This board is only going to get bigger.  It has great members, it's well run, and most importantly....the future of Nebraska basketball has never been so bright.  My concerns about the overall quality of the board stem from the fact that this board will grow and I don't want what we currently have here to suffer because of that.  Thus, some things I want to evaluate during the off season are

  • better defined rules/expectations - This isn't really a problem for people that have been around...it's more of a getting started sort of deal.  At some point I plan on cruising around some other established basketball boards and seeing what's up
  •  figuring out how to get the community engaged more - I think a Husker basketball wikipedia is sorely needed among other things
  • figuring out how to attract and reach more people
  • figuring out how to harness and utilize our numbers as a positive force in Nebraska basketball - "Husker Power" wouldn't have happened without the Red Zone and the U but that idea originated here.
  • etc

Fire away if you have anything else.

P.S.  Full disclosure...I voted for beer.

Dimes: I'm sure you have checked out Son Of Sam Horn, the mother of all sports boards and the only one, as far as I know with a successful book "...Win it For" consisting of one thread from their site. Hopefully this board will never become as big and confusing as that one, but we can only hope. And thanks to you and all the other mods for all the time you spend on this one.

As long as we avoid any "Ricky from River City" type of people from spreading their virus over here...I think this board is one of the best. For those that don't know who Ricky is...you can see his postings on pretty much any Husker related story on the LJS website. He lost it the other day when he posted that TO became AD because he didn't have anything better to do..and that the U should have kept Peterson and Callahan as they were making positive changes at the U. Um....yeah.

There is a certain culture that exists on this board that is different from many (all others that I've seen.)   We don't typically genuflect to the "insider" and we don't have the typical "internet tough guy."

I can think of a couple of people who showed up here and assumed we were like other boards and it took them a bit to realize this board is different.  Tone down the hostility and just have a conversation.  One of them turned out to be a fantastic poster; the other disappeared.

I've mentioned before what I have called the paradox of the insider.  You think you want them because they will tell you secrets that others don't know.  But the problem is that they then possess (and want to possess) a certain amount of "power" or "authority."  And the trouble with that is that when Mr. Insider lays his insider trump cards, discussion ceases.  That happened over on the Rivals hoops board and the place turned into an empty wasteland where now there is practically no discussion.  When every new thread starts out "Question for Mr. Insider" you're not going to see a lot of discussion.

The other fallacy that other message boards have fallen into is the thought that only the experts provide value to the board.  And it's a bigger problem if your "expert" is also an "internet tough guy" or has a posse of "internet tough guys" who yap at his heals.  The reason that thinking only experts provide value to discussion boards is a fallacy is because average Joes listen to experts, the defer to experts, they don't discuss things with them.  So, a board that possesses the "only experts provide value to the board" culture will either see discussion disappear or turn into pissing contests between those who consider themselves the "experts" and those who don't want to yield to the "experts'" points of view.

Right now, we have some insiders who don't act like insiders (they haven't adopted the "insider" status as a means of stroking their own egos) and we have experts who don't follow the "internet tough guy" approach that "either you agree that I'm right or we'll have a problem."  Only because we have avoided those negative archetypes, have we managed to have such a great board.  In which regard, the "Cheers" references became an apropos, if only accidental, motif.

Just posted about him on the women's page. He says that UNL is padding the attendance of the NCAA game. I am having fun just posting 9,585 any time he posts anything anywhere. I would like for Royal to go get him. That would be classic, but he doesn't respond to what anybody says to him, so it is not as much fun as it could be.

Also having the best mod on the web helps too. Dimes does a great job of letting guys hang themselves here. We, okay me, often fall for the hidden troll hook, line and sinker. The almost fight with the wisky fan had me in the boat and gasping for air before I ever knew it was made up. Not Dimes he let him go a while then cut him off.

For that I am most thankful. This is the best place to be and am always trying to get people to join.

I'm pretty sure I've deleted this guy or one like him several times.  If you're first post is a diatribe about college coaches being overpaid, go back to the LJS comment garbage heap.

Dimes: I'm sure you have checked out Son Of Sam Horn

It's been a while.  Cool to see they're using the same forum software and it's a quality site though I'm thinking more college sites. You can definitely blast away at pro players, for example.

We certainly do. Quality is quality.

haha...is that you doing that over there on the LJS board? There's him and a couple other trolls that would get destroyed by 99.9% of the posters over here.

For those that haven't had the privilege of reading one of Ricky's postings on the LJS site:

Ricky From River City - 20 hours ago I pay extra for digital access to my favorite paper the Lincoln Journal Star.
I read the article again and it did say "announced" attendance. But Damnell Dickson was trying to be tricky getting his readers to believe that actually 9000 + people showed up at PBA for a women's game. No way.
And just to be clear, I root for the Husker women's teams. As a rule, any coach that Tom Osborne hired I root against, because T O should have stayed away not come back as AD just because he was bored.
So, that means I root for the NU baseball team to lose, because TO hired Erstad even though he never coached before and does not have a college degree. I root against the basketball team because T O hired Miles, and I was right to root against that guy after he got tossed in the NCAA game.
And of course it goes without saying that I root against BO, and hope the football team loses every game, even against the powerhouse Florida Atlantic team (minus the wacky brother).
Wow Osborne sure did spend a lot of money hiring and firing coaches to never win any championships.
So I am right and that is what gets under the nerves of Husker Homers.

Well, I'm guessing Dimes deleted my reference to Ricky's full name.  But Ricky is not quiet about who he is and shares his real name around the internet all the time, so I didn't blow his cover or deprive him of anonymity.  The fact is he's a retired postman from Omaha and he's quite open about that and what his first and last names are and discloses them himself with an almost urgent regularity.

I could post a link to the twitter feed of this Ricky I'm talking about and you'd see it's all there.  He doesn't try to disguise his identity and so I didn't feel like I was in the wrong naming his name.  Apologies for putting a mod in the position of having to delete the post.

Nope though I would have.  I'm not the only one who mods around here. ;)

HHCScott is more of the bouncer around these parts, Normy~!

Well then, thank you Scotty!

You are the hidden, but necessary part of this equation!

Thank you!

It wasn't me this time. Sorry.

And a ton of credit for the quality of this board, in moderation, but also in site design and operation, social media, t-shirts,  belongs to Dimes. I've not been able to be as active this past season as I was in the preceding years, and Dimes has been the glue holding the whole operation together. And none of us would have had this without Dave's initiative.

Thanks also to all of the longtime posters who have stuck with us through the transitions and the tough years to see this new era. You guys are the best and truly represent Nebraska.
