It's funny how Memorial Stadium is considered dry...apparently the skyboxes aren't in Memorial Stadium.

Maybe 5-10 years ago, but that's not really the case anymore because the university cracked down on it.

Any boozing that occurs in the suites anymore is really no different than the boozing that occurs around the rest of the stadium i.e sneaking a flask/shooters into the stadium

i've also heard that beer will be sold next year.

as for a "snowball effect," as others have said the only other sport that even has the option to sell booze is baseball. Every other venue (Devaney, Memorial Stadium, etc.) is university owned while UNL is a tenant at PBA and Haymarket Park. I don't believe the venue being on or off campus has anything to do with it, though.

Being on campus has everything to do with it. UNL is a dry campus, no alcohol anywhere....dorms, frats, the union, etc.

Wisconsin is a wet campus, alcohol everywhere....dorms, frats, the union, etc.

Booze can be sold/consumed on campus pending a waiver and hiring a 3rd party vendor to serve.  There are multiple "wet" events at the Wick Alumni Center every year, which is most definitely on campus.

possibly, idk.  a couple fraternities did the same thing when i was in college (hired a 3rd party vendor and served booze in their house).  Maybe it has to be designated as an alumni event?  Not sure

The alcohol that is served at the Wick, Lied, etc. are catered in by a third party. They have licenses that they get for the individual events. I had always been told that alcohol could not be served during NCAA events if they are on a college campus, regardless of wet/dry status. I know that several of the Big 12 schools were "wet" campuses when I was in college, but they did not serve alcohol at any of their football games I attended.

Nebraska Wesleyan...wet campus.  I'm sure some swimming events could take place there in order to get UNL students to come.  200 meter butterfly and a bud light, couldn't ask for anything else on a Sunday afternoon.

I don't think the economics are as simple as some make it sound.  Just because they sell beers for $7 doesn't mean the university sees all or even a good portion of it.

Does anyone know what percentage the university gets of concession sales?

Oh my god. Whatever their percentage is, they would be turning away tons of free money by not having it. The cost of 20 oz of beer and the plastic cup is 65 cents. Then they sell it for $8. Profit galore. I'd take a small percentage of that profit for doing nothing. I did forget to subtract the 4 cents that you're paying the concessions staff to pour the beer, hand it off, and make change for your twenty though.

Read Section 8 in the linked document (page 10, line 25) for a detailed explanation of the agreement UNL and the city of Lincoln as rent and concessions are concerned:

http://lincoln.ne.gov/city/council/agenda/2011/102411/11164a.pdf

Annual UNL Rent

Athletics agrees to pay the City UNL Rent of Seven Hundred Fifty Thousand and 00/100th Dollars ($750,000.00). The UNL Rent shall be increased for inflation on an annual basis beginning September 1, 2014 and in each succeeding year utilizing the CPI-U, or a successor index that most closely approximates the CIP-U as agreed to by the Parties, over the last 12 months before seasonal adjustment as reported for the month the adjustment is made by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (or its successor). The UNL Rent shall be payable in one installment following the Basketball Season but not later than May 15 of each year of the Agreement Term.

Credit Against UNL Rent

UNL shall be entitled to take as a credit against UNL Rent an annual amount equal to: all turnback sales tax receipts the City receives from the sale of basketball tickets for Home Games (includes 70% of the state sales tax) pursuant to the Convention Center Facility Financing Assistance Act (Neb. Rev. Stat. §§13-2601 to 13-2612); the first dollar of all City imposed ticket surcharges on basketball tickets sold for Home Games during each Basketball Season; and a make-whole provision for lost Concessions revenues in an amount of $300,000 which shall first be applied as a credit toward UNL Rent and then to other Athletics Home Game expenses. The City agrees to renegotiate the make-whole provision for concessions in the event UNL eliminates or modifies its restrictions on the sale of alcohol at Home Games and other UNL events held in the Arena. The concessions make whole annual amount shall be increased for inflation on an annual basis beginning September 1, 2014 and in each succeeding year utilizing the CPI-U over the last 12 months before seasonal adjustment as reported for the month the adjustment is made by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (or its successor).

Essentially, the University pays 750k per year for rent on the arena.  But, they get a $300k credit from the city from concessions sales which can be renegotiated if the University decides to allow beer sales.

It wouldn't exactly be a license to print money for the UNL AD if they allow beer sales, but it would probably mean an increase in the make-whole credit they receive from the city.

I hate to say it, but I think there would be several significant advantages to selling beer at basketball games:

1.  Attendance -- goes up.

2.  Revenue -- for the arena goes way up.

3.  Environment -- in terms of the crowd being into it improves.  Probably a lot.

DUIs probably won't be significantly more likely.  Students are going to be hitting up WC's or the Zoo bar walking home anyway.  Everyone else is going to be hanging out at the Mellow Mushroom waiting for the parking garages to clear out or walking over to Matt Davison's new bar.  Or Barry's.  Lots of options in the Haymarket now compared to what existed before.

Norm I hate to break it to you but WCs has been closed for several years.

Man, I'm old!

No more penny pitchers on Wednesdays?  BOOO!!!!!!

Do students even go to the Zoo Bar?  I'm not far removed from college, only 3 years, and I never once went to the Zoo Bar.  And Gate 25 sucks.  I will never support a bar Matt Davison owns.  The guy is an a$$ and a d-bag.

No I don't think students have ever gone to the Zoo Bar, it's more of a 40's and 50's crowd I think.

I think there are like 20 people who "own" Gate 25, it's not like he runs the place.  I think the food is actually pretty good.
