"Ubel's challenge to stay on task has been complicated by the inexplicable beating he has taken on message boards since his arrival. He isn't LeBron James, and he never said he was.

Yet verbal vandals have hacked at Ubel since his freshman year, somehow ignoring that he played immediately instead of redshirting; he often played out of position due to injuries or recruiting failures; and his statistics suffered because he was overloaded with on-the-floor grunt work to make his team better."

Who in the world did that?

Well, it sure wasn't this hombre. Though I think I know SOME of the people Lee's talking about. They know who they are.

Brandon took heat because he was not ready to play as a true freshman. Doc should have been the one taking verbal attacks for not redshirting Ubel.

Norm, that is the fun of posting this article. A few of us took our lumps defending Brandon. You cannot bust on a kid just because the kid does not live up to the lofty expectations of some. The kid is who he is. Warts may exist, but if the kid busts his butt attempting to overcome those warts, then you have to cheer for him. Brandon has improved each and every year he has been here. As Tim mentioned above, just think if he could have redshirted...

I'm happy that he is finally getting the praise he's deserved the last couple of years. There two people who I distinctly remember going out of their way to bring him down; one never posts here anymore, one very rarely. Though I wish both would chime in on this and admit they were wrong. :)

Great kid who we're lucky to have seen grow and mature these last four years. Hope to see them pull out 4-5 more wins this year for him and the other seniors.

Here are some kudos relating to Lee Barfknecht's article:

1. Kudos to Brandon Ubel for a Husker career that is well-deserving of such praise;

2. Kudos to Lee Barfknecht for writing the article; and

3. Kudos to Lee for coining the "Dark Period" phrase for the dozen-or-so basketball seasons immediately preceding Tim Miles.

Lee Bee did a terrific job with this article. Well deserved, and I hope that the fans soon recognize the quality that Brandon brings to the program...

I was one who was very critical of Ubel, never really thinking he would amount to much. He has improved his game greatly the past four years as when he first arrived on campus he couldnt even hold on to the ball. Fast forward 4 years later and he is a solid player. Probably wouldn't start for most BCS but in reality if we were the team we all want to be in the future he would be a solid contributor coming off the bench. It appears his biggest jump of improvement has come from Coach Miles...I'm sure Miles would have loved one more year to further his game.
