Not a full hour tonight - no explanation - Miles was on the phone, so he's likely out recruiting

Frustrating day Saturday, but interesting as it was 3-pt game just before halftime?

  • Don't think we scored FG last 6-7 min
  • That's the disappointing part
  • If you look at the ending, it looks like we felt defeated
  • We have to compete to the very end, even though OSU was hard to score against
  • 33-30 near end of first half, sitting in good spot, but in foul trouble
  • Hoping to run a little clock, limit possessions
  • Still had 3 starters on the floor with Rivers & Hawkins
  • All heck broke loose
  • We let them have 40% of their pts on run outs in the first half
  • That's far too many
  • Needed to get those under control in the 2nd half
  • Kept trading baskets then we had turnover & they hit a couple 3s, then it was 16-pt game in a hurry
  • Last 8 min was really disappointing

Smith started, how did he handle that role? Will that continue?

  • Don't know yet - feel good either way
  • His minutes will be about the same either way
  • Haven't thought much about it, thinking more about Michigan
  • Either way Smith is very important to what we do
  • Powerful hard nosed player
  • Makes a lot of things happen
  • Pitchford was feeling very ill, tried to play, but didn't play great
  • We'll need him, we saw how good he can be at Iowa, esp important with Smith hurt in that game
  • Got to get everyone on the same page
  • Seen 3 of the best defensive teams on the road in a row
  • OSU best defense in country, Cincy is 3rd best defense, Iowa 19th or 20th
  • Hard to win on the road vs such good defensive teams, wanted to get one or two of them though

Biggs?

  • Took over game vs Iowa
  • Quick enough to get to rim vs some very fast players

Michigan?

  • They don't do much wrong
  • Losses at Duke, at Iowa St, at Charlotte, and one other loss, forget who to
  • When you look at them, 7-4/8-4 doesn't seem great
  • But their SoS is near the top in the country
  • Losing McGary hurts them, good shot blocker
  • But their other bigs are matching his stat production
  • They're a heck of a team
  • Lost Burke, but younger players are coming along well
  • Albrecht had 18 pts in 1st half of national championship game, only playing 14 min a game this year
  • Mich very deep in talent, will be great late in year
  • Tough schedule & injuries are messing up their dynamic now
  • Mich is going to get better & better, we need to play well to beat them

Tempo?

  • Mich is technically the slowest team in the league in terms of possessions per game
  • We'll prob be about where we've been, 60-65 possessions per game
  • Don't want 70+, they make too many 3s and are too good in transition

Mental hurdles with tough games?

  • Just talk about process
  • Try to get better every day, every game
  • Comeback vs Iowa showed our resiliance
  • That's what made the OSU game so disappointing
  • Couldn't rise above how difficult it was to score
  • Played like a disappointed group
  • Last few minutes put a lot of subs in, part of why score ended up where it was
  • Have to talk about our mental toughness to stick with it and stay in it
  • Life works that way, you'll have some tough times
  • We can't just put our heads down & accept defeat, I think we did that a little bit

  • Can't wait for Michigan, good to get some home cooking
  • We don't intend to let Michigan be the first team to come into Pinnacle and win

That's it for tonight - full show/full hour next week

Anybody know why Miles doesn't take phone calls from fans?  I get tonight, but I've listened to a few when they were at Carlos O' Kelley's and I think he may have taken 1 call.  Was traveling in Iowa tonight and heard  2 segments of Fred Hoiberg's radio show and all they did was take calls, probably over 15 calls in 25-30 minutes.   Seemed like Doc took more phone calls too.

I don't think he gets many calls. They're constantly giving out the phone number during the show, asking for people to call, so I'd guess that means they don't have anyone waiting on the line. I can't imagine they're blocking calls - Coach Miles is about the last coach on earth I'd think would be avoiding fans.  ;)

Now that football season is over, they may get more people listening to his show and calling in.

Throwback is right. There simply are not many callers. One sign that we have a ways to go as a program.

Or it could be that people just want to listen to Miles.  I don't know.  People don't always have questions.  I have gone to events where he's spoken just for the entertainment value.

By the way, props to Greg Sharpe.  I think he's done a terrific job on Sports Nightly.  I don't listen to it much.  Got out of the habit when John Bishop took over and, frankly, there hasn't been a compelling host since.  Lane Grindel was at least a nice guy even if he was a bit dull.  But -- and no offense to Jeff Culhane -- Culhane I just couldn't listen to.  His sort of artificial "radio voice" thing, no real inspiring commentary, failure to engage callers in discussion, how he seemed to think he had to hedge every position he took by sort of arguing the contrary.  Just ... couldn't listen.

But, tonight, for example, I caught some of Greg Sharpe doing the show before the Miles hour and he just seems to know how to do it.  How to keep it interesting.  Talked a little bit about the Nebraska football program looking for a new assistant.  Talked about some of the bowl games.  Actually expressed some opinions.  Just made it more interesting all the way around.

Again, I'm not a regular but if Greg is the regular host now, I might tune back in more frequently.

Looking at some of the fun....but totally pointless questions Coach gets when he does his twitter Q&A sessions, I'm kind of glad he doesn't take questions over the phone. We might get the oh so important question of do you like ranch or blue cheese with your wings

Speaking of which...I see Runzas are finally making their first appearance at the arena.

Too many other media distractions to talk on the phone any more. Easier to text and watch tv while doing your taxes and eating your fast food supper at the same time. I always forget to listen to his show anyway. Used to be a regular on the old Moe Iba call in show and remember making him laugh by exaggerating my good ol' Kansas twang and convincing Moe that I was someone named Roy Bowser from Ceresco and that I was on my 5 pound walkie talkie cell phone in my barn where I was in the process of helpin' to birth a new calf. Those were the days.

I like to think it's a sign of how well Miles communicates things already.

Are there things people want to know that he's not going to dance around?
