I don't post on here much, but thought this was the best avenue to share a problem I see with a few members of the RedZone.

I sit behind the Husker bench and have noticed a few of the members of the RedZone take the newspaper tradition a little too far. A few of the members seem to make every effort to throw the paper out on the floor. It started happening with some of the bigger B1G games last year and happened again last night. One student even wadded up paper and threw the ball in front of the Nebraska bench. The official had to pick it up during Creighton's possession.

We need to continue to make the game an enjoyable event for students, but not take it to a point where our students become part of the action on the floor.

Now that I have this off my chest...I hope the RedZone continues to bring it every night! Some of my fondest memories from UNL was being part of the RedZone.

This has been a problem for a while and we've managed to police it pretty well on the east side by the opposing teams bench. Looks like we need to place someone over there to start policing it a little better.

I think the first problem is that a basketball student section is called the "Red Zone".

I think so too. If they were truly concerned about shedding the "just a football school" stereotype, changing the student section's name would be a great place to start.

Either Johnny Orr, Norm Stewart or Billy Tubbs made reference to our student section something to the effect of being as loud as a bunch of dead dogs. Danny Nee tried to turn it into a positive and call the student section "dead dog alley" and there were some cheers the students were supposed to cheer in the event of certain things happening -- like barking like a dog every time an opponent missed a free throw or something. For some strange reason, it never caught on.

Lots of great student sections in the B1G.

Izzone

Nut House

Barnyard

Orange Krush

Paint Crew

Perhaps the most organized student section in the B1G would be Michigan's Maize Rage, which appears to be what we are modeling the student section in PBA after. They even have a web page with instructions on chants, apparel, etc. http://www.umich.edu/~bballfan/

Interesting tidbits there:

The Rage Page

The "Rage Page", formerly known as the "Full Court Press" is a game-day scouting report prepared before each home game. Written by hand-picked members of the Maize Rage "Core", it is distributed to the Maize Rage student section prior to games and contains information on the opposing team as well as the Michigan team.

Requirements For Sitting in Bleachers

Students with a ticket in the bleachers are required to wear a maize Michigan shirt (preferably basketball related), a Michigan basketball jersey, or a costume. Students who do not comply with this requirement may be moved to the blue or gold sections. It is also required that students in the bleachers stand up during game action. It looks bad on television when some of the students are sitting down.

Now, I'll be the first to say that may be slight overkill, Red Zone's got a twitter feed, and they stand, etc., which is pretty good...

But I still wish they could come up with a better name. :)

Scarlet Fever?

The Red Zone doesn't seem terrible to me. Although there is a red zone in football, the student section is just a zone that is red with no relation to football and I've never really thought of it relating to football. Maybe Old Spice at one time or another though.

New arena next year maybe time to come up with some new things.

Also I have always thought that Nebraska tends to go move towards an older crowd in all their sports.

How many students can get into volleyball? What is the % for students vs all the 86,000?

Just never to seem to have the HUGH student sections that other schools do. Don't know if is because the students don't show up or if the school doesn't give enough tickets out compared to the paying public.

Think a lot of it has to do with the fact the older people tend to have deeper pockets than the youngins.
