FredsSlacks Posted January 4, 2013 Report Posted January 4, 2013 Another JUCO big we are showing interest in. Miles recruited him at CSU when he was in high school. USC was his best offer in high school. High school http://rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/basketball/recruiting/player-Leslee-Smith-103115 JUCO http://rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/basketball/recruiting/player-Leslee-Smith-144984 He averaged 3.8 pts and 3.4 boards as a freshman at SMU in 15.1 min. This kid seems like a safety net in my opinion in case nothing else works out. It does not say he has any offers right now on rivals. Quote
TheKamdyMan Posted January 4, 2013 Report Posted January 4, 2013 I would assume the same. Its the same juco as Deverell Biggs so that could be a reason for keeping the connections open. Quote
Norm Peterson Posted January 4, 2013 Report Posted January 4, 2013 He averages 8 and 6 for Seward County? Meh. I'll pass. Quote
Huskerpapa Posted January 5, 2013 Report Posted January 5, 2013 He is a big dude. I wonder how athletic he is? Quote
Huskerpapa Posted January 5, 2013 Report Posted January 5, 2013 Larry Brown's not so subtle take on Mr. Smith... http://collegebasketball.ap.org/tulsaworld/article/brown-tells-some-smu-players-they-wont-be-team Here is what one former player was allegedly told: Starting point guard Jeremiah Samarrippas told the school's student newspaper that Brown basically told him that he "wasn't good enough to play for him.'" Quote
hskr4life Posted January 5, 2013 Report Posted January 5, 2013 I do realize that JUCO ball is very good, espicially in the KJCCC, but those stats do not scream WOW to me... Quote
hskr4life Posted January 12, 2013 Report Posted January 12, 2013 Anyone who wants to catch Leslee tonight, and does not want to drive practically to Oklahoma, can head on down to Concordia KS tonight and watch him. Men tip off at 8 PM. Quote
hskr4life Posted January 15, 2013 Report Posted January 15, 2013 Here is a link to the stats for this game. I mean Leslee started the game on the bench, and had 8 points in the 13 mins he played. http://stats.njcaa.org/sports/mbkb/2012-13/div1/boxscores/20130112_ng2o.xml Quote
uneblinstu Posted March 10, 2013 Report Posted March 10, 2013 Looks like Coach Miles paid him a visit. http://sports.omaha.com/2013/03/09/husker-coach-eyeballs-recruit/ Quote
ajb5856 Posted March 10, 2013 Report Posted March 10, 2013 Is this solely a safety net or is Coach Miles legitimately worried that Atewe goes elsewhere? To me, if Miles feels good about Atewe ending up here, he isn't wasting his time checking out JUCO guys that would just be extra bodies. This doesn't seem like a guy Miles uses scholarship number 5 for next year on if we do get Atewe. Quote
Norm Peterson Posted March 10, 2013 Report Posted March 10, 2013 This seems odd, especially after we told Thomas we weren't interested. Quote
TheKamdyMan Posted March 10, 2013 Report Posted March 10, 2013 This seems odd, especially after we told Thomas we weren't interested. Smith does have more size to him than Thomas. Still see it as a safety net as well as a chance to see a couple other guys they have as they are currently 25-7. Quote
uneblinstu Posted March 10, 2013 Report Posted March 10, 2013 He leads the team in rebounds and is second in blocked shots. And frankly, that's what we'd be looking for next year, doesn't need to be a huge offensive threat. Even if we do bring in Atewe, it'd be nice if he and Pitchford weren't our only post players. Quote

Miles isn't bringing in Atewe (if he comes) plus a marginal JUCO player. He's not wasting scholarship #5 for 2013 unless its an impact player (and there's not many of those left in this class) or a senior transfer. At this point Miles isn't going to leave himself only 1 scholarship for te 2014 class. Quote
uneblinstu Posted March 10, 2013 Report Posted March 10, 2013 Probably true, but I'm not entirely convinced of that, especially if we have some roster turnover (which I hope doesn't happen). Quote
HuskerCager Posted March 10, 2013 Report Posted March 10, 2013 Seems to me we have to sign better players than this. This guy seems to have a past injury problem with an ACL. On one hand, you could say that is a hidden blessing in that this might be why his SMU numbers were so low. On the other hand, it's clearly a risk in that maybe he's prone to a repeat injury.Personally, I would rather we leave an open scholarship for next year (regardless of whether we sign Atewe or not). Don't settle, coach! Your two predecessors have already proven that doesn't work with their lack of program success. Quote
Huskerpapa Posted March 10, 2013 Report Posted March 10, 2013 Sounds like we have a real interest in both Smith and Atewe. Depth is a concern @ the four and five and these two add that depth. I am pretty convinced that neither of these two are difference makers, yet if they play strong roles, I am okay with the twosome. The fact that Coach Miles recruited Smith while at Colorado State, tells me that he has a strong sense of Smith and his background. We have brought in our share of four and five star athletes, we have only tied down Webster. Hopefully that will soon change. Quote
FredsSlacks Posted March 10, 2013 Author Report Posted March 10, 2013 Miles also visited kevin thomas, and 2 days later we found out we were no longer interested. I don't think visiting a kid that plays 2 hours away from NU means that we are going to offer him. Quote

Norm Peterson Posted March 11, 2013 Report Posted March 11, 2013 What we need is a talent upgrade and not just bodies to fill a position. I don't know which this guy would be, but if we offer, I sure hope it's the former and not the latter. And can we please just call him "Les"? captain 1 Quote

FredsSlacks Posted March 26, 2013 Author Report Posted March 26, 2013 https://twitter.com/RobinWashut/status/316387874692014080 is he walking on? Don't see much of a reason to offer him when he has no d1 offers. Quote
Nebrasketballer Posted March 26, 2013 Report Posted March 26, 2013 I wonder if this means that Nebraska isn't sitting well with either Atewe or Tummala. Or maybe someone currently on the team is leaving in order to make room for another scholarship. Also, does anyone know where there is video of him? Quote
