Frustrated by this season and not seeing enough "impact" improvement as the season has progressed. In fact, in some cases, I think I can safely say there has been some regression. I hate talking about "next year" but that is where we are, once again.

7 assists? What happened to the team early in the year that was moving, sharing the basketball and knocking down open looks? This team hasn't shot particularly well in the past few games and I believe it starts with too much standing & too much dribbling. We are 1-4 in the last 5 games and the most assists in a game we've had in that stretch is 12. (Purdue had 22 last night!).

Defensively, we simply can't or won't make life difficult on 3 pt shooters. I realize we are undersized and that is a contributing factor when having to double the post and then recover on the shooters. But...the effort to recover is a requirement for this team to be successful. It has not been there.

Thank you to both Shavon and Benny for giving this program 4 years of your life. Kudos also to the fans - pretty impressive that over 15,000 showed up to congratulate the seniors and cheer on a sub-.500 team.

Next year...ah next year...

Still not quite sure what our offensive identity is.......hero ball?  Defensively.....GATA has gone out the window.

I think you'll see next year a lot more what Miles wants us to be offensively.   You won't have as many black holes or liabilities next year.   A deeper more complete roster.

You've seen bits and pieces already this year. Somehow this is still the most efficient offense we've run in over a decade, essentially because Andrew White is on the team.

And even when Shields was out...you saw some pretty good ball movement.   Shields has some terrific games but sometimes it does come at the expense of ball movement and the rest of the team

Per the OWH..the last time we lost more league home games than we did this year was in the 1922-1923 season.  And we were in the Mo Valley.

With all due respect, what sort of shit stat is this?

The last time we lost as many home conference games as this (6) was in 2010 where we played seven home games instead of 8.  That's just coming up with the year 2010, not finding it has enough gravitas, and looking further back.

Unless we get a couple of big men, we will have the same problems we had this year of being totally overmatched down low.  We will also need to replace Shields who has been the only consistent scorer the past two games.  I just do not understand why we have been unable to get at least one big man.  In the big 10, it is impossible to win unless you have at least two.  I hope there is more effort given to this need.  I am sure there are junior college big men and yet we don't seem to be too interested in going that route.

Morrow, Jacobsen, and Hammond are undersized not only in height but in muscle to compete at the five and I do not see that changing so lets look high and low for two post players that could make us much better for next year.

Barfy & Shatel probably had a good chuckle during that PU run. It's simply LeeBo getting clicks with that kind of "sound byte" material. Nothing more, nothing less. Not terribly surprising after that 30-9 burst to start the game.

I would have to go back and watch the tapes but we averaged around 10 assist per game in Shields absence.  Just a few assist under our average on the year....10 assist puts us at the bottom of the NCAA in terms of assist per game.  I don't expect much to change next year because 1. This is what Miles ball has been since he stepped foot on campus and 2. From what I understand Gill is a gunner and will likely be taking over Shields role in terms of getting shots up.

I think Lee did some Cherry picking to further his agenda.

I think we have to change a bunch of things we do if we do not land at least one big.  I would hope we would run and press more if we have a bunch of 6'5" to 6'8" players.  Force people to play our way instead of the other way round.  Don't see it but might be what we have to do.

Sad part is NU tried that last night and it failed miserably against PU.

We lost 6 conference home games in 2009-10 too.

Yeah...Lee decided to go with MORE than six games for some reason.....My guess is we have probably lost 6 conference home games quite a few times from 1922 to present day.

Exactly.

Same narrative for Husker football prior to the bowl game as it was 57 years ago that NU lost more than 7 games.

I was referring more towards Petteway last year with that.   But I do think there are times that the offense stagnates with Shavon.   He's been great the last two games.   But he had some pretty bad games early on in conference play as well

For as much as we are hurting for a big man, it's ironic that we want our biggest guy to transfer out of the program.

Yeah, I don't get this at all. He's gone from no minutes to some important minutes and for the next 2 years his absolute floor is post player who can contribute minutes off the bench.

Pry because it shouldn't be that inconceivable for us to find better.  Especially with our track record of bringing in transfers under Miles.

Inconceivable? No. Probable? What exactly have we been waiting for over the last 3 years?

Exactly Dimes!  Anyone that thinks we would be better without Hammond next year needs to think again.  If you look at the big men that are left out there to recruit for next year the pickings are pretty slim.  Hopefully we land Jordy and find a grad transfer but expecting massive improvement out of the 5 next year with players not currently in the program is bordering on silly.

Hammond improved from last year to this year.  At times he was decent and held his own.  Assume he improves the same amount between now and next year and he will be a serviceable big man and at a minimum provide depth.  Then by the time he's a senior he will be a solid contributor.  Big guys take time to develop and I'm not ready to give up on Hammond and hope that we can find someone better this late in the game when the last three years has shown our ability to land big guys is questionable at best.  It would be kind of like quitting my job today because I bought a lottery ticket and am feeling good about bucking the long odds and winning tonight!

Posted

We're not going to sign Karl Anthony-Towns but I still think it's a bit misguided to assume we can't find someone better than Hammond.   He's poor.  Not meant to be a knock.  Just reality.   Sure he improved this year over last.   But considering what the original basis was...that's not exactly a tough feat to accomplish.  Let's revisit for a second.  He's in his second year in the program and at 6'11" was beat out by two true freshmen who had injuries issues in the preseason and stood all of 6'7" and 6'8" and who aren't your prototypical 5 men.   You'll understand if I'm skeptical.  I'll give you that I'd rather have Hammond stick around than Fuller.

We haven't won more road conference games this century than 2015-16. Boys, I'm getting really close to cherry-picking us into the NCAA tournament conversation here.

Unfortunately here is another sobering stat. The largest margin of defeat in PBA history happened to fall on Senior night. I realize this is a tired rant, but the article Lee B. wrote last week about the lack of size on this roster was spot on. While Miles has improved the overall talent level, the lack of a big man is glaring.Like the old saying goes, you can't teach height.

No, it didn't; Iowa beat NU last season 74-46. And it was worse than the score indicated. That is sobering....

The Big Ten Network fudged that one up.......Miles got his arse handed to him by Iowa last year at the PBA.

Find a big man and things change dramatically next year. Not to trash him on senior night...but we are instantly better the minute Parker's eligibiity expires.

Shields is an all timer but I do think he's replaceable. For as good as he's been the last two games, he's had some poor games in conference as well. Another year of experience for Watson and the others and Gill and Roby coming in can offset Shields IMO.

In a perfect situation for me...Fuller and Hammond move on... we get a 5th year or JUCO transfer big, Jordy T and a shooter for next year.

I don't mind if Hammond stays. He's still a work in project but I think if he stayed it would pay off by his senior year for us. Fuller will be buried on the bench behind White, McVeigh, and Roby more than likely but he won't transfer bc he has already used a redshirt so unless he transferred to D2 he would lose a year of eligibility.

I think Hammond and Bakari are the two most likely players to transfer this off season. However that's just my opinion and I have no evidence to support it.

Big, gutty senior performance from Shields tonight.

White isn't right and I'm not sure we're going to win another game without him. He's made 9 shots in the last 3 games.

Tai took and missed a lot of shots tonight. Benny hit his first and that was it.

Ed Morrow had some UPs tonight...looked as springy as I've seen him all year. With a summer in the weight room and a maybe a jumper he's going to be a load next year.

Jacobson will not miss AJ Hammons or even Purdue. Hammond was lost in the shuffle tonight.

Fuller and that block was huge for us to get back in it during the first. I wish he could shoot.

Where is Jack McVeigh?  2 games ago he's keeping us in the Ohio St game. Tonight it's 4 minutes and 0 shots. Why?

When Watson makes that rhythm jumper, it's a thing of beauty. 3-6 and you probably remember all 3 of those makes.  2 assists and 0 turnovers along with a couple of those phantom fouls that kept him out of the game. Probably needed to say F-it a little sooner and just run the offense entirely through him.

Just way too many easy baskets and open looks tonight. Still a chance to keep out of the play-in game on Sunday vs Northwestern

McVeigh and Miles had a long and spirited discussion during a media timeout.  They seemed to be arguing for almost the entire timeout.  Never saw McVeigh again after that

Between Fuller, Evelyn, and Hammond I expect 1 or 2 of them to transfer. We shall see ...

Benny is a heart guy and Shavon is a do it all ... they will be tough to replace, but I'm not sure we'll miss them quite as much as many think. It's kind of the dawning of a new era. We have a tendency to watch Shavon on offense and that was the case the two years prior with Petteway. Maybe it's this "motion" offense of Miles's? I know we don't really have any other creators, but it felt like we were moving the ball more quickly earlier in the year ... things do tend to bog down in conference, but we kind of lost our mojo on movement as well.

We obviously need one big man ... it would be nice to get a combo power forward/center type guy too. A Leslee Smith like body type would be alright. We could use another guard with handles as well.

I like the fight and heart I see from this team and we've definitely upgraded the talent since Miles first came, but some improvements are going to be needed next year in terms of results W-L wise. All that being said, we finished about how I thought we would coming into the year record-wise and the young/new guys have shown flashes. I think it's just the losses down the stretch that have me feeling a bit down.

Hopefully we can hang onto everyone we want to hang onto as well. Someone like a Tarin Smith would've been nice to still have :(
