Tim Miles has upgraded the recruiting for Nebraska basketball in the short time that he has been here.  In the 2013 class, 2 players are ranked in the top 35 at their position and all of the high school players that he signed are ranked in the top 60 at their position.  The transfer that he signed in the 2013 class has D1 experience.  In the 2012 class, the players that he recruited were primarily transfers.  2 of the 3 transfers had D1 experience at BCS schools, one of which being Florida which made it to the Elite Eight in the NCAA tournament.  So far, 3 out of the 4 transfers that Miles has signed have D1 experience and there has been 1 JC transfer.

2013: 2 players ranked in top 35. Every player ranked in top 60. Transfer has D1 experience.

2012: 2 of 3 transfers have D1 experience.

2011: 0 players ranked in top 35. 2 Players ranked in top 60.

2010: 0 high school players. All 3 transfers were JC.

2009: 1 player ranked in top 35. 2 players ranked in top 60. All 3 transfers were JC. (Nebraska’s only top 35 player ended up leaving)

2008: 0 players ranked in top 35. 0 players ranked in top 60.

2007: 1 player ranked in top 35. 1 player ranked in top 60. All 5 transfers were JC. (Nebraska’s only top 60 player ended up leaving)

In my opinion, it is pretty obvious that this class is the best class that has been signed at Nebraska in over a decade.  There is obviously still need for further improvement and I think everyone here (myself included) is anxious for Nebraska to sign a stud big-man to play Center, but there is undeniable progress being made under Miles.  You have to start somewhere and it doesn't happen over night...

Below are Nebraska’s recruiting classes from the last few seasons.  Each player is listed along with their rank at their position.  ESPN only went back to 2007, so that is why I stopped there.

Well, we see what rankings can be worth when Alonzo Edwards is ranked #21` at his position while Toney McCray isn't ranked at all.  And Shavon being ranked #117 in 2012 while Rivers and Rivers and Josiah Moore were #42 and #68 at their positions, respectively.

But, overall, I see your point.  :)

Yeah, I agree with that, but also, wasn't the problem with Edwards primarily an injury issue?  Like a shoulder or knee?

I will wait and judge how they do on the floor, especially their work ethic.  If they have the work ethic, if they can absorb coaching and show growth physically and mentally; then I (we) will be happy campers.

Not sure how you can declare this year's class better than 2009.

Ubel, Standhardinger, gallegos, and jeter are/will be pros at some level.

Hankins and Holley weren't bad players either.

Your point on the first 4 are valid, but actually, Hankins-Cole and Holley were indeed bad players at this level.

More like the item that sits upon his shoulders.

there's no guarantee that smith will give us more than what hankins cole gave us. A big body to bang in the paint. for 10-15 minutes. Holley at the very least was a great athlete.

No - he was just terrible. And dumb.

Pretty easily...

2013: 2 players ranked in top 35. Every player ranked in top 60. Transfer has D1 experience.

2009: 1 player ranked in top 35. 2 players ranked in top 60. All 3 transfers were JC. (Nebraska’s only top 35 player ended up leaving)

And the 2013 class doesn't have an almost equal amount of JUCO transfers and high school players.  2009 class did... Hard to build a program when half of your players are JUCO transfers when you are at a place like Nebraska where you are not getting first pick of the JUCO pool...

Yes, he had a badly injured motor.

I disagree.  He wasn't terrible, nor was he dumb.  He maybe lacked motivation, though.

His shot rivaled Shawn Stegall's for ugliest shot I saw at Nebraska. And he was incredibly dumb on the court - never new where to be. Also had zero quickness.

Interesting statement

This is the first sentence from Robin Washut in a Rivals article today talking about recruiting.

"Over the past couple decades, Nebraska has rarely even gotten a chance to get its foot in the door when it comes to recruiting the elite level high school prospects."

The article obviously went on to illustrate how that has changed/is changing since Miles has come to Nebraska... I thought it was interesting and that it applied to this topic of the recruiting of Tim Miles and his staff...

I am not comparing these guys with Smith, as I have never seen him play.  But I did see Hankins-cole and Holley frequently.  And they weren't good. Holley was a great vertical jumper. That is it.  With his injuries, he was no longer a great athlete, except with the vertical.  Hankins-Cole averaged 9.6 minutes a game, 4 points and 2 rebounds.  Holley 9.2 minutes, 3 points and 2 boards per game.

Ha - sorry. Typed that in at a red light. My point stands... Guy was awful.

I will give you the benefit of the doubt contained in your new post...OK, you knew....but driving while typing/texting is dumb...and dangerous!

Eeeesh messageboarding while driving? I wish someone invented how to deactivate a drivers phone.  Stop light texting is just annoying! Nothing worse than missing your left turn light because some person is looking down at their phone.

At the time I thought Alonzo was being misused and he could play a bigger role.  After letting his season play out and seeing his stats at north Texas I now know he really was just bad.

I'm happy that this class appears to be one of the best in recent times, but I'll try and hold my excitement until I see them play.  For all we know we landed a bunch of Alonzos.
