Matthew Atewe -> Auburn -> Washington

Agau may have started for either UConn or UNL next year, but it may be problematic for him to find major minutes at Louisville next year.  I absolutely am not saying he won't, but they only lose (in theory) one big man off their current roster next year and have a lot of underclass talent.

Also just a note...Akoy is still far from a refined player.  He continues to improve, but he is not as polished as some want to believe.  Even if he had come here, he would have not dominated.  Just saying...

Speaking of Akoy, if he decided to attend a Prep school next year instead of going to college, would that nullify his signed LOI and make him eligible for re-recruitment?  Say he goes to a post-grad prep school for a year such as the New Hampton Prep?  He'd just reclassify as a '14 recruit, correct?  Not sayin' that's going to happen, but it's not beyond the realm of possibility is it?

Great my headache just got worse. :(

Was hoping that some of the "big" schools would think that Atewe was too much of a project and we could swoop in and get him.

Oh well we have our best trying to get him here and in the end that might just be enough.

But Conn. is closer to Toronto than Lincoln, which might not help.

He can't sign a letter of intent anywhere before March.

It would be genuinely shocking if he didn't make all of his allowed trips before that time.

It's kinda funny.  Atewe was looking at K-State and actually had them in the lead before they signed another big.  And Atewe made the comment that he was sorta worried that Lincoln might be a sort of desolate place in the middle of nowhere.  He said he was pleasantly surprised to find out that wasn't so.

Well, Lincoln has a population of roughly 300,000 people and spreads out over about 90 square miles.  It's situated about 45 minutes from a metropolitan city just to the northeast.

Meanwhile, Manhattan.  Yes, Manhattan.  Manhattan has a population of 52,000 spread out over 18 square miles.  And it's an oasis in the middle of the Flint Hills of Kansas with no other cities, major or otherwise, within about a two hour drive in any direction.  OK, towns.  Maryville, KS is a town.  Not a city.  And it's within 2 hours.

If Atewe was willing to consider K-State after visiting there and had them at the top of his list, then he's willing to travel, and being close to New Hampshire or Ontario is probably not a big factor for him.  Just guessin'.  (On the other hand, maybe that's why he never committed to KSU.)

Here is an article from UConnReport.com dated yesterday that discusses Matthew Attewe as follows:

Attention for Atewe
Matthew Atewe has already used three of his five official visits, but the class of 2013 6-foot-9 power forward from Notre Dame Prep (MA), by way of Canada, is not ready to make a decision.  "I like my trip to Nebraska a lot over the weekend, but I still want to spend my two other official visits," he told Rivals.com.  As the unsigned senior has taken official visits to Kansas State and Auburn, as well, the Wildcats are out of the mix. Nebraska and Auburn are in good standing with a number of schools trying to step into the mix to get him on campus.  Atewe wouldn't mind schools that get in late either, so for a school such as Georgetown, who recently missed on Kennedy Meeks and Dakari Johnson, that may make a fair amount of sense because of his size and defensive pedigree."

Georgetown does not seem to be a good fit for him because Georgetown is loaded with 6'8" and 6'9" underclassmen.  But, perhaps its the same issue we had with Agau, if he is enamoured by the big-time eastern schools.

Isn't UConn in some small town?

Thought I read that one time that it is in a small town and there isn't a lot to do there either.

Well, yeah, Storrs.  It is a pretty desolate locale, but...

You're within about 90 minutes of Boston, Providence, New York, Hartford, Springfield, etc. etc...

That's what I thought.

I was back East this fall and it seems like everything is about 90 min. from something big, city wise.

I can see why people freak when they come to the plains.

A place where you can actually see for more than 50 feet in front of you.

Guy asked me if Nebraska is "open spaces"

I told him that I had a girl dump me in college and started walking home.  Could watch her walk away for 3 days.

Okay old and stupid joke but it is one of my favorites when talking about Nebraska to some one who has never been here..

I think the NCAA nixed that rule that kids could attend a prep school for a 5th year this year for any year going forward.  I think thats why Tory Miller did it this year because next wouldnt be an option.

Someone on the Stingtalk.com message board said in their recruiting thread back in November of 2012 that Geogia Tech had offered Atewe, but it looks like there was no further discussion about him until a couple posts yesterday about his Nebraska visit.

Thought I read that one time that it is in a small town and there isn't a lot to do there either.

Storrs is in the middle of nowhere. It's farmland located 40 minutes or so east of Hartford. However, the following cities are nearby:

NYC 2 hours

Boston 2 hours

Hartford 40 minutes

Providence 1 hour 10 minutes

Plus we play half our home games, most of our Big East home games, in Hartford. There is a brand new practice facility going up on campus right behind Gampel (our arena).

Storrs itself is making improvements too. There are a lot of new businesses/buildings going up around the campus and there's a lot of positive energy around campus right now. We're hoping to build our football stadium on campus within the next ten or so years, and that would kind of complete everything. Storrs has grown on me ever since I started going to school there.

Not trying to knock it, just thought it was a smaller town kind of out in the middle of nowhere.

Most Universities and Colleges are because when many started they wanted to get young men away from the evils of the big cities.

So that is why many places of higher learning are in WTF kinds of places.

Just your daily trivia piece. ;)

Think maybe we saw tonight why the coaching staff is so hard after Atewe.  Giving up a lot of offensive boards.  Having a 6'9", broad-shouldered guy who can jump out of the gym might cure some of that.

I'm starting to feel like we need more guys in the Kevin Thomas mold (6'8, can jump, shoot, and drive to the hoop). The thought of bringing in a raw offensive player like Atewe scares me. I feel like defense is not the real issue with this team. Also, Atewe is only 1 inch taller and 20 lbs heavier than Thomas, so it is not like he is going to be that much more of a presence defensively. This team would be scary athletic with thomas and pitchford as the big men. There is room for both Thomas and Atewe though, so I hope NU finds a way to get both. It'd be nice to be able to start thomas and pitchford for a couple years then bring in a polished Vooch and Atewe after Thomas and Pitchford leave.

This vid is very impressive and is 2 1/2 years old. I assume he has put at least some muscle on since this vid. I really hope we offer him soon because oregon and washington st are the only real competition. We need immediate help at the power forward position to complement the talented guards coming in. Atewe probably has higher upside, but i am not sure we can afford to only bring in Atewe and have another losing season next year. We need a guy like Thomas that can help right away. Like I said earlier though, we have room for both.

Not what I wanted to hear:

Sounds like Cal is also now in the mix with 2013 #Nebrasketball recruit Matthew Atewe.

Since Matthew seems intent on taking his last two visits and appears to be waiting to see what additional interest might materialize, it seems preferable for the Huskers that such interest comes from the likes of Cal (who lost this year to Wisconsin 81-56) than from eastern powers like UConn and Georgetown.

We better hope academics and weather aren't as important, too.
