PimpMario Posted March 15, 2013 Report Posted March 15, 2013 Miles couldn't find a point any time in the last 5 minutes to use a timeout. I don't understand this. He never calls time outs. Maybe he just doesn't like to call defenses or set plays or say "hey don't let Byrd shoot 3s." We tried to give this game away. We have to get better at running set plays. We have to have better situational awareness. When are we going to implement inbound plays? Quote
FredsSlacks Posted March 15, 2013 Report Posted March 15, 2013 My guess is he did not want to disrupt the flow of the game and mess up the way NU was playing. Quote
PimpMario Posted March 15, 2013 Author Report Posted March 15, 2013 My guess is he did not want to disrupt the flow of the game and mess up the way NU was playing. You mean by giving a way a big lead, letting Purdue hit key shots and missing lots of free throws? I am glad we won but we kinda chocked at the end. Miles just doesn't seem like a very "hands on" coach. And I have like that for the most part but at the end of a game, especially when things aren't going your way it might not hurt to call a timeout and you know, coach. Quote
tcp Posted March 15, 2013 Report Posted March 15, 2013 He's used them before to refuel the guys, and I suspect he probably only does it when he feels they're completely gassed in game and a breather would help. And sometimes you may not call them because you deny the other coach the time as well, and I figure if you're playing a superior team that's not all that motivated, maybe you don't want to keep giving them opportunities to rally in a huddle if you think your guys can handle the end. Given that we've seen him do it a few times before, I'm not sure there's an overriding philosophy at play here. I'm generally not one that believes you use them just to use them myself. One last thing: this game went to the wire because of missed free throws at the front end in the last couple of minutes. I'm not sure timeouts cure that problem. Quote
AuroranHusker Posted March 15, 2013 Report Posted March 15, 2013 My guess is Miles didn't want to call a timeout because Purdue was already out of timeouts. As in not rewarding the opponent for burning their own. Quote

And if he did and then the game was such that you would have wanted to call TOs after made baskets etc.at the end ...would you have been upset he had used them? Either way may be right...but this time his way won...so I won't complain. Quote
royalfan Posted March 15, 2013 Report Posted March 15, 2013 Miles uses timeouts well in my view. Quote
HB Posted March 15, 2013 Report Posted March 15, 2013 Sure glad we had one left in case we would have been trapped in the corner with 12 seconds left vs. getting fouled, or couldn't have gotten it in bounds. And why give Painter a chance to draw up a play to get a 3? Coaches in this league are unblievable in implementing plays during time outs. Yeah, they got one with 30- some seconds left--but Miles and Smith must have been doing something right since Purdue went 2-12 for the game from 3. Pimp Mario, I must say you're hyper-critical after this game. Quote

Miles is 6-0 this year in games decided by less than 5 points. Whatever he is doing has worked. HB 1 Quote
Norm Peterson Posted March 15, 2013 Report Posted March 15, 2013 There was no point in the last 5 minutes of the game where I could hear that little Dick Vitale voice in my head saying, "Miles better get a TO, baby." Quote
bball23 Posted March 15, 2013 Report Posted March 15, 2013 Most hit this on the head (IMO). Why let Painter get something set up when they had no timeouts with a YOUNG team. Let them try and go down in the heat of the moment and make a tough shot in a tough spot. Also, had we just hit FT's we win this game going away. Taking a timeout doesn't help that at all. Ubel missing the front end and then Byrd hitting the 3 was the biggest dagger. We had a chance to put the game away......but they won, we move on, life is good! Quote
Cookie Belcher Posted March 15, 2013 Report Posted March 15, 2013 I am a huge fan of not using timeouts. I actually think most coaches use timeouts too often. Miles might use less, but to me it is the right amount. Quote
Silverbacked1 Posted March 15, 2013 Report Posted March 15, 2013 Even Dockery(?) the color guy was saying that the Purdue players weren't talking to each other to set up the last play. Think that was a good idea to sit on the time outs. It all worked out. We lose and maybe we think different. Quote
Huskerpapa Posted March 15, 2013 Report Posted March 15, 2013 That is why the Coach gets the big money...it always easier to look through the rearview mirror and provide a clearer picture of what should have been done, it is much more difficult in the heat of the battle. I guess I didn't even realize the timeouts were not being leveraged until I read it here. Quote
