My viewing location wasn't the best for Husker Hoops though the results were nice.

We beat a team we were supposed to beat, didn't look terrible doing it, and even won by more than was expected.  The team looked pretty loose.

That technical really took the wind out of the Husker's sails.

Great effort getting to the FT line and we shot well again.

While it was a team we matched up well against, the defensive effort was good. .83 pts/poss

David Rivers had 6 offensive rebounds. He was really attacking the boards against a team that protects their glass pretty well.

I wish Benny would shoot about 7 times a game instead of 3-4. I think he'd still be efficient enough to support those numbers. In a very small sample size he's shooting 47% from 3 pt range. His 8 3pt makes ties him for 3rd best on the team

Terran and Shavon are fun to watch when they're on.

Not sure about you guys but I'll be rooting for Indiana vs Georgetown on Saturday.

Huskers.com game notes

*-Terran Petteway reached double figures for the 23rd straight game with 22 points. It was his sixth 20-point game of the year and sixth of the year.
*-Terran Petteway with his second double-double of the year with 22 points and 10 rebounds.
*-The 22 points by both Shields and Petteway marked NU’s second game with two players scoring at least 20 points.
*-Shavon Shields had his fourth 20-point game of the year and ninth of his career.
*- David Rivers grabbed a career-high 13 rebounds tonight, topping his previous best of nine against Ohio State in the 2014 Big Ten Tournament. Rivers has grabbed six or more rebounds in seven of the last eight contests.
*-David Rivers’ 13 rebounds matches the high for any Husker in Tim Miles’ three seasons.
*-Nebraska went 2-1 in Hawaii for the second straight time (also 2006)
*-Nebraska has held seven of its 12 opponents under 40 percent shooting, including each of the last four games.
*-Nebraska had 10 or more steals for the second time this season (11 vs. Omaha)
*-Nebraska improves to 1-0 all-time on Christmas and 4-0 all-time against Ohio

Versus Ohio:

- The defense was good...

- The offense (actually) was good...

- Rebounding today was good..

- Although I thought FT shooting was poor, it actually ended up being good.

- Ball diistribution was decent...

- Our inability to hit open looks has become a bit disturbing

- Shot selection was good

- Effort was good

- Overall body language is a bit crappy.  Not talking just about TP either.  Except your foul, stop the drama.

- Bashing Tai is not helping him...keep it up if you wish...but he has good athletism...his defense is good...he rebounds well...he plays good help defense...his free throw shooting has been good...he is not forcing shots, he looks good shooting, the ball is simply not falling.  We need Tai, even when Moses and Leslee returns.  Hopefully the fans can show trust in Tai and he will get his mojo going.

- Walt found his game during this trip...that makes me happy going into the Big Ten.

- Special kudos to David this game.  He hustled his butt off and made a positive difference today.  Same issue that Benny had last year though.  If he is not going to take and make open 15 footers, the defense is not going to play him and the middle will be cemented with his man sagging in...we need him to be able to take and make those shots.

Offense was much better, it also helps when you hit open shots.  Defense was very solid again and that hasn't always been the case this year.  I think we are finding our groove defensively.  Turnovers are still brutal, 12 games in I'm worried this is going to be the case all year.  I can live with some turnovers, they are going to happen but if you are traveling or throwing the ball behind your back into a turnover that's just bad.  Time to find a way to get 11-12 more wins.  We can do it.

This was the best part of the trip in my book. His strong defensive & rebounding game vs Cincy got him started, and his offense came around in Hawaii. Very pleased with his renewed confidence. And it should only get better once we get Smith & Moses back, as he can get a little more of a break on the defensive end. The shot fake & hard dribble into the 15-ft jumper or the drive all the way to the rim was shown just enough in Hawaii to help him going forward. Even though he missed the layup vs Ohio off the drive, just showing that move on film a couple of times per game will force teams to think twice about running at him so hard out at the 3-pt line.

Also liked how T Smith has shown steady improvement - NU can definitely count on him for solid minutes in B1G play.

And NU's guards really did a very nice job of taking the top scoring guard out of the game both vs LMU & Ohio. #3 from Ohio hit some really tough shots early, but then didn't score the last 15+ minutes I believe. Great job defensively out on the perimeter, mainly from Parker, but quite a few guys chipped in on him. And NU did a nice job on Paine (sp?) from LMU too, even when Benny had some foul trouble.

I seemed to me watching the game that we went back to more of the "raid" style defense we used on our run last year.  Every time the ball entered the paint a second guy would swipe at the ball, essentially double teaming the guy, creating a lot of havoc for the Ohio player with the ball.  The defense was excellent, and the offense finally started to clock a little bit.

I really liked Walter drive to the basket and Imthought thtnhe was hit in the chest or arm that caused him to miss that layup. I remember ahouting and one as he was hit and the ball, rolled out. Wqs surprised when it wasn't called.

.83 pts/poss

What's considered ideal for this metric? 75%? 50%?

Points per possession aka Offensive efficiency.

You calculate it by points divided by possessions.

It essentially shows how well you're doing on offense (or defense) independent of pace.

Thus scoring 60 points in a 50 possession game is much more impressive than scoring 70 points in a 75 possession game.

I'm using KenPom for the numbers.  He has to estimate possessions as this isn't a stat kept/published by the NCAA

Since we need to know things in terms of possessions and possessions is not an official NCAA statistic, it must be estimated. The formula I am using is:

Possessions = FGA-OR+TO+.475*FTA

This is a pretty standard computation that accounts for when possession is lost by a team. The only bit of uncertainty is the free throw portion, because we don’t always know how a team got to the line. If they are shooting two, then the two FTA’s account for one possession. But if they go to the line for one after making a shot, then the one FTA has no possession attached to it, because the previous FGA accounts for it.

The .475 multiplier estimates how many FTA’s represent one possession. This figure has been derived using play-by-play data.

The Huskers are looking to hold the defense under 1 point per possession if possible.

Kenpom displays an overall defensive efficiency number that also calculates for competition.

Currently Kentucky is holding teams to .827 points per posession (82.7 defensive efficiency) which so far is historically good and best in the country. The Huskers are currently 17th in Div I at 90.0 points per possession. That matches/exceeds the level of last year's squads and the best Doc Sadler squads.

It doesn't take a genius to see our offense stinks this year and the numbers back that up. Currently we're 240th in the nation in offensive efficiency and the last time we were this inept was the Barry Collier team that dropped a game to Alaska Fairbanks. It's a combination of turnovers, poor 3pt shooting, and poor offensive rebounds.
