Grace Mitchell commits to Nebraska this afternoon.

Grace is a 6'2 wing who played for Derby High School in Derby, Kansas last season and by all accounts will play for Wellington her senior season. Wellington is located just south of Wichita. Averaged 17.6 points and 6.3 rebounds per game her junior season. HHC welcomes Grace and we hope her senior season is one of her best. She picked the Huskers from 12 other Division 1 offers. She becomes the 4th commit in the 2016 class. More info to be posted when found.

Senior forward Grace Mitchell, who transferred from Derby to Wellington this year, made a non-binding commitment to play basketball at Nebraska on Thursday.

Mitchell, who averaged 18 points and 6.3 rebounds as a junior at Derby, visited Nebraska and was enamored with the fan support of a variety of sports, including soccer, volleyball and football.

"It shows the support that Nebraska has. The fans are crazy," said Mitchell, who grew up in Wellington and moved back to live with her dad. "The coaches and the players are great and fun to be around. It just felt right."

Mitchell also took official visits to Tulsa and Texas-Arlington. She said Nebraska wants her to play the three because at 6-foot-2 she creates mismatches on the perimeter and inside.

Grace is a nice kid and nice player and will be fun to have as a Husker.  She is long, and shoots it well from the perimeter.  She didn't play a lot of high level club ball until the last 2 summers, but has developed nicely. My memory is she was a bit of a late grower for a girl and didn't get tall until after her freshman year.  The league her former hs. Derby plays in is a great hs girls league that regularly produces d1 players (last 3 years -- Kate loecker OK state; Kieryn Swenson Arkansas; Daily Handy Wyoming; Shaelyn Martin Kansas State Emily Wood NU)  Additionally lots of other kids at MIAA schools like Emporia Washburn Pitt State etc which are top 20 D2 schools so most the teams in the hs league have a couple college level players on every team. This should make the transition somewhat easier, although it is a hard transition for everybody.

She will likely put up big hs numbers this year because she is apparently transferring to Wellington which doesn't play nearly the same level of competition and is smaller.

She played with Rachel Blackburn in AAU for a while.  Rachel escorted her during a recent visit.

Her grandfather was the head football coach for the University of Kansas from 1958-1966.

I sat with her dad (Jud) during a few basketball games, and he is a great guy.  He played football for KU.

Sounds like that's a good plan.

The videos show she has real good basic skills, and is pretty agile, and versatile all over the court.

Another 3 shooter from the 3 position (as Yori/Grace has mentioned)  If it works out, it will take some pressure off the inside, and make the other defense have to cover more of the floor. Her height could be a huge advantage at the 3 slot.

From other articles and posts indicate she hasen't played lots of higher level "club" play. May take some time to get up to the speed of college play. But great family history. Love those Kansas kids !

She had a nice clear out on her first bucket. Put her defender in the cheap seats.

Grace has received more honors, this time the Wichita Eagle's Kansas Girls Basketball 1st team All State team.

Mitchell led the Crusaders to third place in Class 4A-I and a 24-1 record. She scored 62 points in three games at the 4A-I tournament. This season she averaged 21.7 points. 7.1 rebounds and 2.5 blocks. While she made 57 percent of her two-point shots, Mitchell also was efficient on the perimeter where she caused headaches for opposing defenses because of her 48-percent shooting from three-point range. Her versatility allowed her to play with her back to the basket and utilize her drop step or she roamed around on the wing, which is where she was most comfortable.

mfclap.gif  Good to Read!  I'm sure her faith in the Huskers will be justified and a new, exceptional coach will be named soon.

I know there is some trepidation regarding actions of new AD Eichorst, but I am positive he is doing, and will do, The Right Thing!
