    12/06/2012 - Creighton Report Card

      Ubel shooting vs Creighton

      OFFENSE: F

17, 25 and 42 just aren't going to get it done - those being the points scored respectively in each half and the game. Neither are 32% from the field, 25% from downtown and only 6 free throw attempts.

Even worse was the fact that Nebraska couldn't get the shot it wanted for a good majority of the game, instead throwing up long three's and again, showing no ability to get to the rim and finish (or at least get to the line).

Give Creighton a TON of credit tonight, though honestly, Nebraska also missed a lot of shots it normally makes (see Ubel, Brandon).

Player of the Game is tough tonight - I'll give it to Ubel, who found a way to stay out of foul trouble, convert on almost half of his shots (5-11) and pull down a team high eight boards.

    DEFENSE: C+

I didn't think Nebraska was that bad defensively in holding CU to 64 points and 46% from the field; I just thought Creighton was that good offensively, namely All-American Doug McDermott (10-19, 27 points). McDermott is the catalyst for the entire offense and while Nebraska broke down several times off of double teams, the worst thing was leaving Ethan Wragge WIDE OPEN for trey's.

    The Huskers played okay defensively.

    REBOUNDING: D

40 to 34, NU loses, but even worse, they allow 10 offensive boards, including FOUR off of missed free throws. You just can't do that!

Creighton has better athletes down low, but NU's strength is its experienced starting front court, so the rebounding wasn't acceptable.

    BALL HANDLING: D+

I have no idea how NU only had 13 turnovers - didn't it seem much worse?

Namely in the first half, sloppy turnovers KILLED NU when the game was close. They were holding CU to virtually no scoring the first ten minutes but couldn't even get a lead, mainly because of the fact that they couldn't handle the basketball.

I don't remember seeing a ball just thrown out of bounds (as Ray Gallegos did in the early going) in a long, long time.

    COACHING: B

What more could Miles have done tonight? His young players played like they were young; his old players played like they normally will (neutralized or overmatched against superior teams) and he had three zebras against him.

Did the latter point matter? No. Maybe we lose by 16 instead of 22.

The better team won, in all facets, and virtually none of that (in year one) is the fault of our coach.

    OVERALL GRADE: D+

Had Nebraska played a "B+" or "A" level game, they could beat Creighton one out of five times and keep it within 10 the other four.

However, neither happened and what's even more scary is the fact that Creighton probably only played a "B-" level game.

Have a good week studying for finals, boys, and we look forward to starting clean at Oregon!

PLAYER OF THE GAME: BRANDON UBEL

2012-2013 PLAYER OF THE GAME TOTALS:

    RAY GALLEGOS - 4

    DYLAN TALLEY - 2

    BRANDON UBEL - 2

Only place I'd disagree is on defense. Yes, they left Wragge open a couple times but to hold them to 64 points was solid work. We got sloppy at the end after the game was decided but otherwise I thought it was a B to B+ effort on defense.

I didn't think the rebounding was that bad considering how many shots we missed. Could we have done a better job? Yes. But without changing anything that we did do on the boards, we could have simply made a few more shots and that would've swung the rebound total in our favor.

Forgot to add that I also HATE CREIGHTON and all of their a-hole fans. The couple that aren't a-holes I don't hate, as much.

I consider K-State fans to be the worst. Anyone remember the game where they beat us pretty badly a couple of years ago and they all started streaming down into the A section to heckle the crowd? I mean they're about the biggest a-hole group of fans that have shown up at the BOB in the last several years.

These Creighton guys....eh. You'll never convert Creighton's hardcore fans to be Nebraska fans and vice versa....no biggie there. If Miles can build this up in the next couple of years like we all hope he can you'll flip their bandwagon fanbase into becoming our bandwagon fanbase.

If the Husker women can sell out the Deveany when winning you won't have to worry about getting invaded on our home court if we really start winning.

The problem is that, as it stands now, football donations can help you get better seats for basketball. And, as we saw a few years ago when the football team was introduced during the Creighton game and everyone in blue got up and cheered like nutcases too, Creighton basketball fans are, in many cases, Husker football fans. With season tickets. In good seats. So when we play them, it's not like we're being invaded like we saw against KSU or Iowa State...it's just people using their season tickets and wearing blue.

Hopefully the new donation structure at the PBA fixes that...

Ladyhusker, I suspected as much. I figured there had to be a reason the guys in blue got such good seats. And seats that are often otherwise unoccupied. It occurred to me last night that some of those dudes probably buy season tickets for basketball (along with their football tickets) just for the game against Creighton every other year. And maybe some of the conference stuff. Which explains why a lot of close seats are empty a lot of the time.

    Good point.
