Saw a discussion on another board that indicates we're in the bottom of NCAA Div I in terms of completion percentage for passing.  We're ranked 109th out of 125 D1 teams in completion %, which ain't very good.  In the ballpark, though, with Wisconsin (#103) and Minnesota (#118).  And, actually, this isn't an area where our B1G brethren shine particularly well, as 9 B1G teams are ranked 70th or worse in completion %.  That's basically bottom 40%, is what it is.  So, we're not alone.

But it's not all bad.   There are bright spots.

First of all, we move the chains.  Sustaining drives is important and we have more first downs than almost 90% of all D1 teams.  We also convert on 3rd down better than more than 75% of the rest of Div I.  So, again, moving chains is something we're good at.  And that has helped us produce the #11 scoring offense in the nation, notwithstanding the fact that we haven't been completing a high percentage of our passes.

On the other side of the ball, we also are in the top 30% for first downs allowed by our defense and we're 3rd best in all the land for 3rd down conversion defense.  Which means we're keeping our opponents from moving the chains and that has allowed us to produce the nation's 16th best scoring defense.

So, complain about Tommie Armstrong not completing a high percentage of his throws (and then ask yourself if you were among those who were convinced that Taylor Martinez was horrible and only starting because Bo had tunnel vision) all you want, but you might miss the fact that we're scoring while not being scored upon better than almost anyone else in the land.

Our combined rankings for scoring offense and scoring defense is 27.  Wisconsin's combined scoring offense/defense rank is 19, Ohio State's is 21, and Michigan State is tied with us at 27.  And no one else in the B1G is close to that.

So ... be a little happy, OK?

If anyone is offering 12-1 and getting shut out of the 4 team playoff I'm taking it 24/7

Dude, I'd be psyched with 10-3 and getting get 4 loss monkey off our backs.

But hey we look good against the Rutgers of football! I realize this thread was started in reference to my post on HuskersOnline. Despite another dismal performance by our QB our problems are still much larger than that. But, that won't improve until we find the right coach.

I take it, by virtue of the fact you didn't respond to this thread when I posted it TWO WEEKS AGO,  you didn't dispute my numbers.

I don't think anyone is going to try to say we didn't suck on Saturday.  But that doesn't change the fact that, if it was you posting on HOL that I started this thread in response to, you were cherry picking the bad stats in order to make your point.

Two weeks ago, there were lots of very good stats.  And those stats showed that what you were complaining about us being bad at was something a good number of other B1G schools were also bad at.

I wasn't cherry picking anything...my post was clearly about Tommy Armstrong and not our offense as a whole.  If we had someone who could throw the ball IMO our offense would look much better against good defenses.  We have an okay line, some very solid WR's, and a great running back.  I pointed out just how bad Tommy has been throwing the ball...can anyone really dispute that? The kid is at the bottom of the NCAA in completion percentage.  That can work vs the Rutgers and Illinois of college football...but like clock work when we face a good defense we crumble.  IMO we have faced 3 solid to good defenses this year in Miami, MSU, and Wiscy. One game the offense played very well and Tommy played well despite his turnovers.  The other two were disasters.  Tommy was 6 for 18 against Wiscy....6 for 18, and two of his pass completions were on screen plays.  I don't place full blame on Tommy as Beck certainly does him no favors...but we need MUCH better QB play.  Much better.  Our stats are clearly inflated by the level of competition we have faced.  Its great we are able to move the ball on Florida Atlantic...but it does not mean much when face plant when we face a team with similar talent as NU.  And the sad thing is...I actually do believe we have better talent than Wiscy.

Should Bo consider firing Paps and hiring Muschamp to replace him?

JP doesn't call the defense...Bo does.  With that said, why give Bo this luxury? He had his chance to hire his own OC and DC when Watson and Pelini left and he settled on two guys that had zero experience leading an offense and defense at this level.  With that said, I don't think it would matter who Bo brought on...this is clearly a systemic issue and it all starts with the head man.  What you see...is what you get

For the record, I agree.

I haven't had strong feelings one way or the other about Bo in a long while.  As a co-worker explained it earlier today, I haven't been out wanting to see him get fired but neither would I lose a lot of sleep if it happened.  I'm not emotionally invested right now in whether Bo keeps his job or not.  And I don't feel like getting emotionally invested.

In some ways, I hope they go ahead and fire him so that either:

1)  they can complain that the administration was unwilling to spend enough money to get the guy they wanted;

2)  the guy they wanted comes in and does as bad or worse than Bo so they can shut up about thinking they know so much; or

3)  some completely different guy comes in with no pedigree and jazzes up the program a la Tim Miles with basketball.

But just for the sake of not having to hear, read or listen to their rants, can we please just appease the haters?  Just fire the coach and start the process over so that they can complain about wanting to fire the next guy in 3 years' time.  At least that way we get 1-2 years of a relatively complaint-free zone.

It's unfortunate the "haters" got their way with the firing of Doc.  Isn't that what they were called years ago?  Even though the "haters" saw the same butt whoopings a mile away this year in football we should just remain status quo.  Why dare to be great? I guess this is Nebraska football now...Melvin Gordon approves. 56 unanswered points.  But I don't see why one has to be labeled a "hater" for being correct by labeling the obvious while a small number(now) of the fanbase buys the Bo kool aid.  But, in the end it won't be up to us again....and I doubt Bo will be fired...and we know nobody else wants him.

For the record, I don't think there were any fans who didn't think it was time for Doc to go at the end.  By that time I don't think there were any "haters" left, nor do I think that anyone felt that it was unfortunate he was let go.  We all knew by then that it was time.

I also think that Bo is getting very close to being in that same spot right now.  Eichorst may or may not retain Bo this year, but if he didn't, there aren't many who would complain.  It's not so much the reluctancy to "dare to be great" in football, it's just that the Solich/Callahan situation is still fresh enough in everyone's memory that there are still some who are leery of turning a bad situation worse for the sake of just making a change.  Finish 8-5 this year and then I think we'd be well justified in seeking change at the head football coach position.

To go back to the Doc comparison here for a minute, I think the football program is in about the same spot as the basketball program was after the Wichita St debacle in the NIT.  Teetering, but not quite toppled yet.

The haters are the guys who cry wolf starting in year one.

They might be right that, eventually, there really is a wolf.

But, when that time comes, the rest of us are tired -- damn tired -- of hearing about this wolf all the time.  To the point that we're just not going to listen to you complain about the damn wolf anymore and, BTW, I hope he eats all your damn sheep when he finally does get here.

The fact that a wolf eventually shows up doesn't change the fact that they jumped the gun for several years before the wolf finally appeared.

ive had mixed feelings about Bo for the last two years, i enjoys his passion, his ability to hire staff that go out and find the gems in the dirt ala (Maliek Collins, Kenny Bell, Ameer, ETC.) but when it comes down to it i think its time for a change, When we went up 17-3 i was like maybe we got this...than Gordon hit that run and i was like welp its been fun, the holiday bowl sounds nice. Who that person that leads the change is whether its a unknown, a local hero, or someone with known prestige all situations are plausible.

Unfortunate reality IMO is no matter if he stays or goes the Huskers are years from being a top tier team again. Either settling for what has become the new reality or giving the needed time to a new staff.
