Hope we didn't miss the hints and jumped in on this Atwood kid too late.  His recruiting is really heating up.  He just got an offer from Arizona State.  Already holds offers from Wichita St, Arkansas, Western Ky, TCU and Auburn (among some others.)  Now getting looks from Iowa, Creighton, Indiana, Florida State, SMU and Nebraska among others.

This combined juco haul would be a pretty big deal.  Especially with Dickerson just being a freshman and coming in with 4 to play 3.  If Atwood is on board with the package deal thing, they could combine to make an impact right away next year.

There are probably not a lot of schools who both have the room and have positions of need at each of their spots where they can come in right away and showcase their abilities, plus have a returning core of players that would fill out a lineup that would be competitive.

Most of the top schools you'd expect would have filled most of their free spots in November and might have  maybe one opening still for spring.  Do the schools getting involved have enough room and do they have room at the right positions?  We happen to be one of those schools.

Just to amplify the above, we lose Gallegos and lost Biggs at the guard spots, plus we return a kid in Benny Parker who, while a great kid, has some deficits that make him a permanent role player.  And all year we've been saying we're one big away.  So, a combo kid like Dickerson who could realistically play either guard spot and Atwood who has some impressive numbers as a big could jump into a lineup that, with our returning players filling in the remaining spots, could be pretty competitive.  If that's the situation they're looking for, that's pretty much the situation we offer.

I would like to have Trey, but if we believe Tai is the PG of the future, we would have 2 sophmore PG's. I think this staff really needs to focus on getting Trey and another Leslie type big.

Here's a pic and the dude looks ample to me:

He does look long and lean Norm, Long and lean.:)

Thanks to whoever re-sized the pic.  But look at the guns on that kid.  That is not some skinny stick like Deng Deng.  He doesn't have the size of Elbert Robinson but he's got some muscle and that's one of the things we need.  Conditioning could add 10-15# to him by next b-ball season.  He's listed at 220# at his juco.  That could clearly increase to 235# by next November if he gets the right kind of conditioning by a guy like our S&C guy, Tim Wilson.

We have the need at both positions and we have the rest of the supporting cast to go with it.  And the opportunity for an immediate impact on a program is there.  If that's what they want, that's what we offer.

I agree, his juco numbers are twice what Leslie's were at a higher level. + Leslie prefers the bench role. I see Atwood at the 4, walt still at the 5, than both bigs off the bench at times, unless we don't feel hammond is ready than we can rotate 3 & go small when we want too (Don't forget about Fuller being groomed as a 4)

Atwood + Dickerson would  be a tremendous hall Norm, I agree. My only concern would be shooting but I think hawkins, Tai, & Fuller all have the ability to be solid shooters + Shavon, Walt, & Terran.

Long ways off but it sure would be nice!

Assuming we got both here's the way I'd go with starters and their immediate back up with obvious options to mix and match who is on the floor when.

Webster- Dickerson

Petteway- Hawkins

Shields- Fuller

Atwood- Smith

Pitchford- Hammond

I don't think Dickerson comes here to play behind anyone.  Both he and Tai are combo guards who could play point and off-guard and be out there at the same time.  Kamdy, it might be a stretch that we get either, or both, but if we did, I'd have to think the lineup might look slightly different ...

Dickerson

Webster or Petteway

Petteway or Shields

Atwood or Shields

Pitchford  or Smith or Hammond or Atwood

Hawkins can play 1-3 as can Petteway.  Shields can play 3 or 4 as can Fuller.  Smith could go either 4 or 5 as can Pitchford and probably Atwood as well.

Lots of variability to that roster if that's how recruiting pans out.

Of course, our returning guards/wings can all play multiple positions.  Shields might back up Petteway at the 3 but he can also find plenty of minutes backing up the 4.  Hawkins can back up any back court position.  Petteway can play multiple spots.  Tai can play the 1 or the 2 and so can Dickerson I believe.

Shields still gets good minutes and might, in fact, bump Petteway down to starting at the 2 while Tai becomes back up at both the 1 and the 2.  Lots of ways it could play out but Dickerson isn't going to come here to be someone's back up.

that's a pretty legit 10 man rotation, and Smith is the only player that would be a senior.

That was my hang up as well but I dont see Petteway, Shields, and Pitchford relinquinshing their starting roles.  Webster obviously hasnt lit the world on fire but he could make a big jump.  That obviously open the 4 spot but if we got Atwood I dont see how you can keep those numbers on the bench.  So my thinking was there would be no true scorer on the second unit and Dickerson could be that guy, much like a Ginobili, to always make sure there's scoring potential on the floor.

Well, instead of picking starters, why don't we say we'd have a hell of an 8-man rotation:

Dickerson

Webster

Hawkins

Petteway

Shields

Atwood

Smith

Pitchford

I'd go:

Webster - Dickerson

Petteway - Hawkins

Shields- Fuller

Pitchford - Atwood

Hammond - Smith

Why recruit two backups?  If they're coming in as juco transfers they should either be expected to start or pass on them.  I'm sure they would expect to start and I doubt they'd be interested in going anywhere to sit the bench.  And I suspect they think they're good enough to start immediately at whatever school they end up signing with.

So, if you want them, you should be willing to pencil them in as starters.  If you can't pencil (not pen, but pencil) them in as starters, then we should look elsewhere. Like 2015.

I really wonder if Miles thinks Tai is gonna play more of the 2 guard. Does that push Shields to the bench? Tai has to get so much better in so many ways.

Again, Shields is the second leading scorer on the team. He's not gonna suddenly be the sixth man.

"We're a big away."  If we recruit that big, someone who started this year is going to sit next year.  It's not going to be Petteway.  Could be Pitchford.  Probably not Shields.  So, I agree.  Sort of.  Shields, though, is caught in a position game.  We need another big, a guy who can come in and start either at the post or at the PF position.  If it's this Atwood guy, well, Shields ain't a 5.  Which means Shields either starts at 3 and Petteway moves to the 2, or Shields comes off the bench.

Whatever big we get -- assuming we get one who can be that "one big away" guy -- is going to supplant a returning starter.

Tai has zero outside game right now. Unless he improves his jump shot dramatically then I can't see him getting serious minutes at the 2 spot.
