Might this be a Destination Job for our Coach??

Jobs I think Miles would leave for:

Kansas

Indiana

Michigan State

Ohio State

Duke

UNC

Louisville

Kentucky

If we can get to a point where we can consistently compete against them, I don't see that happening. Sure, he can leave for a traditional powerhouse, but if he gets paid more to stay, then there's almost no reason to take that risk.

I don't know if this will end up being his destination job but Nebraska has a lot to offer for a guy like Miles.  Proximity to family is a good one.  I have to think it's not just about Miles, though.  He's married.  He has young kids.  And I gotta believe the wife would want their kids to enjoy some stability and grow up in one place.  And you about can't find a better community for a family like theirs than here in Lincoln.

This is what I keep telling myself and hoping.

I have to admit I've been giving this subject a lot of thought lately.  Here is what it comes down to - win or not, I like everything about Miles and what he stands for.  Even when the time comes when he isn't coach, I'd like to see him represent the university somehow.  He's not there now, but someday he could be the Bob Devaney of hoops (to borrow a Shatel phrase).

I don't know how you make this happen, but if I'm Harvey Perlman, and I'm thinking of the university's athletic programs, I'd want Tim Miles to be the A.D. 10-15 years from now.  That's light years away in the athletic world, though.

  • 3 weeks later...

If we as fans do our job filling the seats, the administration does its job writing the checks and providing the resources and the staff does their job recruiting and coaching... everything is in place to make Nebraska Miles' final college stop.

But if all that happens I doubt it's his last stop. If 5-6 years from now the Timberwolves or some other NBA team offer him a job I would think he takes it.. And I would in no way hold a grudge if he did.

Thing is, regardless of wether he's here for 25 years or leaves at the first big offer' We just need to make sure we've put ourselves in position to be an even more attractive option for landing the next great Husker coach as we were for Miles.

Hiring a coach is a crapshoot.  It's not as easy as just throwing money at the next big name.  The last big name is getting fired from some other job now.  That's why I tend to be more patient with a coach, knowing this is a tough job.  And I don't jump on the "fire him now" bandwagons that seem to crop up as soon as the going gets tough.  I think that kind of attitude is stupid and short-sighted and it's a good thing those types of people aren't in charge of the athletic department.

Once you find a guy who works, you better hang onto him.  Or her.

It almost makes me laugh when people on this or any other board presume to know who the next great coach would be.  Tim Miles was on virtually none of our radars when Doc was fired.  And when TO decided (emphatically, it appears) that THIS IS our guy, a lot of folks around here (not everyone but probably most everyone) felt a little disappointed.  A little let down, even.  Complaining we didn't throw money at John Groce or Shaka Smart.  Didn't make that "splash hire" that everyone assumed we needed in order to make our way out of the cellar.

Once you get "that guy," knowing how hard they are to find, you damn well better figure out how to keep him.

This is just me but I think he stays as long as his folk's health stays good.  He is a family guy and being able to be close to home, brothers and sisters and  his folks is important to him.  Also think his kids will graduate from high school here.  They have moved a lot in their young lives.  I know others have moved much more and that is the nature of the job, but if you can stay for awhile when your kids are young it helps because it is such a migratory life.

One bad year and some will be putting a for sale sign in his yard. :D

A good quote from The Dark Knight reminds me of this.  You either die a hero or live long enough to see yourself become the villain.

Thats so true in coaching.  People love you when you're winning but eventually your time runs out and you can go out on top like TO and die a hero or you stay too long and you become the villian and people want you gone (basically any coach thats been fired).
