Don't see the point in bringin up Iowa.

Fran has done a good job there.

Miles has done an amazing job here thus far.   Comparisons aren't needed to build one up and devalue what the other has done.

It's easy to see both have done a good job in their time thus far.

And as far as Iowa goes....they should be in the dance.

I'm having a hard time saying Iowa is worthy of a bid.  Lucky for them this is a down year for college bball.  With that said....just goes to show if we can soon get to that middle of the pack tier of the Big 10 we will be talking about the dance instead of hoping we make the NIT.

20+ wins, .500 conference record in the toughest conference in America, basically a 10th conference win now after yesterday.

That's enough for me.   Just because some other teams played higher rated patsies than what Iowa did, shouldn't outweigh what they did in the toughest conference in America.

OOC SOS was 308.....with an RPI of 71.  Not exactly great numbers.  I think they get in to the dance because of that 9-9 conference record...but who really did they beat?  They beat Wisconsin at home.  Thats a good win.  They beat Illinois at home....ill give them thats a good win.  Next best win in conference.....Minnesota?  But thats really what Nebraska needs to do here soon...we need to beat him on the lower tier teams...win some against the middle of the pack...and then hope to pull off a few upsets in between.

They beat Iowa State in the non-con.  Quality win.  That's about on par with most other bubble teams.  They have 1 quality OOC win.  The big difference is others patsies are rated in the 150-200 range versus Iowa's in the 250-300 range.   Iowa's conference slate outweighs that....or should.   Wisconsin, Illinois and MInnesota will all be dancing soon...quality wins.

I can understand why someone would put Tennesse, Kentucky or Virginia in over Iowa.   LaSalle or MTSU or Baylor....please.

That's a pretty good point Norm. As much as we're celebrating the mircale that is this year, we could be cursing his name next year for not being able to turn water into Boone's Farm wine again.

And if we dig into the archives, most of us said the same thing about Doc after year three and his 2d NIT bid in 3 seasons.

The windows for Miles is not 6 years, really, it's more like 3. Same as Doc and Barry. If he doesn't have quality recruits in by that time, years 4-6 are most likely going to be just like Doc's. And voila, new coach. Even worse now with the facilities, since if you can't use them as a magnet your first 3 years, then magnet it will no longer be.

He has 2 classes to land the bedrock talent to advance. That's a lot of pressure.

I just doing see Iowa getting in.

They are 2-8 on the road (only wins are Northwestern and Penn St), their RPI is in the seventies, and they didn't even try to put together a competitive noncon schedule by inking 5 games against teams with RPis at or above 300.  On top of that they are only .500 in conference.

In recent years the committee has taken a pretty hard line against teams with abysmal noncons.  Colorado was snubbed a couple of years ago when everybody thought they should be in because of their winning conference record.  Same with Kansas St.

You just have to do more than go .500 in conference, even in the #1 conference.  Give me a road win or two against a good team, okay.  Give me two solid noncon wins, okay.  Give me a good RPI or SoS, okay.  Iowa's entire resume consists of the argument, "Hey we went .500 in conference."  I just have to think that when it comes to the committee sitting in that room they will reward someone else with a bid first.  (Note: I say that as someone that actually likes Iowa!)

B1G has an unbalanced schedule so not all conference records are equal. You play 7 teams twice and 4 teams once. The 4 teams Iowa only played once are 4 of the 7 tourney teams from the B1G. They got to play Purdue, Northwestern, Nebraska and Penn State twice each while avoiding 2nd matchups with Michigan, Michigan State, and Ohio State. They went 9-9 against that conference schedule.

KenPom has their non-con SOS ranked 337 out of 347. Pathetic. He also has then rated as the 30th best team nationally. I agree that I would put them in over most of the other bubble teams, but if they get left out, they only have themselves to blame for that awful noncon schedule and not being able to finish in all those close losses.

With that said, I dont really understand the OP. Iowa is going to be a really good squad next year. They get everyone back. Watch out.

Ah yes, the OP.  That was me.

And my point was we just beat Purdue in the Conference tourney and I felt like talking some sh!t.  :)

Tagging onto my OP, I just ran across this official tweet from Brian Rosenthal and, unfortunately, I don't know how to post the actual tweet so I'm just cutting and pasting what it said:

"Tim Miles' 14 victories is more than Crean, Painter, Beilein, Carmody, McCaffery & Chambers each had in first seasons at #B1G schools."

And, Brian, now it's 15.

All that matters is he runs an up tempo offense.........remember??  Nothing else matters!

Yeah, OK, so I did some digging.  Tempo.  That's measured in average number of possessions per game.  The NCAA keeps stats on this.  And they can rank-order all the teams in the nation based on this one stat.

Now, the range of possessions per game goes from a top number of 76.2 posted by Northwestern State to a low of 58.9 for Western Illinois.

The bulk of teams fall into the middle of the bell curve, right?  Simple statistics.  So, drop out the top 25% and the bottom 25% and you're left with what they call the inter-quartile range.

That interquartile range (the middle 50%) runs from Rhode Island at 66 possessions per game up to Drake at 70.1.  That's the middle 50%.  Low average to high average.

And where is Iowa?  They're in that average range -- 69.4 possessions per game.

Wow, them Hawkeye fans must have sore necks from turning back and forth so much.  <_<

Posted

Doc's last year here, we ranked 320th in the nation in tempo at 63.6 possessions per game.

Man, Gesell and his Iowa Hawkeyes getting a whopping 6 more possessions for every 40 minutes.  That's, y'know, a BIG deal.  <_<

(Six more possessions per game?  Really?  For that, he chose that gawdawful color of yellow?)

Iowa is 78th in the nation in adjusted tempo and tops in the B1G.

If he wanted a fast tempo and to not be booed every time hr visits Lincoln he should have went to the big 12

Never forget, Nebraska is cattle country. Home to the Sandhills and Ranchers. Iowa is hogs and pig farmers. They make movies about Ranchers, they're called" Westerns". They made a movie about pig farmers, it was called "Deliverence".

If Deliverance was a movie about pig farmers, that brings a whole new meaning to the term "animal husbandry"........
