DEFENSE: C+
I didn't think Nebraska was that bad defensively in holding CU to 64 points and 46% from the field; I just thought Creighton was that good offensively, namely All-American Doug McDermott (10-19, 27 points). McDermott is the catalyst for the entire offense and while Nebraska broke down several times off of double teams, the worst thing was leaving Ethan Wragge WIDE OPEN for trey's.
The Huskers played okay defensively.
REBOUNDING: D
40 to 34, NU loses, but even worse, they allow 10 offensive boards, including FOUR off of missed free throws. You just can't do that!
Creighton has better athletes down low, but NU's strength is its experienced starting front court, so the rebounding wasn't acceptable.
BALL HANDLING: D+
I have no idea how NU only had 13 turnovers - didn't it seem much worse?
Namely in the first half, sloppy turnovers KILLED NU when the game was close. They were holding CU to virtually no scoring the first ten minutes but couldn't even get a lead, mainly because of the fact that they couldn't handle the basketball.
I don't remember seeing a ball just thrown out of bounds (as Ray Gallegos did in the early going) in a long, long time.
COACHING: B
What more could Miles have done tonight? His young players played like they were young; his old players played like they normally will (neutralized or overmatched against superior teams) and he had three zebras against him.
Did the latter point matter? No. Maybe we lose by 16 instead of 22.
The better team won, in all facets, and virtually none of that (in year one) is the fault of our coach.
OVERALL GRADE: D+
Had Nebraska played a "B+" or "A" level game, they could beat Creighton one out of five times and keep it within 10 the other four.
However, neither happened and what's even more scary is the fact that Creighton probably only played a "B-" level game.
Have a good week studying for finals, boys, and we look forward to starting clean at Oregon!
