I think Coach Miles was much happier with today's game and effort.  I thought a few players grew a bit today.  Specifically Tai.  We moved the ball better today and seemed to be a better "team" if that makes sense.

-Our defense looked better in zone. I hope we stick with it.

-We looked better with Walter and Smith on the floor together.

-We rebounded better.

-Did a little better with fouls.

Still a work in process, but getting better.

Glad we got a win out of SC.

-Tai is going to be a damn good player. The question stands: was it his coming of the bench that made him more comfortable? Should we keep him coming off the bench?

-Petteway went 3-10 from the field. Still taking a lot of bad shots unnecessarily (Biggs did too, a couple times) , though I think he grew up a little bit for the second half. Still going to be an issue going forward.

-Great work on the FT line (22-27). That stat line might be the difference, seeing as how UGA went 16-30.

-I see a lot of promise for this team. Errors that were evident that past few days seem to me to be rather fixable errors.

I think the day off did Nebraska a lot of good - coaches were able to have a normal practice Saturday & correct some things. With a young team, trying to make corrections in a 24-hour period and without the ability to have a normal practice between games Thursday & Friday probably played a role in NU making many of the same mistakes in the first two games.

Good sign going forward that they were able to fix some things in the span of one practice.

UMass up 6 over Clemson, about 3 minutes to play

UMASS will not be a bad loss.  They are a Top 25 team after the weekend they had.  UAB will be a decent team, but the suckie thing is we could of beat them both.  I guess it sucks to see that we were right there with both of them.  On the bright side, we could of very well been 6-0 heading back to Lincoln.  I think that we can look at that, and see that we will win some games this year.  We get some things fixed, and ya never know what will happen.  These early season tournies are usually learning times for teams and players.  I think we learned a lot.

I think we will be fine.  I think once we get some things fixed, this team will be capeable of compeating in the Big 10.  Will we finish in the top half?  No, probably not, and I do not expect us to.  Will we compeat for 8th, 9th, and 10th?  We very well could.  Who knows what could happen when this team gets it figured out.  Going to be a fun ride along the way.

Also want to say congrats to Tai for a nice showing off the bench, and Smith, who I feel was undervalued and does a little of the dirty work that not everyone sees.  He is usually cleaning the glass when he is in there.

Overall, its early, and to say this team is not very good is jumping the gun a bit.  We I do not think have seen this teams full potential, and that will be there as the season progresses.  Lets see how things change up when we get to our next 2 game stretch with Miami and Creighton.  I expect to see improvement.

UMass finishes it off, 62-56. Pretty crazy to think that as much as we struggled with a variety of things Thursday that we were a missed 3-footer from being within 1 point in the final minute against them ... not to mention the charge against Biggs a bit earlier than that.

That's a very nice UMass team, although their fans would probably like it if they could stop letting teams rally against them and make the last few minutes nerve-wracking.  ;)

I didn't get to see all of the game. What is wrong with shields?

Why did Parker start and only play 9 minutes?

Do not think anything is wrong with Shields is there?

I think the Parker situation was to send a message... and I think the message was received.

Shields was 2-8 today and 4-12 last game. That is petteway bad. :P Was wondering if anyone could shed some light on his poor shooting.

Guys have bad shooting nights and they're magnified the more they shoot.

Let me try and pull a little from memory

  • Benny pulled the start but didn't end up doing a ton with it.  He played 7 minutes in the first half and had two fouls.  Unless I'm mis-remembering, he took the ball into the defense ala Deverell Biggs and had his shot completely swallowed.  He didn't come back in the last 18 minutes of the game
  • The play of Tai Webster was probably the reason for no more Benny.  He absolutely turned it on in the second half on offense including knocking down his first 3 pointer of the game.  It's going to be just like Shavon last year...moments of brilliance and moments looking lost
  • I know Pitchford played well on the offensive end in the second half and I think did alright on defense as well.  He actually posted a guy up this game!  He did have a couple of head-scratching shots where you could tell he was trying too hard.
  • I'm still amazed by Leslie Smith's offensive game inside.  Can he play 30+ minutes?  If the answer is no, would you rather have him at the beginning or the end of games?  I think you can GATA some minutes to start so my answer is the end.  BTW, he had 7 rebounds in the second half.
  • Shavon didn't have his mid-range game this tournament so he really struggled.  At one point in the second half Petteway found him for a dunk attempt and then Shavon found Petteway for an easy basket.  Having two guys who can move with or without the ball like that playing together for the next three years is going to be fun to watch.
  • Petteway led the team in shots the first half...but also led in FT attempts and rebounds.  He played the entire 2nd half and took 3 shots.  I don't think you'll ever stop him from jacking up infuriating shots but I don't think he's going to turn into Toney McCray when it's all said and done.
  • Ray didn't play a ton of minutes the 2nd half but really kept us in the game with some huge 3s in the first half...after he missed his first couple of shots.  Hopefully his injury isn't very serious because there will be nights where we need Ray to come in and start shooting
  • Rivers and Biggs played in the first half but weren't needed in the second half...I think they had some positive plays but I honestly don't remember anything they did other than a Rivers block
  • Petteway, Shields, Pitchford, and Webster all played 16+ minutes in the second half and Leslie played 13.

Overall...the UAB game was the thorn in the side to me for this tournament.  Our defense is that game was just flat out bad and disappointing.  I thought our team played better defense yesterday.  Not great yet, but better.  Offensively I thought we had some good flow yesterday and guys looking for each other more which was refreshing.  The UMASS game had no flow, but that's a very good UMASS team.  Its just too bad we didn't find a way to get that game.  Had we won that game I think we go 2-1 at worst.  Or its too bad we weren't on the other side of the bracket.  I think we also go 2-1 if we were.

I'm guessing this tourney was great for Miles and staff to really evaluate some things.  I saw a LOT of very promising things and a LOT of things we need to work on.  We are young.....so as so many of us have said, we will look pretty damn good at times and pretty damn bad at times.  The more this team learns to play together the better we will be.  I still really believe this team will do pretty well this year.  I know the B10 is going to be tough, but I think we will continue to only get better.  We still have to remember we have a lot of new pieces this year.  What is so promising (for me at least) is that we have way more offensive weapons.  We don't tend to go on long droughts like we used too.  I think defensive things are very correctable.  I would love to see us continue to switch ball screens out top the way we did yesterday.  Use our length to give teams fits.  We also need to get better at defending ball screen pick and rolls.  We don't rotate very well right now.  Again, very correctable.  I'm happy NU has a week off this week to work on some things.  I know they may not have practice on Thursday and possibly Friday, but this gives plenty of time for our guys to rest their legs, get Gallegos fresh, let Smith rest those knees, and hopefully get better heading into next Saturday's game vs Northern Illinois.  Then we will have to play very well to beat Miami.  I know Miami not great right now, but they will still be a very good test for this young team.
