I have to say that I practice twice a week with the local speed skating team as they prepare for nationals in Lincoln this summer. That is intense. HOWEVER....these guys at half could give the Shimshams a run for their money as least entertaining.

I thought it was a "meh"halftime show, but not the worst ever. Maybe with more students the crowd would have gotten into it more. I would say though that I enjoyed the Scarlets routine a lot more.

Speaking of students....when are they going to show up? I'm talking numbers. Obviously not calling out the ones who are showing up as that was already done. I know its break. But we supposedly sold out of the student tickets. Did they give the students too much of an allotment at too small a price? Such a bargain that some say, 'nah, I'll skip this game'? I know it has some to do with the product and what kind of product we've had the last several years. But we need numbers to show up. Will they keep showing up for these conference games if the losses keep piling up this season?

How about free admission for the students? Show up with your N card and you get in. Instead of selling student season tickets just give free admission. Create some competition to get into the building and into the student section. Reward attendance from the previous year by 'reserving' a certain number of spots. Guaranteed admission to a certain number of students for the previous years attendance. You know, earn your spot. Freshman, work your way in. Reserve those guaranteed spots until 20 minutes before tip and if they're not there (they will be) those spots open up to the next people in line. The N cards all work off barcodes, right? I know that winning solves the issue of students showing up, but they have to guarantee that all of allotted student seating is filled.

I doubt this game was included in the student ticket package. Holiday games usually aren't.

I think you're right. I think it was one that they had the option to buy. I just worry about the amount of seating they've sectioned off for the students. Totally expected to this point but the only games that have had both the side and under the basket sections full were the FGCU and Miami games. I just hope we can sustain numbers if we continue to lose.

They were separate.

In fact, they were given assigned seating so the students weren't all able to sit by each other.

Let's see what OSU at home brings

How do you expect students to show up who are on break?  This game wasn't part of their season ticket package so any student who showed up had to pay extra for this ticket.  There would have been a great student crowd if they were already back in school.  I think the student section has been pretty good so far this year.  Can't find a reason to be to harse with them when they don't even have a season ticket to attend this game.

I didn't really have any beef about the numbers last night. My main question and concern was whether they allocated too many student seats overall and whether numbers would even approach filling those areas into the meat of conference play should we continue losing. Time will tell.

I'm not sure they had to pay for the tickets, but rather just "claim" them, and I get that it was supposedly assigned seating but I'm guessing it was assigned seating in the way it was at football games when I was in college, as in your ticket has a seat number on it but it's not likely that you'll be sitting there. (Red Zone members, correct me if I'm wrong -- I very well may be.) Regardless, it seemed to be about on par with the rest of the year -- most of the side section filled up with students checking Instagram, and the end section filled with single-game people. The only difference was that the 300 section seats were also filled, albeit with fans who may have been making noise but are too high to hear, which means we at least sold those seats rather than just having people move down to sit there.

Then again, the whole place was pretty quiet until the last 10 minutes or so. I could carry on conversations at normal volume with my dad sitting with me for most of the game. We have decent seats in the 100 level, but it gets sort of awkward when we can hear the guys talking on the bench...but it's quiet enough in there that sometimes we can.

In regards to the Stauskus quote about the hostile atmosphere, is it possible that we're under estimating how raucous other places are?  We're not Duke or KU or in the elite or anything, but is it possible that fans all over the country sit on their hands as much as they do here?  TV isn't always great at accurately portraying the atmosphere in the venue and often make it look a lot more hostile than it really is.  I know I've thought more than once after watching a replay of one of our games that it seemed more hostile on TV than it was in person and vice versa.  Because when it got loud last night, it was really, really loud. I'd love to see the fans (and I'll admit to being part of the problem, I'm not a big screamer during games...) be more active for more of the game, but is it possible that other places aren't as rowdy for every game than we think.

Off topic but that new intro video was god awful too

I didn't think it was any better or worse than then one we used in the first part of the season.  I wish they would show past game winning shots with Kent's call as the intro.  They did that a few years ago and gave me chills each time hearing Pavelka yelling "GOT IT"

We still haven't seen the return of that video they played at the opener, the Morgan Freeman sound-alike one. That one was pretty good. Just play that one for the intro. I thought they would break out something new and great last night for the conference home opener. It was new it just happened to also be really bad.

I'll take a stab at this, uneb.

Probably the reason why you get the impression that every other arena is raucous from tip to the final buzzer is because the games that are going to be on TV (and, additionally, appealing for the average viewer to watch) will be the higher profile games against teams competing for something.  Like a conference championship.

But in reality, a lot of times, crowds are disinterested and sit on their hands a lot.  If you watch practically any Missouri game you'll see a sparse and quiet crowd more often than not.  Pathetic if you ask me, with a top-25 program and a new(ish) arena to play in.

I think our crowds are pretty good to be honest.

I'll bite...I've been to a decent number of away games, I'd say (about a dozen in the last 5-6 years) and it seems to be a couple of factors. Newer gyms seem more cavernous, which seems to mean less noise (i.e. Mizzou -- beautiful arenas but it's like a museum vs. Minnesota in the Barn -- when they got going, HOLY CRAP it was loud). Obviously better teams = more raucous fans (KU, Texas at the time we played them, I think in 2009? Whenever DJ Augustin was still there). And then quality of play, obviously, is a factor (Iowa State when they scored 11 points in the first half against us vs. Iowa State in the second half when they came back to beat us). In-game entertainment (not so much halftime, but during timeouts) made a difference too -- K State and Cincy both played almost exclusively Jock Jams and that god-awful roaring noise, but their fans didn't get pumped much; Iowa State had some really awkward promos but also some really good ones; Texas and Minnesota actually had some of the better ones I've seen). Creighton is just Creighton...lots of congregating around the beer stands, but they can get loud too.

I'd venture to say we fall somewhere in the middle, but it's a spectrum based on those factors too. When we played well, avoiding the awkwardly-timed Runza Roundball Rampage, in the Devaney, we'd rank up there as one of the louder places I've visited. When we play poorly against Northern Illinois in a brand-new, not-all-that-intimate arena with a really high ceiling...not so much.

Obviously others may differ, and I'd say I have a decent sample size compared to a lot of fans but there are always going to be more well-traveled fans than I am (like I said, I haven't been a fan long compared to a lot of lifers here, and this is all pretty recent). But that's just been my observation.

I think one of the problems is that the new arena has drawn a lot of new "season ticket holders" who aren't really "fans" of Nebraska basketball.  Tjhey are more like "observers" at this point.  The people who sit in front of me are family who have never been season ticket holders before and they basically just sit on their hands (or text on their phones) the whole game.  And this even includes two teenage boys!  In fact, everytime I or anyone in my group stands up to yell or cheer, they look back at us like we are complete dorks and snicker and "whisper" things to  to one another like "geez, its only a game."  I usually am impervious to these types of things, but after a while it wears on you b/c they actually make you feel like you are complete idiot for cheering and yelling during games.
