This thread isn't about that specific shot at the end but more about the general feeling of us losing these 'type' of games. The last one I can recall was when #23 for TT buried us at the buzzer with a top of the key 3 when Doc & the tiny squad was fighting to get on the NCAA bubble.

Losing Ray is going to hurt, he is flat out deadly when he gets going. But I have to think that next year, with a certain level of individual improvement and team chemistry, this team has a chance to be on the bubble and win some of these dang heartbreakers.

Thoughts?

I agree with many in other posts that Biggs was going to get us a good to great shot without the timeout & looking back, maybe miles should of let him go? If he gets trapped or in trouble, than you can still call the timeout?

Ray has been far from deadly this year.  He has flashed signs a couple times that he is coming out of his shooting woes but he is not clicking yet.  We need that guy that can bring that deadly eye every night.  Then that shot will start falling.

We have to figure out a way to share the ball and attack the basket and not settle for perimeter shots.  Having a guy who can hit them is nice, and you want that from time to time, especially when it's wide open.  I thought a couple of times last night, we settled for a perimeter shot before trying to get a more high-percentage look.

And when we did attack the rim, it was usually one guy driving around a screen trying to get to the rack by himself.  When Michigan did it, they broke us down on dribble penetration, forced help on D, leaving a guy open for an easy basket.

If you count the number of "easy" baskets versus the number of "earned" baskets, Michigan was waaaaay ahead of us.  We had a few.  There was a nice Petteway feed into Smith for a dunk in the 2nd half.  But we didn't share the ball nearly as well as Michigan.  And I hate to say it but this goes back to exactly what Dean Smith warned about (and was criticized for) at the very beginning of the season.

We're still a young team, but so is Michigan, by the way.

We start winning these types of games when we start getting the benefit of the doubt. In order to get that, we need to win games. It sounds weird but we just need to start winning period, to gain that respect. I don't want this to sound like I'm whining about refs, but that's exactly what I'm going to do. Refs are not the reason you lose games like last night, we had plenty of chances to make a play and win anyway, it's just that refs can make it that much harder to win. We are Nebraska. We haven't won anything. We get no respect, nor do we deserve any yet. But my god, when is the old saying 'you get calls at home' going to ring true for our team? Seriously. Obviously I'm extremely biased, but I've seen last nights situation play out over and over and over and over again for us on our home court. A couple missed out of bounds calls? That's to be expected in any game. I'm talking about the 50/50 call that is extremely close. The type of call where it's so close that the official is just going to call whatever they want to call. When we start getting those calls, we start winning games like last night's. If we had an official under the basket last night on Michigans final possession that didn't care if Michigan lost, he calls the charge and we win. What makes it even more weird is that nobody really knows how they're calling that particular secondary defender block/charge at this point in the season. My point is though, that we have to win games, earn the respect, and then maybe we get that call at home and win games like that one last night.

Is it the officials' fault that we lost last night? No. Did we have chances to win and things we could have done differently to get the opposite outcome? Absolutely. Did certain calls that were made make it more difficult for us to win? Yes. Is Nebraska respected as a program? We all know the answer to that. Does that need to change? Yes. How does that change? Winning. So, to bring this rambling to a conclusion we need to win games before we start winning the type of game we saw last night.

We've had plenty of things go our way at the end of games. Think about #2 Texas a few years ago. Iowa last year....etc, etc.

You're right, we've had some things go our way occasionally. So if we've had plenty of things go our way, you're happy with the wins we've had and therefore fine with the fact we lost last night? It's okay because one time we won a close game or two? These are stupid questions because I know you're not okay with it. You're not happy with the number of wins because everybody wants to win every time. More, more, more. We need more wins. What's better? More or less? Now I'm starting to sound like one of those commercials. We need more wins! Damn I'm disappointed. Can't imagine how those players feel. You can definitely see how much they're putting into this. Walking off the floor last night those guys looked pretty emotional.

After we beat Texas with JBD & Co., we had a REAL chance to make the Tourney, then we preceded to lose 1 or 2 point games against Iowa St., Colorado etc. to finish the season. Yes, these games are a tuff, tuff pill to swallow.

We lost a heartbreaker vs K state the following week in lincoln as well. Bob was packed & rowdy! we just couldn't get a stop. I think we have a real chance with our young guys to get really good really soon. We just need another big or two badly.

Idk.. just ready for the wait to be over fellas.. its been long enough.

If you want to see an end of the game call that did not go our way...watch the replay at the end where Robinson jumps on Smith's back during the second tip try....a blatant no call...and when they go to the slow mo monitor...there is still time on the clock.   Two shots to come.

Here's what just really infuriates me...with about 5:00 minutes left we were down by 3 and Petteway drove from the top of the key and scored as Stauskas tried to draw a charge. Stauskas was leaning backwards as he tried to draw it, so Petteway jumped into him and scored. No call. Michigan coach went nuts, but on watching the replay the referee says no charge because the Michigan player wasn't holding his ground. SO WHY WASN'T IT A BLOCKING FOUL? Explain to me why that is a no call situation, but then Smith's is a blocking foul? Both were just outside the arc. Both players weren't completely set. Both drew contact and fell backwards. The inconsistency is just absurd.

Also, you are dead on Section_316. If Smith is playing for Ohio State or Michigan State and that's a Nebraska player coming baseline for the go-ahead basket, I'm convinced that's a charge 100% of the time in Columbus or East Lansing. It is what it is. We have to man up and start winning these games.

You guys ok with petteway taking the shot? I am, he was unguardable down the stretch… I do think we would of gotten just as good, if not a better shot had miles let Biggs attack & not called a timeout. O well. Move on I guess. Gotta play well sunday to stay in the game @ Purdue… we have been absolutely brutal on the road.

Refs are not the reason we lost last night.

  • The reason we lost last night was because Leslee Smith missed two tip tries at the buzzer.
  • The reason we lost last night was because Terran Petteway missed a scoop shot on our final possession.
  • The reason we lost last night was because Petteway missed a defensive switch on a ball screen on the wing on Michigan's last possession, leading to a wide-open drive to the basket for the go-ahead score.
  • The reason we lost last night was because Petteway missed a free-throw in his final trip to the stripe.
  • The reason we lost last night was because we couldn't corral a loose ball that got tipped away from Shavon Shields and Leslee Smith and turned into a run-out dunk by Glenn Robinson III in the last couple of minutes of the game.
  • The reason we lost last night was because the refs:
    • failed to call a charge on the Michigan player who scored their last basket.
    • failed to call a foul on Terran Petteway at mid-court on Glenn Robinson's breakaway dunk, which would have been a foul on the floor and resulted in a Michigan inbound play at mid-court, rather than a dunk, because we weren't in the bonus.
    • blew half a dozen other calls to the benefit of the visiting team.

There are plenty of reasons we lost last night and there's plenty of blame to be spread around.  But the refs aren't immune.

Nick Bahe mentioned in his game recap this morning (clip is in the Official Media Thread) that Tim Miles is undefeated at Nebraska in games decided by 5 points or less, fwiw.

Correct. Journal Star said today that prior to last night Miles was 8-0 in games decided by 5 pts or less.

that game was a heartbreaker, but there were lots of positives in spite of the tragedy.

it'll come. iowa was like that last year and the year before. michigan had these two years ago.

indiana's getting losses like that this year.

the margin is so thin in this conference, that experience is a huge deal, and Michigan had much more than us in spite of our similar youth.

we'll get these eventually. we will.

Don't forget the blown alley-oop from Petteway to Shields on the breakaway early in the 2nd half. That one was brutal.

And on Petteway's missed free throw, why in the hell did the official at half court stop the game just before the ball was handed to Petteway and turn to UM's bench apparently to tell them to sit down? Not sure I've ever seen that, especially between free throws. Terran had to stand at the line several seconds as everyone turned toward the UM bench to see what was happening, and although that's no excuse to miss the FT, it sure didn't help his concentration. It almost worked like a timeout for UM, as far as "icing" the FT shooter. Very odd. Maybe something else was going on & I just missed it.

However I agree the refs didn't cost NU the game. We made enough of our own mistakes. The refs just failed to realize they were in Lincoln, not Ann Arbor.  ;)
