SIAP: When was the last time we had 2 consecutive games go to OT? Did we ever before win them both?

We beat Wiscy at home in OT a week ago. And then we beat Maryland in OT last night. Two consecutive home games. Two consecutive OT games. Two consecutive wins. Has that ever happened before in program history?

 

We are 3-1 in OT games this season. That's the best OT record I can remember.

Considering I quit my season tickets this year, I’m shocked they haven’t all been OT games.  Should’ve had more faith. 

Regarding your question, don’t recall consecutive OT games.

Not the question you asked, but we are 15-19 in the last 20 years. Here are the years with 3+ OT games:

 

2022-2023: 4 OT

2019-2020: 4 OT

2016-2017: 3 OT

2014-2015: 3 OT

2007-2008: 4 OT

Since I saw Keith Moody at the game yesterday, I’m reminded of my favorite OT game the ‘91 Thriller over Oklahoma in the Big Tournament. The final was something like 117-114.

Not sure if we ever won both.  I knew we had OT games under Iba.  79-80 season we had 3; 

 

UAB, in their first D1 season, we won in 4 OTs.  12-22-79.

Oklahoma State, we won the game 74-73. 1-23-80.

Kansas State, we lost, 64-66. 1-26-80.

 

I got lazy and did no more research.

This was the game that taught me one of my 1st sports lessons. ”It ain't over 'til it's over!" I was 10.  Quit watching it because I thought we were toast. Found out later we won... and I missed it.

I watched it in a South Omaha Bar after getting my first tattoo.

In 1986-87, his first season, Danny Nee went 4-0 in OT including winning the 3rd place NIT game in OT.  In that same year we won consecutive OT games, at Okie St in 2OT and at home in OT against Kansas

 

Harry Good, the first coach in school history with 3 OT wins, went 3-0 in 1949-50

Moe Iba went 3-0 in OT in 1983-84

Jerry Bush went 3-1 in OT in 1955-56

Joe Cipriano went 3-1 in OT in 1979-80 (Record for the most OTs in school history as we played 8OTs thanks to a 2OT and 4OT game)

No. However:

 

We've played 2 consecutive home OT games (they were consecutive games) in 1963-64. We lost to Kansas St and beat Oklahoma in 2OT.

In 55-56 we played consecutive OT games, winning against Oklahoma on the road and losing to Iowa St at home.

In 79-80 we played consecutive OT games twice.  We beat UAB in 4OT at home and Wisconsin in Hawaii.  Later we beat Okie St at home and lost to Kansas St in 2OT.

In 87-88 we played consecutive OT games, winning against Furman on the road and losing to Grambling St at home

I’m going to share my best tip and trick - practice it.  As the year goes on and you have the packages in you want, I always did more and more situational play. From an entire OT to 1 sec left. Every special situation play from any inbound point, to needing a 2 or a 3, being or not being in the bonus all needs multiple reps I always thought. 
 

So they never saw anything drawn up in a game, just reminded of what they had repped many times. It also allowed you to run stuff without a TO. 
 

You can’t duplicate the pressure but you can cause chaos. Give them a situation. Team down 4 with the ball and 30 seconds left. Offense scores and takes a TO. Me - “Technical foul. You’re out of time outs. If they say they didn’t know I would say you didn’t ask.  Team needs to foul to stop clock so player fouls - “that’s five, you’re out.” Didn’t know - should of asked. 
 

The hope was to get players thinking about the information they would need to be successful instead of the situation itself. It worked with some groups. I did have a team that would come in the huddle after regulation and the point would start talking beginning with number of time outs both teams had, whose in the bonus or double bonus, ask, “whose got fouls trouble?” And even a how about we do “A” if we have to get a bucket. That team saw 5 over times that year. 

 

I felt I had truly done my job that year when they showed they didn’t really need me any more. We had over come  a 19 point deficit with 2 minutes left with the ball but no timeouts left. Point made a call that basically meant nothing but a layup, at 1 minute switched into the closest thing we had to a delay and at 15 seconds he set up the last shot play they knew was just what we did in that situation. Got the shot we wanted and even a follow up but neither went. In the huddle before the start of OT they ran through all the things they needed to know with out me saying anything. At the first horn my point says to me, “A” has been good to us tonight, start with that? I just nodded and told them to keep doing what they’ve been doing and sent them out. 
 

I knew we were going to win that one because we were focused on the what’s and they couldn’t get past the situation of giving up a 19 point lead to have to play overtime. 
 

Good times. Did I mention that game was a conference tourney semi against our school’s biggest rival? Thanks @basketballjones for giving me a reason to stroll down memory lane. Those were the days.
