much could help her stamina a bit....maybe. ?

     

    Certainly not the coach...just looking for alternatives that could give us a little more options than we seems to have right  now.

     

    NW is almost the polar opposite of us this year...I think they have 3 or 4 experienced seniors starting...so it will be another experience for us.

    The Huskers might have a rough go this game, but I know that it's going to be tighter than what people might expect--NU/NU is developing into a good rivalry. Nevertheless, I think the cohesiveness of Northwestern will carry the 'Cats in this matchup. 

     

    This is the toughest game of the year for me, since I want it to be a great game regardless of who wins.

     

    Oh, and Northwestern has one win in Lincoln--they pulled an upset during the 2011-12 season at the BOB.

    Probably Kennedy Brown 6-5 sophomore. Lots of talk at this point...no idea how she can play.

     

    A side note...watched some of the Iowa loss to Illinois today....I think Doyle started for Iowa...she can play...very smooth shot.

    Illinois is much improved over last year.

    If we could have held Kofey (sp) we would be ahead by 6 or 8. But it was a good first half. Much better at turnovers. More in control of our game, ...still want to rush it some times.  About 50% for free throws.  Hannah seems to be doing fine.  We need a couple of 3's to drop.

     

    We'll see what NW tries to do differently in the 2nd half.....but they weren't ready to play early on. Kind of took us for granted it appeared. We must stay out of foul trouble. NW may get into trouble w/ fouls.
