Win tonight and we'll start having legitimate NIT bubble conversations.

Huskers filled their last scholarship for 2013-14

I don't know why anyone would have a problem with this. Good for him!!! -
I hope your right Dimes but Northwestern just beat Purdue last night and Penn State has been very close in alot of games. I agree we are better than both those teams and should be able to go 4-0 against them but just won't be as easy as many people think. I think the next 3 games are all winnable games against Penn State, Minnesota and Indiana.

More Rivers, Biggs, and Parker... Less -
kldm64 replied to basketballjones's topic in The Haymarket Hardwood
I'd be interested to know what little things (no pun intended) that you think Parker does that doesn't show up on the stat sheet? He's not a great shooter, he can't be used to double team, he constantly gets beat off the dribble by the guy he is guarding, etc.... I'm not saying he doesn't put forth any effort as I know he's paying as hard as can but just curious what things you think he does that don't show up on the stat sheet? -
Lower level seat and Red One parking on ticket board

Is this ticket still available? what section number is it in? -
Adding Ubel would not gain us any more wins than we have now. I'd have to go with Pike as we are lacking a sharp shooter from behind the arc that can consistantly make it. Adding one player to this team would not make us a tournament team but it would certainly get us closer.

I feel that recruiting is going better than I expected. We have been getting official visits by some of the top recruits in the country. Something we haven't done for quite awhile. We only had 2 scholarships to give this year. We have a Rivals top 150 recruit who has signed in an area of need. The next step is to get the better players to sign. We haven't had any splashy visits in a while right? We had Robertson visit in October. He is ranked 51st on Rivals. Signed with LSU, however. I can't tell you the last time a player ranked that high chose one of his official visits to be Lincoln, Nebraska. I'm sure the new facilities played a role in his visit. Kenya Hunter played a role in his visit. Kenya Hunter played the only role for his visit. He didn't read on the internet that NU has great facilities and thought he'd come check them out. Kenya is the reason he was checking out NU. Facilites are great but it's the relationship with the coaches that determine where kids will sign. How do you think schools that aren't any better than NU get top 150 players to sign? It's not the facilites but rather the relationship they have made with the coach recruiting them. The facilites can be helpful to try and "wow" them once they get here but they don't even come unless a coach can get them on campus. -
This was the book on Parker last year and Benny responded. We'll see how this shakes out. I think that is still the book on Benny. I don't know what the deal is with Rivers but with the way Shavon is playing, I can't believe Rivers can't even get a look or any minutes to see if he can help out. If nothing else, he is 5 more fouls we can throw at someone. I will say this about Rivers is that he is still on the bench cheering his teammates on and giving the players high 5's as they come out of the game. When Terran missed the shot at the end of the Michigan game and was standing there dejected with his hands on his knees, Rivers was the first person to run over and console him. Whether he is getting minutes or not, that is a great teammate.

Lots of people on this board have been calling for Biggs to start ahead of Webster but how about Biggs start ahead of Gallegos. He just seems to disappear in games and only takes one shot the entire second half and it was not a good one. I like the backcourt of having Biggs and Webster in at the same time. This was a team we were better than and we still can't get a win. This season continues to get more frustrating with every game. Good teams find a way to win and bad teams find ways to lose. You aren't going to win many games with the scoring droughts we go on. Just riduculous. -

Benny > Tai at this point. They both can't play offense and Benny is better at defense Please tell me you are kidding??? Benny is not better than Tai or Biggs at either end of the floor. Parker got way to many minutes last night and it cost us.

I didn't think it was any better or worse than then one we used in the first part of the season. I wish they would show past game winning shots with Kent's call as the intro. They did that a few years ago and gave me chills each time hearing Pavelka yelling "GOT IT"

Speaking of students....when are they going to show up? I'm talking numbers. Obviously not calling out the ones who are showing up as that was already done. I know its break. But we supposedly sold out of the student tickets. Did they give the students too much of an allotment at too small a price? Such a bargain that some say, 'nah, I'll skip this game'? I know it has some to do with the product and what kind of product we've had the last several years. But we need numbers to show up. Will they keep showing up for these conference games if the losses keep piling up this season? How about free admission for the students? Show up with your N card and you get in. Instead of selling student season tickets just give free admission. Create some competition to get into the building and into the student section. Reward attendance from the previous year by 'reserving' a certain number of spots. Guaranteed admission to a certain number of students for the previous years attendance. You know, earn your spot. Freshman, work your way in. Reserve those guaranteed spots until 20 minutes before tip and if they're not there (they will be) those spots open up to the next people in line. The N cards all work off barcodes, right? I know that winning solves the issue of students showing up, but they have to guarantee that all of allotted student seating is filled. How do you expect students to show up who are on break? This game wasn't part of their season ticket package so any student who showed up had to pay extra for this ticket. There would have been a great student crowd if they were already back in school. I think the student section has been pretty good so far this year. Can't find a reason to be to harse with them when they don't even have a season ticket to attend this game.

Do you have a better option? Can't replace him with a guard so don't have many other choices. The biggest gripe people have with Pitchford is he's not a true post player. That is correct as he's much more of a outside player. If we had another true post player besides Smith, people wouldn't be so upset with him not playing a positon that he isn't comfortable at.
-
No, he just hasn't made much improvement in his overall game from last year to this year. I don't think that's what's going on. See my post above. I don't necessarily dis-agree with your points but my point is valid as well. Shavon needs to improve his overall game. My point with not seeing improvement has nothing to do with the amount of touches he is getting as opposed to what he does when he has the ball. Shavon needs to work on his midrange jump shot as opposed to always looking to drive to the hoop each time. He passes up wide open shots only to take a more difficult one. Teams who have scouted him well will play off of him knowing that, most the time, he will drive. The defender is better able to guard him because of this. Many times a sophomore slump is due to not expanding your game and teams now know how to defend you better. Shavon will be fine as he continues to gain experience. He is still a strong assest on this team.

That is pretty interesting. I have to agree as I expected Fuller to be a contributor this season but after watching him in the exibition game, I'm glad he redshirted as he looked lost and not ready for this level of play yet.
-
We are approaching the mid-way point in the season already so thought it would be interesting to see what everyone's thoughts are on evaluating where you think each player is right now as opposed to where you thought they would be: Tia Webster - struggling with mind games (a little behind what I expected) Deverell Biggs - loads of talent but needs to get his act together (behind what I expected) David Rivers - good luck figuring this one out Benny Parker - has improved over last year some (about where I expected him to be) Nathan Hawkins - injury hurt him to start season (a little better than I expected him to be) Terran Petteway - tremendous upside when he plays under control (better than expected) Trevor Menke - mop up duty player Mike Peltz - mop up duty player Sergej Vucetic - don't see a future with any minutes at NU Ray Gallegos - expected more from Ray so far (behind where I expected him to be) Leslee Smith - solid and consistant (better than I expected him to be) Nick Fuller - redshirting and with good reason Shavon Shields - pretty consistant but still lacking confidence in outside shot (behind where I expected) Walter Pitchford - not a post player but good outside shooter (about where I expected him to be) Kye Kurkowski - mop up duty player

Well considering Parker, Shields, and Pitchford all played terrible, it's amazing we didn't get blown out more. All we did on offense is look for Gallegos and Petteway and luckily they had decent games. We've also got to find a way to get to the free throw line more. We will lose alot of games if we can't get to the line. Nice to see Webster was a little more aggressive on offensive end today but still making some freshman mistakes as expected. We cut the lead down to 3 with under 10 minutes left and then got rolled after that. Disappointing the we couldn't put up more of fight down the stretch. -
The kid is from Omaha, recruited from Nebraska, and went to Louisville. I don't understand anyone's rational who thinks he would want to come back when he already had the chance to be here. Maybe because he realized the grass isn't alway greener and wants to go to a place where he can get minutes on the floor instead of the bench. People do change their mind and realized they may have made a mistake in their orignal decision (like we all have). I don't think he will transfer but my point was not that he wouldn't want to come back here but to the people who don't think he is not good enough to be here due to his lack of offensive skills.
-
This does hurt tomorrow but Biggs needs to get his act together as now he will have missed 1/4 of the season due to disciplinary actions. Not good!!!

The kid was a 4 star player, recruited by Louisville, and from Omaha......I don't understand anyone's rationale who thinks we wouldn't want this kid.
