tbowman Posted January 31, 2014 Report Posted January 31, 2014 Love the guy, plays his heart out, but passes up so many mid-range looks. Shoot the ball! Is he just lacking confidence in his shot right now, or is this intentional? Quote
tcp Posted January 31, 2014 Report Posted January 31, 2014 he did shoot the ball tonight. and missed most of them. 4 of 11 maybe? when you do that, you tend to start passing the ball. he did finish pretty well, though, so there's that. Quote
Norm Peterson Posted January 31, 2014 Report Posted January 31, 2014 3 of 12, actually. He's a far better shooter than that. It's a bit of confidence. Gotta be. But I see him making some progress and doing some things to be a little more assertive at finding his offense. He'll be fine. But we do need that guy who is willing and able to take and make the shots that Shavon declines right now. I think he can eventually get back to that level but we sure do need him to. Quote
MichHusker Posted January 31, 2014 Report Posted January 31, 2014 While shavon shot bad, he stilled playing decently in other ways by corralling 4 rebounds and dishing out 4 assists, which was a team high I think throwback, Norm Peterson and Dean Smith 3 Quote
tbowman Posted January 31, 2014 Author Report Posted January 31, 2014 To be clear, my issue is the passing up of relatively wide open mid-range shots. He passes up that shot in an attempt to get to the rim where he is having trouble finishing. When he's that wide open I just think it's a shot he can hit. And if he hits a couple of those shots, it probably makes getting to the rim a bit easier as well. Regardless, I am happy he put up 12 shots tonight. NU needs him to shoot more. Just want to see more of a mid-range game. Quote
Huskerbball88 Posted January 31, 2014 Report Posted January 31, 2014 Shavon doesn't need to shoot mid range jumpers, he needs to put the ball on the floor and get to the hoop. Free throw line could be his new home this year if he'd drive more Quote

Just want to see more of a mid-range game. well, if you noticed in the second half we were springing Shavon for that 12-15 foot shot against their D. He was just clanking them, most of them short, which made me wonder if we were back to the knee problem again. There's clearly been an effort to get him open from that range to compensate for him getting stuffed going to the hoop. He gets that shot, it'll open up a better driving lane on shot fakes for him, and I expect to see that as his basic offensive game next year. Quote

Free throw line could be his new home this year if he'd drive more maybe we're watching different games, but Shavon's had problems finishing at the rim all year. He doesn't have the jump to get over or past more athletic and bigger defenders, so he needs to get them out of position. He *has* to be a threat to hit from mid-range to do that. And that was clearly an offense we were running for him tonight, which is why he got the number of shots he did get. Coach has it going on. He knows we need more than just Terran doing all the scoring. Quote
PimpMario Posted January 31, 2014 Report Posted January 31, 2014 Shavon has had real trouble with his mid range and long range shots recently (this season?). If he can't knock down the mid range shot he shouldn't be our "zone buster" who gets the ball at the top of the key in the middle of the key. Quote

It's rare that you completely heal up during the year, so maybe--again, maybe--it was a problem tonight. But he can make that shot regularly. He did last year. Quote

But he clearly is still struggling with it because he has had several bad shooting nights recently. He does a lot of good things for us and compared to the rest of the team deserves minutes. But we really really really really need him to "get healthy" and get right. He also struggled as the zone buster tonight turning the ball over several times. Quote
ajb5856 Posted January 31, 2014 Report Posted January 31, 2014 Minnesota game. Time ticking down in the first half. Shavon with ball in hand on right wing. Has the open 3 with about 5 on the clock, doesn't take it. He wants to and tries to drive, not there. So, Shavon step back 3...buries it. Up 5 at half instead of 2. Team exits the floor headed toward the locker room. Coaches are trailing the players. Coach Miles takes off on a dead sprint out the black curtain and down the tunnel. Coach runs down Shavon, gets in his face and screams, "that's why you shoot the ****ing basketball, Shavon!". Shoot the basketball, Shavon. I think Coach might agree. hhcmatt 1 Quote

Huskerpapa Posted January 31, 2014 Report Posted January 31, 2014 Shavon is still mastering his release point. I have noticed that throughout the year. He will continue to improve because he has a great basketball IQ. In the meantime, I think we will continue to see hot and cold out of Shavon on the offensive side of the court. Norm Peterson 1 Quote
Norm Peterson Posted January 31, 2014 Report Posted January 31, 2014 I think he's getting it, though. He'll be fine. He's working out some kinks right now but he'll be fine. Gotta trust that. Quote

hhcmatt Posted January 31, 2014 Report Posted January 31, 2014 We need someone to hit mid range jumpers. Might as well be Shavon. Quote

Husker4theSpurs Posted January 31, 2014 Report Posted January 31, 2014 Shavon has struggled a bit from mid range but he does and will eventually have that game. Most of his apprehension, in especially the second half, appeared to stem from having it drilled in his head at halftime "GET TO THE RIM" ... We settled for and missed a lot of mid range jumpers in the first half. I can imagine that was an emphasis of Miles's in the second half. Quote
HoiBall Posted January 31, 2014 Report Posted January 31, 2014 Once Shavon starts to consistently hit that mid-range like he did last year he becomes a very tough matchup. Now if only Tai can get going on a consistent basis we would have three guys that are a threat to get into the paint which opens up outside jumpers, with little to no defense in your face. Quote
nebrasketball10 Posted February 1, 2014 Report Posted February 1, 2014 I thinks it's largely confidence with Shavon. Him and Tai could use a nice shot of it. Maybe go Ron Artest style in the locker room Quote
