HuskerActuary Posted July 3, 2013 Report Posted July 3, 2013 If the NCAA doesn't clear Tai Webster while they gave a gift to Creighton in granting Gibbs a sixth year (where a similar case had never been approved before), I will erupt. I guess I don't see the connection between the two things. The connection is that the NCAA was extremely generous with the Gibbs ruling. Gibbs didn't deserve the sixth year - he knows it, McDermott knows it, the CU compliance department knows it. He is extremely lucky to get it. If the NCAA doesn't allow Tai in, it will be yet another case of extreme inconsistencies shown by them regarding harshness v. generosity between various situations. Silverbacked1 and Hooper 2 Quote

I guarantee that Craydumb was absolutely "shocked" that Gibbs got an extra year. If they thought that there was any chance of him getting a 6th year, they would have saved a scholly for him. Instead, Dougie M had to "fall on the sword" and give up his scholly for Gibbs. Silverbacked1 and Creighton Fan 1 1 Quote

PimpMario Posted July 3, 2013 Report Posted July 3, 2013 anyone know the what the reason would be if Tai is not cleared? See that is the crazy thing about the clearinghouse. They could say they have issues with his credits lining up. Or the institution they came from. Or that he can't produce enough evidence that he actually earned the credits. Here is the really devious thing. What if everything with Tai is great and above board AND the NCAA clears him but not until December? Or what if it takes until February? That doesn't help us a whole lot; at least for this year. Now, I am secretly getting more excited he will get cleared in time for the start of fall semester but I am only basing this secret excitement off of others peoples excitement. If you press a gun to my head I would say he has a better than 50% of being clear by start of fall semester. But publicly I want to keep up my pessimistic "don't get your hopes up" attitude. But what does one thing have to do with the other? If Gibbs was some international kid that was granted eligibility, there might be more of a plausible connection. However, the questions in his case were: 1) during his redshirt year at Gonzaga, was he physically able to play or was he injured; and 2) the year he sat out for transferring per NCAA rules was he physically able to play or was he injured. As to Tai, it would seem that the issues are more along the lines of whether he meets NCAA admission standards. Two completely different issues, two completely different tests. Heck, I wouldn't be surprised if two completely different parts of the NCAA were involved in deciding the two matters.. BTW, Creighton hasn't exactly been successful in getting clearance for international players in the past either. We've had several players that had to sit out various numbers of games because they played on pro teams overseas (even though they didn't take any money themselves). Quote
CrazyforNUHOOPS Posted July 3, 2013 Report Posted July 3, 2013 He'll be good to go when he gets here. Trust me. Quote
jimmykc Posted July 3, 2013 Report Posted July 3, 2013 I hope Tai didn't forget to pack copies of all his homework for the last four years. I believe that is what got Sallie in trouble. Quote

Hooper Posted July 4, 2013 Report Posted July 4, 2013 Man I feel bad for this kid... The expectations on him are insane. High possibility he can only disappoint. I don't believe the expectations are that high for him among the more knowledgeable fans. Anyone who's watched his high school or post-high school film knows that he's a raw talent who has a lot of work to do on his game, especially on the defensive side, and a difficult transition to make from New Zealand pro ball to US college ball. It's not like folks are viewing him as a "one and done" guy or anything even remotely close to that. He's just a very talented but somewhat raw prospect who would contend for a starting spot if he gets cleared. If anything, Fran Fraschilla has made by far the most hyperbolic statements about Tai. jamar1700 Posted July 4, 2013 Report Posted July 4, 2013 I feel some of the hype (if not most) is related to the way things have gone wrong in prior off-seasons. In the past these drama's always seemed to play out the wrong way. This could be seen as the last hurdle to a "clean" start to the season. And another corner turned for the program. Nebrasketballer Posted July 9, 2013 Author Report Posted July 9, 2013 In my opinion, Miles would not have come out with any sort of statement, if he thought there was any legit chance that Webster would not be cleared. First, in an interview on Sports Nightly, Miles said that he was worried about Webster. Then, Webster "carved" the SAT on his 4th attempt. Now Miles comes out and makes the statement that he is now very "optimistic" about Webster being cleared and that he is already enrolled in classes and that he will be here on July 13th. I don't think Miles would come out with a statement like this, if he wasn't sure Webster would make it. It would be one thing for a media member to make this statement, but the fact that Miles himself made the statement. makes me feel that, based on all of the information that Miles has access to, there is an overwhelmingly high chance that Webster will be here in Lincoln on July 13th. Being here on July 13th and being cleared are two different thing from what I'm understanding. I may be wrong tho That is correct. Also, there is a very large difference between being "optimistic" and being "very optimistic." I'm fairly certain Miles just said he was "optimistic." It's certainly more encouraging than his radio interview a couple weeks ago, but at this point it's out of Miles hands. Our admissions dept and the NCAA are going to have to help us out. ok... then: In my opinion, Miles would not have come out with any sort of statement, if he thought there was any legit chance that Webster would not be cleared. Miles made a public statement that the situation with Webster has improved and instead of being worried, he is now "optimistic". It wouldn't make sense for Miles to make the new statement to the public/media, if things with Webster were only slightly better now. Silverbacked1 and hhcmatt 2 Quote

But recall, down under it is legal for him to drink....therefore he is doing nothing wrong/illegal...one of the differences he will have to get used to up here....here is a summary of their law 18 is Minimum age applies for beverages with 1.15% ABV or over; no restrictions on beverages less than 1.15% ABV. Persons under 18 may not drink outside private residences or private functions unless accompanied by their parent or legal guardian. Alcohol may be supplied to minors only by their parent or legal guardian, but no adult hosts of private functions may supply alcohol. Quote
