jimmykc Posted March 10, 2014 Report Posted March 10, 2014 I wonder how many of you were also piqued by Bo's post game sour grapes comments which I'm sure is exactly what he intended. This preys directly upon Nebraskans' natural tendencies to downplay their own worth and denigrate the value of our state ( the main exception to this attitude being our college football program). In the past I have been inclined to feel that we were quite fortunate that the mighty Big Ten deigned to admit us into their prestigious league like a poor black sheep relative who is allowed to sit at the foot of the holiday banquet table. Indeed i was gratified that we could escape the " Texas and a bunch of other schools" league. Yesterday changed this perception permanently. The Big Ten is damn lucky to have us. Not only was the league becoming a bit stodgy and sanctimonious but its' NCAA sports importance was diminishing by the year to more progressive leagues such as the SEC, Pac 10, and yes, even the old Big Twelve. The debacle at Penn State and the poor bowl performances further damaged the league's image. As I watched the ladies hoist their championship trophy and the wildly enthusiastic fans stream across the impressive arena floor I no longer feel we owe the Big Ten any debt of gratitude. We have improved the league's national image in basketball, volleyball, baseball, and football immeasurably. So perhaps coach Ryan is the one who should visit Nebraska a bit more often. He might even win another game here if he coaches for another decade or so. Norm Peterson, Bugeaters1, 49r and 3 others 6 Quote
Norm Peterson Posted March 10, 2014 Report Posted March 10, 2014 Jimmy, I didn't catch Ryan's comments. What were they? Where were they? Quote
Nighthawk Posted March 10, 2014 Report Posted March 10, 2014 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XcTMtCSbJlg I guess it's just me...but so what...I guess some of the comments that he made could be taken out of context if you don't hear the whole conversation. I know we have had a lot of positive feedback from players and coaches of opposing teams. It wasn't a big deal to him...not sure it has to be. I guess I'll just put him with the group of people in Lincoln that were against the arena being built. Quote
nuled2dance Posted March 10, 2014 Report Posted March 10, 2014 Yea when you listen to it he is just a frustrated coach after a loss. I liked his response to if we were an NCAA team Quote
Huskerpapa Posted March 10, 2014 Report Posted March 10, 2014 I cannot imagine what I would say if asked some of these same questions after a loss. I really loved his comments about our coach. He certainly doesn't gush praise, but I sensed some respect. Quote

Huskerinct Posted March 10, 2014 Report Posted March 10, 2014 Geez read the husker.com post game quotes. Ryan says something along lines that He and Miles could be brothers in another life Quote
hhcmatt Posted March 10, 2014 Report Posted March 10, 2014 Wisconsin's Head Coach Bo Ryan On keeping Nebraska out of the lane :“Well, we took the lane away a lot in the second half, unless I'm reading these (stats) wrong and unless I need to get $2 glasses. We made an improvement in second half points, in the paint and fourteen of those free-throws came at the end when we were fouling to try and get on the lefthand side." On Wisconsin's missed free-throws :“Yeah, we missed a few in there." On the crowd's influence :“We were at Virginia when they had maybe 18 thousand, and we've played at Ohio State. These guys have all played in pretty big places. This is the Big Ten. Have you ever been to the other places? Or do they just keep you here? Do you get to travel? Some people do local TV and don't go to the other Big Ten games." On the new environment :“It's not new to us. You'd have to live the lives these guys live, going into the places we go into." On Wisconsin's 40-32 second-half lead :"Well, we hit some shots and they regrouped and shut down some things. Then they hit some shots. Playing from behind, we had a couple chances there. We were biting into their lead and we missed a few free-throws, as you said. The guys kept playing hard, though." On defending Shavon Shields:“Well, you can simulate what some guys do in practice, but we had a couple guys who just didn't shut some things down on the angles. Once it gets started, a guy feels he can do anything. It's like some of our guys. If you let them get started, they can make some really good things happen. It's a team defensive thing. But they've done it to other people, so it's not like we're the first team to come in here and not stop certain guys." On the loss affecting Wisconsin's hunt for a number-one seed:“I don't even know what that is. I don't even know what you're talking about. You guys don't know me. The number one seed for what? We're the number two seed in the Big Ten Tournament. That's the only thing I know." On Nebraska being NCAA-Tournament worthy:“Well, sure. That's not even a question in my mind when you play like that in this league. I remember when we were picked last and we tied for the championship. There were still people to the end, until we won our last couple games, like, 'Do you think you'll make the tournament?' We're trying to win the Big Ten. Tim (Miles) was telling me about all the questions you were asking him. All Tim wanted to do was win this 40 minutes. He's like me. Live in the moment. That's how you get to last this long. Tim's young, but he'll last a long time because he's got the right approach. He's got a sense of humor and he's competitive. We could be brothers in another life." On Sam Dekker settling for difficult shots:“You know, I never pick apart a player in a press conference. He's got things to work on like a lot of our other guys. You'd have to ask him." Quote
royalfan Posted March 10, 2014 Report Posted March 10, 2014 He is lying to himself if he thinks he has coached in that environment. He hasn't. Quote
rwmctrofholz Posted March 10, 2014 Report Posted March 10, 2014 He can down play the crowd all he wants, but we don't win that game at a neutral site or in Madison. I wonder if he was brainstorming which university team Miles would be coaching at when Tim beats him next? Quote
huskerpower1988 Posted March 10, 2014 Report Posted March 10, 2014 That was crazy, but at michigan with all those students they have courtsite when both teams are top ten or even at marquette (there version of us playn creighton) also even at ohio st or mich st they have probably played in some similarly tough environments. That being said I don't honestly think he meant any harm with his comments and was almost trying to give some credit to our players and coaches for beating us. Basically if he said the crowd won the game for us it sort of takes away from the players who performed. I could be wrong , but thats just my opinion roscoe 1 Quote
HuskerCager Posted March 10, 2014 Report Posted March 10, 2014 He is lying to himself if he thinks he has coached in that environment. He hasn't. I'm not sure how one could know if Bo had been in this environment before unless they followed him around the last 30 years and attended every game he coached. For my part, I'll give him the benefit of the doubt. Quote
jimmykc Posted March 10, 2014 Author Report Posted March 10, 2014 I agree. My apologies to Bo since what I heard was taken out of context and not meant to imply that our sportswriters only traveled as far as their tractors could carry them. I'm also sure that his team was not in the least affected by our modest sized and somewhat listless crowd and are just crappy free throw shooters. With that said, I'll stick by my main point which is that the mavens of the Big Ten should be congratulating themselves for their foresight since most of our sports programs are in the upper echelon of the league and many of the long time powerhouses have some work to do to catch up. When does Nebraska start getting an equal share of the pie, by the way, because we are doing more than our fair share of drawing national interest. Next time I'll let someone with more diplomacy reply to Coach Ryan, like maybe our own coach Bo. Quote

PAhusker Posted March 11, 2014 Report Posted March 11, 2014 I love Bo. By far my favorite coach in the league behind Tim.That's just him. He didn't really step out of line from what he normally says Quote
