Nebraska 80, Michigan State 74

Nebraska, you’ve won me back.

The Cornhuskers earned a massive road win to open up Big Ten play, taking down NET Rankings darling Michigan State with a big win that could have been more lopsided than the final score represents.

It was a close game for much of the contest, with Nebraska taking a 43-39 halftime lead, but, after an even third, the Cornhuskers began to pull away at the start of the fourth quarter. The lead ballooned to 17 and stayed around there for awhile, with Nebraska up 77-60 with 2:17 to play.

To Michigan State’s credit, they kept battling and got the deficit all the way down to 4 late, but it was the Cornhuskers who ultimately held on. Maybe most impressively, Nebraska did this without a massive scoring effort from star Jaz Shelley, who finished with 11 points on 2-of-10 shooting. Shelley also had 7 rebounds and 9 assists because she is Jaz Shelley, but Nebraska needed other scoring threats and found them.

Alexis Markowski (13 points) and a pair of freshmen: Jessica Petrie (11 points) and Natalie Potts (10), also finished in double figures, while three others also finished with at least 8 points. Markowski was also huge on the glass, hauling in 17 rebounds and adding 3 steals. She has been great to start this season, making that leap that seemed evident after her stellar freshman campaign in 2021-22.

Michigan State has lost some key depth pieces to injury already this season, so to see the Spartans showing this much fight is promising. Moira Joiner (18 points) and Theryn Hallock (17) had 35 of the team’s points in the contest, as both led a dominant interior scoring game for the Spartans. Michigan State shot 57.5 percent inside the arc, but hit only 4 of its 27 threes.

Yeah, and we haven't???

We haven't been given a lot of love lately.  Like when we play really good it's a surprise.  Mich. St. and Illinois both were overrated last year and continue to be this year. Both made the NCAA "bunny bracket as last four in" and lost first game.  I love it when we significantly beat them at their places as we did each of the last time we played them.

I mentioned earlier that I went to a womens college game. And low and behold Amy Stephens was a ref. I thought it looked like her, but I was sure. So I get and check the box score and there she is.

Officials: Dean Reidel, Aaron Dueker, Amy Stephens

Watched the Creighton-UConn game this morning on YouTube. (1-4-24)

UConn blasted the jays by about 40+ last night on Creighton's floor. Just ran them into the ground. Creighton had about a record crowd, but were silenced by end of 1st half.  It was women against the girls. UConn really exposed Creighton's weaknesses. (If that's a word), in about every way possible.

Paige is back, full speed. She shot I think it was 60% and can shoot any shot. Very complete player. Really makes UConn go.

UConn's defense was an exhibition in how it's done. Their offense is fun to watch. Everyone could do about anything needed. Excellent ball handling, passing, and movement on the floor.

So if your not a Creighton fan, you can enjoy that one.

But the big new is UConn's loss of Aubrey Griffin to knee injury. May be full season loss.

Wowzers!!! image.gif  (Isn't that what Connie Yori had to do when she first took over the WBB Program?  Go to the Dorms & Sororities to solicit players?  😬)

TCU's Roster shows 14 players. Less Grad Student Jaden Owens out for the season with Knee injury, and Sedona Prince who has been out since suffering a broken finger Jan 3rd.

By contrast Huskers have 12 players on their roster, including Allison Weidner who is out for the season.

That’s nuts!  They’re holding open tryouts for the remainder of the season today or tomorrow!

Yes it is, to go from a roster of 14 to holding tryouts to fill out a roster. Goes to show you just how fragile a roster can be.

Anyone watch Penn St last night? They looked pretty dang good with the whole group together now. Owusu is fun to watch. I will be curious to see who guards her for us.

I watched. She is fun. I was wondering that as well. Maybe KM?
