atskooc Posted October 16, 2015 Report Posted October 16, 2015 This sounds suspiciously like a stress fracture to me. If so, a redshirt year might be in the offing although I have absolutely no inside information and this is sheer speculation. At least his leg doesn't bend backwards. Huskerpapa Posted October 19, 2015 Report Posted October 19, 2015 I am hearing another week. Who knows for sure (outside of family and team). I am guess it isn't a stress fracture IF he gets back in this time frame. Quote
jimmykc Posted October 25, 2015 Report Posted October 25, 2015 Embedded in the story about Beckner in the LJS this morning was the fact that the coaches knew Jacobson would be out for an "extended" period of time in August. Why the shroud of secrecy about this injury? We are not talking about President Reagan or FDR here anyway. Just let fans know what he is dealing with and we are mature enough to understand the ramifications. Hopefully he will be back in action soon, but , if not, a medical redshirt possibility would figure in to future recruiting as well as this year's expectations. Quote
MandRHusker Posted October 25, 2015 Author Report Posted October 25, 2015 Didn't I read somewhere that the family was involved in determining the way Michael's injury would be communicated? Quote
jimmykc Posted October 25, 2015 Report Posted October 25, 2015 You read it here on HHC but, despite the strict rules regarding unauthorized release of medical information, I fail to see any reason for the family not to let coaches let fans know the diagnosis. If it is in question, then another opinion should be obtained and if it is not then the long silence just breeds speculation about more ominous possibilities. It appears from his photos that this is probably a simple problem which is just taking longer to heal than anticipated. Quote

His physical health is by no means your (or anyone's) business if he doesn't want it to be. Thanks for the lecture, dad. Does that also apply to other things like: Discipline? Starting lineups? Recruiting targets? Injury updates during the season? Because none of those things are "our business" if they don't want them to be. (And, yet, this is a discussion board ...) Quote
jimmykc Posted October 25, 2015 Report Posted October 25, 2015 No one is "entitled" to know anything about anyone else. The best method of avoiding unpleasant, and usually erroneous, information being disseminated on the internet is for the true facts to be presented and let people deal with them. Trying to hide the truth inevitably turns out to be worse. Whether this is a high ankle sprain, turf toe, or an ingrown toenail is none of our business but as fans we would like to know just because we care about how our team will fare this year, not because of some sort of perversion. Hopefully we will see Michael playing soon and this little tempest will go back into the teapot. HB 1 Quote

Does it apply to those things? Of course. Are we entitled to know which players are being disciplined and for what infractions? Not unless they've broken the law and it's public record. Are we entitled to know the starting lineups? Not until tipoff. Are we entitled to know our recruiting targets? Not until the kids sign the LOI (as the staff can't even mention kids' names until that point). Injury updates? Well, Jacobson is injured, and I don't think we're entitled to that specific information until he says we are. Is it nice to know these things? Sure it is. But to be upset because we don't know what his specific injury is? On what planet does that make sense? The fans knowing that information right now has no influence on how the season goes, does it? His injury certainly may influence the season, but that doesn't mean we need to know what it is right now. Shavon Shields may have knocked up his girlfriend over the summer (which could certainly affect the season), but that doesn't mean we are entitled to know that information until he wants us to know it. I am by no means suggesting this is the case; I'm just throwing out a hypothetical. So, speculate about his injury all you want, just don't be upset about not knowing what it is. It's not that hard, is it? Cell 1 Quote
Huskerpapa Posted October 26, 2015 Report Posted October 26, 2015 Is it the need to know, or the want to know. Of course we all WANT to know, we can also argue that we NEED to know...but in truth, we don't need to know; especially when it comes to specificity of the injury. If the family says don't tell anyone, then I am fine with respecting their wish. Quote
atskooc Posted October 26, 2015 Report Posted October 26, 2015 I've got no problem with wanting to know. But saying the fans should know is out of line. Should we have known about TP's mother's cancer before he told us? It was certainly affecting the team's performance. But I suspect none among us thought he should have told us earlier simply because we're fans of the team. Quote
jimmykc Posted October 26, 2015 Report Posted October 26, 2015 If everyone will take a slow, deep breath and reread my posts, I never said a word about either needing or being entitled to know anything about the injury. My point was that the facts about medical conditions eventually come out and it is simply better to lay them on the table when known to prevent unwarranted speculation. No one ever really wants personal information to be published for strangers to see but it does surface anyway. It was a random thought for gosh sake and we seem to be making it into a Cornhusker Watergate. Norm Peterson, HB and Red Don 3 Quote

jimmykc Posted October 26, 2015 Report Posted October 26, 2015 No, from the LJS piece this morning it seems the coaches knew the injury would disable him for an extended period. It has now been three months, which to me would qualify as an extended period. If the type of injury is still in question it is certainly time to get another medical opinion. I simply am having difficulty finding any value whatsoever in either the coaches or the family concealing information from the public after this long. I hope we all see Jacobson in uniform on Thursday, in which case this whole thread can be stamped MOOT. However it did help pass what would have otherwise been a somewhat boring Sunday unless one spent some time enjoying the beautiful weather. Quote

AuroranHusker Posted October 27, 2015 Report Posted October 27, 2015 I'd guess Michael could have a stress fracture that is limiting his running ability. But, that's simply a guess... Quote

AuroranHusker Posted October 27, 2015 Report Posted October 27, 2015 Nah, it's an educated guess based on experience. This is a discussion board, correct? (and, yes, I know the back story of your recent comment, jimmykc...) Quote

It appears from his photos that this is probably a simple problem which is just taking longer to heal than anticipated. Dr. William Jacobson is an orthopedic surgeon focusing in sports medicine. He is also Michael's father. This would be his other opinion when it comes to any ailments. I'm sure the team doctors get first crack but I'm guessing his father also has a say. This could also be the reason why his family is choosing to handle to release of his medical information differently. Silverbacked1, AuroranHusker and jimmykc 3 Quote
jimmykc Posted October 28, 2015 Report Posted October 28, 2015 Useful info ajb, but physicians should refrain from treating their own families in serious situations. Perhaps they are obtaining a third opinion, or perhaps there is a medical difference of opinion with dad here. Regardless, we shall hope to see young Michael on the court soon. Quote

Not saying that daddy is treating in this scenario but he's obviously going to have an opinion no matter who is or is at least going to be more involved in the process than a non-doctor parent would be. I'm also suggesting that the family being medical could be the reason why info release is being treated differently. Not necessarily because there is a difference in opinion or anything but simply because of his family's medical background and their wishes. Quote
