How did our roster get this depleted?  We cannot sustain our performance with 8 players.  Bourne in a sling has to be concerning.  Good thing we play Samford next.  We have to get a full squad of scholarship players and add walk-ons.

Tonight, we shot lights out and moved the ball well offensively.  When we shoot like tonight we will be a tough out.

How many scholarships do you get in basketball?

Like we have discussed before...we have maybe more depth than quite a while. Have a full squad that can play and be competitive!  We shot 50% using everyone on the bench ...no small feat !    There were days in the past, if we were short so many players... we might struggle.

Whisky isn't a force right now, but they're getting better, and have a bunch of new kids.  Their center gets another year or two experience, and she'll become a problem for other teams.

Jazz of course had a little affect on the game. I'll take her scoring over assists any day. Issie is must on the floor...recover fast please.

The "team" did it again.

Does anyone believe it is hard for Amy to get a full roster because of the way she plays. Everyone gets to play and a lot of the better recruits want more time instead of sharing? I think it takes the right person to fit in Amys system and finding one that is decently good that is ok with the sharing of time is hard to come by. That would be my thoughts on why never a full team.

karl that rationale is backwards i believe re: better recruits not wanting to come.   We could lose a very elite kid now and then because they want to play 38-40 min but the teams that only play 6-7 kids are more apt to have smaller rosters or higher turnover because 7-8 aren't playing at all and leave.  I do believe the playing time issue gets used against us by some schools that play less kids with recruting the "elite" kids.  However, we have been more willing to play kids 30 plus minutes the last couple of years.  It also allows us to avoid quite as severe of graduation and injury dips as places that only play 7-8 kids because the subs have real experience.

Injuries has been the biggest issue on smaller rosters, and then Sam's class was just bizzare stuff.  One left to return home for boyfriend and one left to play NAIA and volleyball for her hs coach who took an NAIA job even though she was a starter and played a ton.

Womens bball is harder to keep players happy then mens. Boys have always had a crowded fish bowl and they grow late in hs often so they always have to claw their way up.  Girls (and worse girls parents) don't handle not playing much well because they were all full grown by 9th grade and fishbowl is small.  There are very few late bloomers.  Most college girls bball players started 4 years of hs or at least 3 and most were all state at least 3.    Plus with mens practice squads kids 10-15 often don't even get many reps in practice.  At least boys 10-15 on a mens team get full intensity practice all the time.

Some womens teams will only take 12-13 on their roster just because of moral issues for the reasons stated above.  However, big football schools usually have 15.  I believe they get more pressure to have a full roster form AD dept. because of title 9 issues.  Mid majors with d1aa football or no football tend to have smaller rosters on avergage.

Just my two cents.

I see depth in WBB as a plus. (Provided you can get all players on the same page and to “buy in”)  If Coach Amy’s teams are 10-12 deep with everyone getting meaningful minutes/valuable experience, then during games against teams that are only 6-7 deep, Amy can throw wave after wave of fresh, experienced players at the those teams and theoretically run them out of the arena so that they are exhausted by the 4th quarter. And if the opposing teams are exhausted, their shooting percentages will decline, their passing will become sloppy causing turnovers and they’ll be more likely to foul while trying to play defense.  Again, in theory.  But lots of things look good “in theory” 😉

We are only two scholarships short, but are long on absences.  Right now Miss Haiby, Miss Dillard, Miss Bourne, Miss Brady and Miss Mendelsen are unavailable.  I haven't seen enough of three of them to have an idea about what we are missing, but with Sam and Issie I know a quick return is definitely desired.  They have intangibles we need and need back soon.

Hard to play with all-out effort, without plenty of bodies.  Our defensive effort has been a topic of discussion this year.  Does our short roster have anything to do with that?

IMO, give out all 15 scholarships, even if several are one year eligible transfer portal players.  If the player is looking for less competition, is she the right fit?  Bella played plenty of minutes, and she still left.  It is a different time.

So how soon does Mendelson see the court now that VB is done? Would be nice to have her for the Wyoming game.

Probably the Wyoming game as you mentioned.  One week off after the Samford game and finals week with some practice and she should be hungry to get the bad taste of the extremely close loss to Oregon in VB out of her system.  The rest of the VB returning players have to wait until next VB season.

Your best players have to play the most minutes. Jaz is playing over 35 minutes/game and Bourne and Markowski need to play big minutes. Even with and if everyone is healthy I want Jaz and Bourne on the floor.

I have always read that Mandelson would be taking 2-3 weeks between volleyball and basketball.  So sometime between Christmas and New Years.  She has been going hard since mid August.  Bodies need some downtime.

I will wager that she is on the bench tonight.  That said, to me the questions are whether she suits up and if she suits up, could she see a few minutes on the floor?

Sure, expect Mendelson as a spectator...and for a while.  Maybe play a few min. tonight?  Probably not, but she's an exceptional athlete.

Best case for us ... probably will be watching for a couple or more games. Maybe play like said...Wyoming or Kansas ?  Then because she can get her feet wet, before B1G games.

But reality says she may want more down time, before another 3-4 or so months, of the rigors of constant games, practice, travel, etc etc.  And may want some time to adjust to a different sport.   Volleyball and BBall technical skills are very different.

Ultimately it's up to her.   But I can't wait to see her go at it.

Ahhh.  But she is competitive, I am guessing that if you leave it strictly up to her, she will play.  If academia, coaches, parents, nutritional staff and trainers have a say, it will then be a couple weeks. 😉

Yep agree. Can we talk her into it somehow?

On the bench tonight.  After week of practice play in the Wyoming game.  And then when we really need her the Kansas game. Kansas is doing very well and have a great and tall center.  The plan last summer was for her to take a week off between sports.  But she didn't play in games down the stretch plus with games close together at the end VB practices had to be limited a bit as well.  Just remember all the VB players have a bitter taste after losing to Oregon.  She can get rid of hers by contributing in WBB.  Also she jockeyed very successfully between two sports when playing last summer.
