He's been in the program for 2 full years and this is the start of his third. Had he not redshirted, he'd be a junior. He's 6'7" and his strength was supposed to be his 3-point shooting. Right now, he's tied for worst on the team in 3-point shooting. There are only 2 players who have grabbed fewer rebounds, and they're both short. Nick is the only player on the team with more turnovers than points. No one else is even close. Except maybe Bakari Evelyn with 8 points and 5 turnovers. A walk-on guard, who has just joined the team and only played in 1 game so far, has nearly matched Nick's scoring output. A true freshman (from Iowa) who's only an inch taller has scored nearly double the points and triple the rebounds. AND that freshman is 2-3 on treys. Another true freshman who is the same height has quadrupled Nick in point production and nearly tripled him in rebounds while hitting a very respectable 37.5% (3 of 8) from beyond the arc. Right now, if you had to pick the top 10 players, I don't think Nick is in there. Hooper 1 Quote

Hooper Posted August 21, 2015 Report Posted August 21, 2015 I agree, Norm. Fuller just isn't good enough to get much playing time this year. Honestly, McVeigh just outclasses him by a large margin. Honestly, McVeigh just outclasses him by a large margin. I see it this way: Starting Five: Watson Webster White Shields Hammond/Jacobson Heavy Contributors: Jacobson/Hammond Parker McVeigh Limited Minutes: Evelyn Fuller Laws Day Yeah that's the way it's looking to me too - outside of adding Morrow in there someplace I could see Coach starting Hammond & bringing Morrow off the bench relatively quickly, maybe even first TV timeout and then Jacobson for White or Shields, just so you then can run the substitutions going forward so you have one of those 2 guys on the floor nearly all of the time. Parker did step up his game quite a bit today, both in terms of scoring and in cutting down on the turnovers vs the first 2 games in Spain, perhaps feeling some pressure from the freshman. I could see Coach starting the senior, at least initially. May depend on whether Miles wants to bring more defensive spark off the bench (Parker) or more scoring/assist punch (Watson). Watson's 9-to-4 assist-to-turnover is very impressive - only Shields is even close at 9-to-7. The overall rebounding in Spain has been better than I expected, especially today against a team that had some size. Quote
Hooper Posted August 21, 2015 Report Posted August 21, 2015 Sorry, added Morrow. I believe nine guys will get heavy minutes this year. Fuller is not one of them. I don't see a role for him on this team. Parker is the senior and yes, it's hard not to imagine him starting just because of his status and playing experience, but he's just not as good as Watson offensively, doesn't see the court like Watson does, doesn't create as well for other players, and isn't a better scorer than Glynn. Parker also has no ego and doesn't mind coming off the bench. He was fantastic in that role during our tournament run in 2013-2014, and I'd love to see him go back to being that spark plug off the bench. Either way, at the end of the year, I don't believe there will be a dramatic difference in the MPG played by one vs. the other. Quote

Throw in a couple of blocks by Morrow and Shavon/Watson/Parker dropping dimes I say this team is starting to gel a little bit. These sort of trips are always good for teams to bond. twinswingohuskers Posted August 21, 2015 Report Posted August 21, 2015 Looking at these stats a few things that jump out: Our freshman aren't afraid to shoot, 43 offensive rebounds as a team in 3 games is probably more than we had in the whole season last year. Morrow and Hammond are being very selective in the shots they take. McVeigh and Jacobson are at least as good as advertised if not better. Morrow and Watson are as good as we expected and Evelyn has a ways to go but does show some flashes once in awhile. Quote

uneblinstu Posted August 22, 2015 Report Posted August 22, 2015 How come nobody is answering the question...was this supposed to be the team that was going to blow us out, or is that Sunday??? From what I'm hearing, that team may not have made it on the schedule. This team is in a transition year, from what it sounds like, and don't have the talent some on this side of the pond thought they did. Instead, they'll end up with three competitive games, most likely and this will end up being the blow out. This next game is supposedly more comparable to the first two games. It will be interesting to see how we respond to playing on back to back games and if they get over confident after an easy win. Quote
