No. 12 Huskers Look to Rebound in Annual Battle with Bluejays

The No. 12 Nebraska women’s basketball team returns to road action Thursday when the Huskers head to Omaha for their annual clash with Creighton.

Tip-off between the Huskers and Bluejays in the 40th meeting between the two teams is set for 8 p.m. at D.J. Sokol Arena.

Nebraska and Creighton have played each other in women’s basketball every season since 1983-84 campaign, including two-game season series in 1985-86 and 1986-87. Nebraska owns a 28-11 lead in the all-time series. Since the series became continuous, Nebraska owns a 23-10 lead.

Nebraska will try to bounce back from its first loss of the season, a 53-51 setback to Alabama. Creighton heads into Thursday’s game with a 4-4 record after rallying from a 16-point halftime deficit to win 58-56 at Northern Iowa Monday. Nebraska will be the third top-15 foe on Creighton’s schedule so far this season, joining road losses at UConn and California.

Creighton enters the game averaging 66.5 points, despite shooting just 39 percent from the field. CU has had tremendous success from long range with 68 of its 189 field goals on the year coming from beyond the arc. Opponents are shooting 47.1 percent against the Jays, including 42.5 percent from three.

The Jays have held their own (-1.6 rpg) on the glass despite games against UConn, Cal, Utah, Wichita State, South Dakota State, Cincinnati and Seton Hall. CU outrebounded UNI, 42-36. Creighton has averaged just 12.4 turnovers per game.

Tear’a Laudermill led the Big Red with 25 points on a school-record-tying seven three-pointers in a losing effort against Alabama.

    Probable Starters:

    Nebraska Cornhuskers

    3 - Hailie Sample - 6-1 - Sr. - F - 6.9 ppg

    23 - Emily Cady - 6-2 - Sr. - F - 13.4

    1 - Tear’a Laudermill - 5-9 - Sr. - G

    13 - Brandi Jeffery - 5-7 - Sr. - G - 9.5

    33 - Rachel Theriot - 6-0 - Jr. - G - 17.9

    Creighton Bluejays

    11 - Bailey Norby - 6-2 - Fr. - F - 2.4 ppg

    23 - Marissa Janning - 6-2 - Jr. - F - 16.4

    45 - Alexis Akin-Otiko - 6-0 - So. - F - 10.8

    3 - MC McGrory - 5-8 - So. - G - 8.3

    14 - Sydney Lamberty - 5-10 - Fr. - G - 7.1

Nebraska Coach Connie Yori has been a part of all but eight of the previous 39 meetings between Nebraska and Creighton.

Rachel Theriot has produced double figures in seven on NU’s first eight games this season.

Emily Cady owns 1,161 points, 855 rebounds, 242 assists and 118 steals. She is just the third player in Nebraska history with 1,000 points, 800 rebounds, 200 assists and 100 career steals, joining Maurtice Ivy and Anna DeForge.

Nebraska remained No. 12 in The Associated Press Poll, while holding at No. 15 in the USA Today Coaches Top 25 after four weeks of regular-season play.

If I was to just have tuned in and hadn't watched this game and only listened to these announcers I would think we are down by 15 or so.

FS1 is Big East right, because they couldn't 't be more pro Creighton if they had girls playing for them.

45-32 Big Red, and there are 8 minutes left.  Emily just collected her third foul.

    Clank!

    Swoosh!  45-33.

Owens fouls Emily seven seconds into the shot clock.

Triple threat position leads to a Havers layup... and a CU timeout!  47-33.

Bad thing is Eric Collins is a Big Ten guy. He does all of the Big 10 women's tournament.

I think FS1 is Big East, indeed.  (It is also Big 12).

FS1 doesn't appear on my TV here in Chicago, so I get to follow along with the best PxP-and-color team in the nation: Matt and Jeff!

Thought his voice sounded like I heard it before.

I think I heard at least one big complaint.

It's 51-40, with 5:25 to go.  But this one is not over by a long shot...

...because CU hits a three! 51-43.

Theriot nails a triple to push the lead back to 4 possessions: 53-43.

And Creighton hits a three again!  A missed Nebraska three on the quick play... and Huskers avoided another Creighton three.

T at the line for 2: makes the first (54-46) and makes the second (55-46). 4 minutes left.

You forgot the two bunny hops that weren't called.

Less than 2 minutes left.  Brandi commits a foul after going for a rebound from a missed CU three.

Alexis A. hits a three-- Huskers only lead by 4 now!

And after a turnover, Sample takes a charge!

Timeout Huskers: 1:16 left.  BIG rebound on offense by the Huskers!  GO BIG RED is resounding through Sokol!

Missed shot... 41 seconds left and Creighton has the ball.  And Alexis cuts our lead to 57-55.  WOW.

Hailie is at the stripe again, with another one-and-one.

    GOOD! 60-57.

    Miss.  60-57.

And the desperation three at the buzzer is off the rim!  Huskers beat Creighton 60-57... with the same score that they won by in 2006!

Havers really step it up tonight. Hailie won the game for us with her free throws. Emily had another double double. Brandi lead the team in rebounds. We are going to need more than eight players suited up if we are going to be successful in Big 10 play.

Romeo is close to being ready according to Matt and Jeff.
