Norm's Prediction for Next Year's Top 8, complete with Norm names:

Big Dog Shepard

Alpha Romeo

Alley Cat Havers

Princess Jasmine Cincore

Captain Jack Blackburn

Sweet Madeline Simon

The Irish Assassin, Katie Doyle

Kiss Me Cayton (I DARE Matt Coatney to adopt this moniker for her, but it fits with Kent "I Love You Shavon" Pavelka)

I struggled with the idea of having two true freshmen in next year's top 8, BUT ...

I can't see putting a walk-on in there.

I can't see Esther making the jump.

We've kinda talked about Darrien.

I would be surprised if the coaches can keep the Irish Assassin off the floor.

I kinda flipped a coin between Cayton and Whitish.  I think arguments could be made for either.

anyone else possibly see a redshirt coming out of next year's class? of course, they would have to agree. plus---------depends on, you know, those really bad unmentionables.....i don't even want to mention it!

think norm is pretty spot on......although, see one that could be questionable.

As I previously noted I see one possibly two redshirts from the freshmen coming in.  It depends a lot on the development of Simon and Cincore.  Of course the main factor in all this is our sad injury situation.  Will it be ongoing on could we see improvement.  Hopefully they will reevaluate the practice scenario as that seems to be where we have a lot of the injury's.

I suspect it is not just the practice scenario, but also issues with the rehabilitation process once they are injured.  I am still astonished that Shepard entered school early in the summer so that she had access to the trainers and S&C and in the fall when she was evaluated by the athletic performance lab, she was behind in her recovery.  How does that happen?  And it doesn't fall on Jess, she works hard.  I'm telling you, there is a major issue with the trainers and S&C.  And probably not just with the women's basketball team.

But it's the women's Bball that seems to be the one that suffers...maybe the most. Something isn't right that we have so many on the injury list ...seemingly continuously.  It's been all year long, and much of last year too.  Can it just be bad karma ?

While I'm a huge proponent of red shirting, it just doesn't seem to be Connie's way of doing things very much.

So some just sit the bench. That's the prevalent thinking in the BIG in general. Don't develop the  roster. I'd rather have a roster full all the time, and use all of them as much as possible. Like the South Dakota teams do.

But that's fantasy I guess.

I think if Coach Yori has mentioned that the season is long, then she should make sure she subs more.  And that can only be done if people aren't injured.  So look at practices, S&C, athletic trainers, and use the athletic performance lab to identify issues with individual athletes.  There really should be no reason that a sophomore (one that is not injured and not in the doghouse for some reason) shouldn't be able to give some meaningful minutes off the bench.

Agree...and that's how they all get game ready. Sure, you don't have to play them all 30 min. each, but start slow, and consistently give them some time. By the last half of the season.....hopefully it would be of benefit to the  team.

Other wise... why are you recruiting players...that don't play ? Recruit players, red shirt those not ready for league play, but later, get them floor time.

Real complicated issue.  Looks like the South Dakota's of the world, have no big stars really, and make up for it by using a full bench to outrun, and wear out other teams. That being said, they don't play a B1G, or Big 12 schedule, and can use lots of subs and still keep up.

As is said...I guess if it was that easy ...anyone could do it.

Here is the roster and the injuries.  Other than the bad luck with pre-existing injuries it just isn't as critical as all you the sky is falling people are making it seem.  So what do all you trainers think should have been done differently to avoid these injuries.

Rachel Blackburn F 6-3 1 Fr. - pre-existing knee injury

Jasmine Cincore G 5-10 3 So. - no injury

 Kyndal Clark G 5-7 7 Sr. - pre-existing knee injuries

Allie Havers C 6-5 5 Jr. - no injury

Anya Kalenta F 6-3 7 Sr. - supposedly foot but moved normal in WNIT

Alicia Ostrander F 6-3 7 Sr. - blew out knee first practice after long volleyball season

Esther Ramacieri G 5-8 5 Jr. - missed time but don't know what for

Natalie Romeo G 5-7 3 So. - no injury

Jessica Shepard F 6-4 1 Fr. - stress reaction probably caused by weight she carried all year

Maddie Simon G 6-2 1 Fr. - simple sprained ankle and injury outside of basketball

Rachel Theriot G 6-0 7 Sr. - pre-existing foot injury

Darrien Washington F 6-2 2 RFr. - no injury

Emily Wood G 5-5 3 So. - no injury

Refresh my memory - I could swear Cinco was out for a while early in the season due to injury.  Maybe it was illness?  And I heard that Esther was out due to concussion.  Last year was boot-gate.

I suppose part of what we are seeing is the loss of some recruits (Chandler and the Page sisters mostly).  Tvrdy came off the bench and played some solid minutes for CSU this season.

I think it is crucial when a player has an injury or comes in with an injury that there is constant communication among the trainers and S&C and the coaches.  They all need to work together to ensure that the player is recovering and not taking steps backwards in the recovery process.  The left hand needs to know what the right hand is doing at all times.

Cincore had a stress reaction and missed a month of practice.  Returned in time for season opener.

Ramacieri:  Of course we know what she missed time for--Injured knee kept her out of summer ball.  Missed time for a concussion which occurred outside of basketball.  Then missed time for a strained achilles and unspecified illness.

Ostrander:   Had a torn Achilles rather than a blown out knee.

It seems from the past couple of years the only consistent and perhaps alarming situation is the number of stress reactions.  That was better in '15-16 fortunately, although it would have been hard to to have been worse than '14-'15.  FWIW, there isn't any correlation in the medical studies as to weight, despite FB shooting from the hip on that.

Although this thread is about stress reactions, here is what I found on stress fractures. some causes are interesting.

Not quite accurate. It's possible that, at all other schools -

Including Nebraska five years ago - Jess comes back. The lab looks at the issue deeper than most schools would.

Looks like this list is going to need some serious revision.

Can Maddie Simon play PG?

Havers can play Center, of course.

Then you could have Blackburn at PF.

Shepard might be your wing/small forward.

Ramacieri as the 2-guard?

Simon playing point?

That would be a lineup with some serious size.  Maybe the tallest starting lineup on the conference, or close to it.

If Natalie does transfer I see Hannah Whitish as the two guard.  We absolutely need to keep Kathleen Doyle for a point guard.

......Clayton ? Will she hold to her commit?

Posted

That's the $64,000 question.  She is the fastest of all the recruits and plays for one of the top teams in the nation.  I would see her playing the  2 guard as well as she is a good shot and has an excellent drive to the hoop.  Could play some point guard.  I hope her and Doyle both stay.
